FIND THE STEP & REPEAT Find the Step & Repeat The Step & Repeat functionality has its own tab in the print module s configuration page. To go to the Step & Repeat tab: 1. Open Rolandprintstudio and select your printer. 2. Add your image then click on the page configuration button. 3. Click on the S&R tab to open Step & Repeat. 4. Finally, activate the option by clicking on the Step & Repeat check box. 3

FIND THE STEP & REPEAT By default it opens in Standard mode. 4

STANDARD STEP & REPEAT Standard Step & Repeat Standard Step & Repeat allows the user to do several copies of one image and to optimize their placement on the media depending on the chosen mode and options. Overview Standard Step & Repeat options can be divided into three groups: - Copies placement mode choice: each mode is detailed in the following subchapter. The number of copies is also defined here. - Margins addition. - Copies organization in separated rows. The preview is dynamic and allows to see real time changes made on the page configuration. Margins The Margins tool adds spacing between copies. Spacing is placed between copies on the same line or, when several lines are made, between these lines too. Spacing is defined either in pixels, inches or millimeters depending on the unit chosen for the page configuration tools. See above the three cases: no spacing, positive spacing or negative spacing. 5

STANDARD STEP & REPEAT No spacing, copies are directly placed side by side. Positive spacing; some space is added between copies and between lines. Negative spacing; an overlap appears. The right copy goes above the left one and the bottom one goes above the one on top. Make separate rows This option organizes the copies by rows: in one row, two copies cannot have different orientations. This option makes the cut by paper cutter easier. The make separate row option is not useful in Auto mode when the page format is roll. In this case, copies are automatically organized by rows. The option is not useful when the image orientation mode is fixed. Indeed, only the image automatic orientation option allows copies to have different orientations in order to optimize space on the media. Image automatic orientation option. 6

STANDARD STEP & REPEAT Make separate row is activated. For each line, only one image orientation is allowed. Make separate rows is deactivated. The accent is put on the media usage optimization. Modes Four copies disposition modes exist: - Full - Automatic (Auto) - Manual - Page Full mode This mode puts all copies on the same page and creates only one job with one copy in Rolandprintstudio Spooler. So if the page format is a sheet (A4 for example), the maximal number of copies will depend on: - The image size (and the maximal number of copies that can be placed on the sheet with that size) 7

STANDARD STEP & REPEAT - The images orientation - The make separate rows option - The margins This number cannot go over and will automatically be replaced by the maximum if the user enters a higher number in the Copies filed. Globally in full mode, the number of copies is restricted to Auto mode On this example the page format is A4 and the maximal number of copies is 6. This mode combines the multipage and the image placement optimization on the media. When a page is full, if more copies are required, the full page is duplicated. The number of copies doubles then while no intermediate number can be chosen. In roll mode, a page corresponds to only one row. So even in roll mode a maximal copy number per page exists. Each page is an iteration of the job. In our example, we have 12 copies on 2 pages so, in the Spooler, we will have 1 job with 2 copies (iterations) and each copy will contain 6 images. 8

STANDARD STEP & REPEAT Presentation in sheet (A4) and roll format. Manual mode In manual mode, the user specifies the number of copies per pages and the number of pages. The user is then able to place all copies on the same page or use the multipage option. Each page is a duplicate of the first one and the total copy number (S&R * Pages) is clearly displayed. In the Rolandprintstudio Spooler each page will be considered as one copy of the job so in our example, we will have 2 copies of the job with 10 images per copy. 9

STANDARD STEP & REPEAT Page mode This modes allows you to, according to the media type: - A sheet: fill the sheet with the maximum number of repeats (looks like the full mode without the ability to choose the number of copies and to duplicate the sheet) - A roll: specify a height to get a page size and then fill this page with the maximum number of repeats. You can only create one page: 1 job with 1 copy. 10

CONTOUR NESTING Contour Nesting This new functionality allows you to nest your images while taking into account the real contour of the element. Then, it can be placed optimally to save media. Closely linked to the cut, when Contour is activated, the cut is also automatically activated. Overview The Step&Repeat Contour options can be divided into three groups: - Copies placement mode choice: each mode is detailed in the following subchapter. The number of copies is also defined here. - Margins addition and bleed area - Contour management - The preview is dynamic and allows to see real time changes made on the page configuration. Margins The Margins tool adds spacing between copies. Spacing is placed between copies from contour to contour. Spacing is defined either in pixels, inches or millimeters depending on the unit chosen for the page configuration tools. See above the two cases: no spacing and positive spacing. Negative spacing is not allowed. 11

