24 JandsPtyLtd40KentRoadMascotNSW2020AustrPhon Fa wwjandscomauVista Linux Consoles Tech Bulletin #TBJLT181 Technical Bulletin Date: 6 th November 2015 Author: Susan Twartz Distribution: General Public Common Issues Experienced by Users When Creating and Updating Consoles via Bootable USB When updating Linux consoles using a bootable USB, some users experience problems. This technote lists a number of solutions that resolve the most common issues. The console does not successfully complete the update 1. The USB drive is too small and needs to be clear of any other data. It needs to be a minimum of 4GB. 2. During the download process, the computer has decompressed the.img file. Check the file properties on our website against what has been downloaded to make sure they are the same. If they are not, check the file association actions in the program being used to download. For example on a PC you may have to set the file associations on both Internet Explorer and WinRAR to do nothing but download.img files. If you are downloading with Safari on a Mac and the download has the wrong name or filesize you may need to turn off Safari's 'Open safe files after downloading' option. To do this: On the Safari menu select the Preferences option. On the General tab of the Preferences window uncheck the 'Open safe files after downloading' box. Do not use Google Chrome to download these files. Chrome is written to automatically decompress these file types and the settings cannot be overridden by the user. 3. The date and time on the console is incorrect and is set to a date and time prior to when the software was compiled. Change the date and time to the current time. The console does not update even though the bootable USB was selected in the BIOS The USB drive has an illegal character in it's name. These include spaces, /* etc. It's often the case that you will see it to set the boot priority in the BIOS but then Linux will not see it to boot from it. The simple work around is to rename the USB. e2x2alianote: While all due care and attention has been taken in the preparation of this document, Jands Pty Ltd shall not be liable for any inaccuracies or omissions which may

Introduction In some Windows installations, the UD 512 USB to DMX device is incorrectly assigned a generic Windows driver causing it to not be recognised by the Vista application. This procedure updates the firmware on the UD 512 so that it will always use Jands supplied drivers. Once the firmware is updated, the UD512 cannot be used in earlier versions of Vista. Procedure 1. Disconnect the UD512 from the host PC. 2. Install the Vista application. 3. Ensure the PC has internet connectivity. If it does not, a link to the offline installer is listed below in the troubleshooting steps. 4. Connect the UD512 to the host PC. 5. Wait approximately 10 seconds for Windows to install the driver. If windows presents any error messages, see the troubleshooting steps below. 6. Start the Vista application. 7. The following prompt will appear. 8. Ensure the red LED on the UD512 is flashing. 9. If the red LED is flashing, press OK to proceed. e2x2alianote: While all due care and attention has been taken in the preparation of this document, Jands Pty Ltd shall not be liable for any inaccuracies or omissions which may
39 Tech Bulletin #TBJLT185 Vista Consoles 10. Once the firmware has been installed successfully the following confirmation dialogue will appear. 11. Press ok. 12. Disconnect the UD512 from the host PC and then reconnect it immediately. 13. Close the Vista application. 14. Restart Vista and proceed the to the connect universes dialogue in the patch window to connect your show. Troubleshooting If the UD512 is still not working go to the device manager in Windows and identify the driver that has been assigned. USB Serial Convertor If the device shows up in the device manager as a USB Serial Convertor as illustrated below follow the instructions above to update it.
40 Tech Bulletin #TBJLT185 Vista Consoles FT232R USB UART If the device identifies itself as FT232R USB UART or an unknown device when connected to the PC 1. Disconnect the UD 512 from the host computer. 2. Connect the host computer to the internet. 3. Reconnect the UD512. This should enable windows to fetch the correct driver off the internet and result in device manager correctly showing the device as USB Serial Converter. If there is no access to the internet on the host computer, or the installation has not been successful, an offline installer can be activated by navigating to the "UD512_Offline_Setup.exe" in the WinUsbDriver subdirectory of the installation directory on the host computer as illustrated below.
