1 How to Locate Information in the Area of Industrial Safety Classroom Outline Class: IS 2710 Principles of Industrial Safety 1a & 1b Date & Time: Section 1a, Wednesday, January 31 at 11:00 a.m. Section 1b, Friday, February 2 at 11:00 a.m. Location: Karrmann Library, B-6 Professor: Bouck Librarian: Bryan Schwark, Division Librarian for Industrial Studies Welcome to this Workshop Session! Purpose of this session:! To provide an awareness of the Library s World Wide Web Home Page.! To describe some of the resources and services of the Library that will assist you in locating materials associated with your assignments in the broad field of Industrial and Occupational Safety and Health.! To introduce the Librarian for Industrial Studies General Information: Locating information may done in a variety of ways, one of which is to search an index or catalog to find: 1) citation [basic information needed to find a particular book, journal article, video, etc. available on a certain topic or subject] major way to locate information. Items not available locally often may be obtained on Interlibrary Loan from another library 2) the full-text information [a limited amount of material is available this way] This session will include access to citations to information, or the information itself, whether found: 1) in the library, 2) online through library subscribed databases, and/or 3) available through: Netscape Navigator or Library Home Page Locating Information: Start with the Library Home Page

2 A. Electronic Resources - - Select Electronic Resources 1. Academic Search (EbscoHost) (General magazine and journal database for citations to information and/or the information itself full-text, many items will be in the Library or the Library can obtain them through Interlibrary Loan. Click LOGIN to EBSCOhost and EBSCOhost a. Keyword Search is the default. Type in the Find box ppe which has over 100 entries. b. Click Refine Search and retry the search, however eliminate Preparticipation and property as follows ppe NOT (preparticipation OR property). 2. Applied Science & Technology Full Text (Specialized database similar to above with less full-text material, but more information in science and technology, items not available locally can be obtained through ILL.) a. Check Applied Science & Technology Full Text, General Science Full Text, and Wilson Business Full Text, and click Search in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. b. Check Words Anywhere and click in Type a word or phrase box and type safety AND standards AND occupational and click Search Now. 3. WISCAT (Wisconsin Catalog) (A catalog used to find items not in our Library, but available from other Wisconsin Libraries.) B. Selected Internet Sites 1. NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) NIOSH, the Federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for prevention of work-related disease and injury. Safety and health at work for all people through research and prevention. The Institute is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). a. Look at the Topic Index. b. Select Chemical Safety / MSDSs. c. Select NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards. d. Note this is full text. Click on HTML version. e. Select INDEX with CHEMICAL NAMES and SYNONYMS and choose Acetal and look at entry.

OSHA ( Occupational Safety and Health Administration) The mission of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is to save lives, prevent injuries and protect the health of America's workers. To accomplish this, federal and state governments must work in partnership with the more than 100 million working men and women and their six and a half million employers who are covered by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of ASSE (American Society of Safety Engineers) ASSE is the world's oldest and largest professional safety organization. Members manage, supervise and consult on safety, health and environmental issues in industry, insurance, government and education. 4. Internet-Try Northern Light (Search Engine) C. Electronic Resources From the Library Home Page, 1) click on Journal Indexes, Full-Text and more..., 2) click on Academic Search Elite (EBSCOhost), 3) select Academic Search Elite, 4) Click Enter. 1. Academic Search (EbscoHost) a. Keyword Search.. Type in the Find box ppe which has over 100 entries. b. Note ppe abbreviation for Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (PPE) as well as personal protective equipment (PPE), property, plant, and equipment (PPE).

Click Refine Search and retry the search, however eliminate Preparticipation and property as follows ppe NOT (preparticipation OR property). d. There are still over 90 entries and we have not eliminated abbreviations like Poisoned Partner Effect (PPE), photopyroelectric (PPE) detection. e. Select Effective Training: COVERING THE BASES.

Note the author of the article, the title of the article, the title of the journal, and the volume, issue, date, and page of the reference basic citation to find information for a journal article. g. This title is held by Karrmann Library. Check for holdings. h. Note the hotlinked Subject(s):PROTECTIVE clothing industry ; EMPLOYEES Training of ; and INDUSTRIAL Safety which has over 600 entries, and even when limited to Full Text there are over 150 entries. i. Entries can be printed, ed, or downloaded to disk, etc.