CONTOUR NESTING No spacing, copies are directly placed side by side. Positive spacing (20mm); some space is added between copies from contour to contour. The Bleed The Bleed option adds bleed area to the image. It can be necessary to avoid cutting irregularities being visible. Indeed, Contour Nesting deletes the image background by default to nest the images with their real contours. So, if the cut goes over the contour, the media will be visible. Adding part of the background or masking the media with bleed solves the problem. Three methods exist to create the bleed area with Contour Nesting: - Use of the background: we use the image background to fill the expected thickness. If there is no background, no pixel will be added to the print. - Pixel duplication from the contour border: the color of the pixel right next to the contour is used to fill the additional pixels. - Pixel duplication in mirror: Symmetry is done using the contour as the axis of symmetry and to fill the additional pixels. So if we have a gradient just next to the contour, there will be no abrupt break between the inside and the outside of the picture. Bleed is defined either in pixels, inches or millimeters, depending on the unit chosen in the page configuration tools. Please note that the margin is automatically bounded from below two times the bleed value. The margin is indeed fixed according to the contour and not to the printed area. So if there is 10mm Bleed, the margin will automatically be changed to 20mm (10mm per image). You can see above two examples: one with and one without bleed. The background used for these examples is intentionally flashy to be more visible. In a normal use, you will probably see elements of the image or some more appropriate background. Be careful, is the image has no background; Rolandprintstudio will not create one for it. 12

CONTOUR NESTING Original image No Bleed, the background does not appear and copies are placed alongside Positive Bleed (10mm), the background appears. Reminder: if the image has no background, the images will be moved aside but no printing area will be added. Modes Three copies disposition modes exist: Full,Manual and Page. Full mode This mode puts all copies on the same page and creates only one job with one copy in Rolandprintstudio Spooler. So if the page format is a sheet, the maximal number of copies will depend on: - The image size (and the maximal number of copies that can be placed on the sheet with that size) - The images orientation 13

CONTOUR NESTING - The margins This number cannot go over and will automatically be replaced by the maximum if the user enters a higher number in the Copies filed. Globally in full mode, the number of copies is restricted to Manual mode In manual mode, the user specifies the number of copies par pages and the number of pages. The user is then able to place all copies on the same page or to use the multipage option. Each page is a duplicate of the first one and the total copy number (S&R * Pages) is clearly displayed. In the Rolandprintstudio Spooler each page will be considered as one copy of the job so in our example, we will have 4 copies of the job with 7 images per copy so 28 copies in all. 14

CONTOUR NESTING Page mode This modes allows you to, according to the media type: - A sheet: fill the sheet with the maximum number of repeats (looks like the full mode without the ability to choose the number of copies and to duplicate the sheet) - A roll: specify a height to get a page size and then fill this page with the maximum number of repeats. You can only create one page: 1 job with 1 copy. 15

CONTOUR NESTING Contours This area is a copy of the contours of the cut tab. It allows you to define the printing and cuttings options of each contour. Every change done here is automatically reported in the original one in the cut tab and vice versa. Please note that only contours that are activated for the cut are taken into account by Contour Nesting. For further information please refer to the Cutting manual that details the elements. 16

LAUNCH THE PRINT Launch the print If your printing configuration is ready, you can start the print right away: Click on Print at the bottom of the window Close the Page setup and click the Print button. 17

USE OF STEP&REPEAT NESTING Use of Step&Repeat Nesting This new function allows you to nest as a block repetitions of the same image made by Step&Repeat. Then, the blocks are nested together but their images will not be mixed. Example of blocks made with Step&Repeat Standard and nested with Nest-O-Matik. You can use images nested together as blocks or as individuals. It will not create several Autonests as long as you keep the same print parameters. How to use Step&Repeat Nesting The use of this new functionality is very simple. 1. Open your Print module and add your first image. Select the Nest action. 18

USE OF STEP&REPEAT NESTING 2. Open the Page Setup and go to the S&R tab. 3. Select the type of Step&Repeat you want to use: Standard or Contour. 4. You can see the new option at the top right of the window. It is called: Nest as block. Activate Nest as block. You can see that your repetitions are now visible on the preview. The standard way to use Nest-O-Matik shows you only one repetition of your image on this preview; it adds and nests all the copies of the image in the Spooler. 19

USE OF STEP&REPEAT NESTING 1. Set your Step&Repeat and all your print parameters accordingly. 2. When you are ready, you can click Print. Your block of images will then be send to the Spooler and put into an Autonest task. 5. You can then drag and drop your next image directly into the Page Setup and start over at step 3. 20

USE OF STEP&REPEAT NESTING 6. When you have nested every block of images and the images you wanted to print, you can start the printing directly within the Spooler. Your print can also start automatically when the conditions you defined in the Nest-O-Matik settings are reached (maximal size for example). 21
