1 Education Services: Maximize the value of your data management investment with E-WorkBook Web E-WorkBook Web (Super User 3 Days) IDBS Education Services provides a range of training options to help customers get up and running with IDBS products quickly and efficiently. Education Services are delivered by dedicated product-expert training consultants. All courses are presented with a standard and consistent methodology, with first class support material supplied.
2 Details E-WorkBook Super User 3 days This course is aimed at new users in different stages of research development who would like an introduction to IDBS E-WorkBook Web, with a view to build, configure and maintain spreadsheets for their organisation. It will provide an introduction to experiment management in E-WorkBook along with saving, generating output and searching within E-WorkBook experiments. The Spreadsheet Builder portion of the course introduces the use of E-WorkBook spreadsheets. Users will explore the key functionality required to create and configure spreadsheets, including searchable data. There are no pre-requisites for this course. The course follows the standard IDBS course delivery method, with delegates using the system as much as possible during the course to complete relevant course workshops. Full support materials, including a Training Reference Guide are supplied to all delegates. Short animated video solutions, with audio are also supplied for all the Workshops. This can be held at IDBS facilities or on your site.
3 Course Objectives At the end of the course delegates will be able to: E-WorkBook Web Super User 3 Days Create, populate and manipulate experiments within E-WorkBook using experiment Templates Save experiments as Versions and Drafts and understand the implications of each save type Edit and work with E-WorkBook Search within E-WorkBook experiments Sign-off experiments and submit experiments to colleagues for review and sign-off using workflows Create experiment templates and Landing Pages for other users Create E-WorkBook and write formulae using a variety of functions Create and configure Table Views and Charts in E-WorkBook Create Perspectives to guide users simply through the workflow and Canvases to provide a dashboard for the Spreadsheet Import data from text files into spreadsheet tables Create and run embedded Spreadsheet searches Understand the Catalog and how Spreadsheet Data is made searchable
4 Overview Day 1 Module Title Module Content E-Workbook Basics Working With experiments Introduction To Searching Sign-Off & Workflows Templates & Landing Pages An introduction to E-WorkBook Creating experiments, populating with data, and options for saving An introduction to the use of E-WorkBook Searching for information in experiments Signing off experiments and Submitting experiments to colleagues for review and sign off using Workflows Creating Templates & Landing Pages that can be used by other users An overview of E-Workbook, comparing it to a paper laboratory notebook; How to log on, and a review of the default E-WorkBook user interface that will be opened; An introduction to the different terms such as Group, Project, Entity, Item etc., that are used in E-WorkBook; How to create new Projects and new experiments within these projects and adding optional attributes for experiments; Creating experiments based on E-WorkBook experiment templates; Following other users and experiments Adding Items to experiments A review of the kind of items that can be added to E-WorkBook, such as Microsoft Word and Excel files and images. Then there is an introduction to the different techniques that can be used to add the items to experiments (Insert item, drag & drop). Manipulating Items in experiments The techniques that can be used to manipulate different item types that have been added to experiments; This includes: adding and editing captions; displaying specific pages from Word documents and pdfs within E-WorkBook; Editing and updating Text items; annotating images; changing the order of items in experiments. Saving experiments A comparison between saving an experiment as a draft, and saving an experiment as a version; the different requirements and consequences for each type of save; Reviewing the history of versions and restoring into E-WorkBook previous experiments versions. A review of the different modes that can be used to open an E-WorkBook Spreadsheet; Working with a Spreadsheet in the Spreadsheet Web Editor; A comparison between spreadsheets that have been built with and without Perspectives; Working with an Instruction sheet. Using the Search View to search for experimental data and content; Running searches in E-WorkBook Adding an electronic signature to experiments to sign them off as the author; An introduction to E-WorkBook Workflows; The tasks that can be configured; The roles of the user assigning the task and the user who has had the task assigned to them; Dealing with assigned tasks Creating standard experiment templates that can be used by other users to create experiments; Using placeholder and preventing deletion of items from the derived experiment; creating Landing Pages to summarise activity on particular projects.

Working In The Spreadsheet Designer Navigating in the Spreadsheet Designer; Understanding Spreadsheet terminology (dimensions and items) Working With Tables Creating spreadsheet tables and views; Getting Started with Spreadsheet & Formulae Creating simple spreadsheet tables and views. Using formulae to populate them Spreadsheet Fundamentals Creating new spreadsheets; Understating the design process; Best practice when building Spreadsheet tables; Effective use of the Data dimension; Linking variables. Introduction to Formulae Writing Differences between cell-specific (Excel Formulae) and general Formulae (BioBook Formulae); Understanding BioBook Formula Syntax; Using the BioBook Formula Editor; Writing simple BioBook Formulae; Using some of the common basic functions in BioBook (AVERAGE, STDEV, MAX etc) Working with Charts An overview of the creation and configuration Table Charts Configuring dynamic chart titles/labels and custom legend labels Table charts are generated directly from Spreadsheet Tables; this unit shows delegates how to control what is displayed in Table Charts; how to customise the colours and patterns of 2D bar and line charts; how to give bar charts a 3D appearance. Constructing Plot Charts from data tables, to provide a numberical x-axis. Using simple BioBook Formulae to create chart titles that will dynamically update; adding dynamic labels to chart axes and referencing values in the legend. Common Functions An introduction to some of the most commonly used function used in BioBook This unit builds on the fundamentals of formula writing which were introduced earlier. Recurrence Keywords (FIRST, LAST etc.); Logical Functions (IF, ISBLANK).
6 Overview Day 3 Module Title Module Content Data Import Using Data-Link to Import Data files An introduction to the use of Data-Link to import data from delimited text files; More Functions Searching & The Catalog An overview of more common functions in Explanation of how data within E-WorkBook is made searchable Using the SELECT and USING AS functions to look up and group data from within a Spreadsheet. Searching Spreadsheet Data Retrieving measures data from the results database; Embedding searches in reports; Parameterised searches for automated reporting; Embedding Searches in ; The Catalog Searching in is governed by the Catalog; This unit explains what the Catalog is, how it works, and why it is of such paramount importance; Delegates will use catalog terms to enter data, and then retrieve that data in searches Perspectives & Canvases An introduction to the use of perspectives, instructions sets and canvases in E-WorkBook Using Perspectives and Instructions Sets to guide users through the workflow and simplify the spreadsheet; creating Canvases as dashboards for, providing a summarised view of the spreadsheet data. Spreadsheet Building Workshops An extended workshop involving serious challenges for delegates Optional (depending upon time remaining) This topic gives delegates an opportunity to utilise the learning of the previous parts of the course in realistic scenarios. Delegates are given mock-requirement documents containing experiment details and data, and are asked to make BioBook spreadsheets to match the scientist s needs..
7 Note The course structure outlined above is the standard core structure of the E-WorkBook Web Super User course. The course content has been designed to allow flexibility, and other extension modules are being regularly developed that can be used to replace modules that you feel are not required for you particular use of E-WorkBook.
