1 Revision Date: 5/31/2013 Time 1.0 Hours O V E R V IEW In this lab, you will set up a Virtual PC Environment that you can configure at home to complete the lab activities in this course. L AB ACTIVIT IES Exercise 1: Verify Your System Requirements Exercise 2: Install Virtual PC on Windows 7 Exercise 3: Create a Virtual Machine Exercise 4: Install Server 2008 on the Server 2008 DC Domain Image SYST E M REQUIREMENT S SOFTWARE-BASED / W RI TTEN ACTIVITIE S Windows Virtual PC is a feature of Windows 7 Home, Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise. To run Windows Virtual PC, your computer has to have the Intel VT or AMD-V features enabled in the BIOS. This will be covered in the lab steps To run virtual machines, you need to meet the minimum system requirements of both your host operating system that runs virtual machine, as well as each virtual machine that you run. Note: This lab is designed to help you set up a local lab environment for your remaining labs in this course and to teach basic operating system installation exercises. 2 EXERCISE 1: VERIFY YOUR SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS OVERV IEW: Windows Virtual PC is the latest Microsoft virtualization technology. You can use it to run more than one operating system at the same time on one computer, and to run many productivity applications on a virtual Windows environment, with a single click, directly from a computer running Windows Check Your Windows Operating System Properties. Q What Operating System edition are you running? Windows Virtual PC supports the following Host and Guest Operating systems: Host: Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Enterprise. Guest: Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) Professional, Windows Vista Enterprise Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Vista Business Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Enterprise. 2. Check your Processor Q What is your processor? Processor: Intel, AMD, VIA processors capable of hardwareassisted virtualization, with the setting turned on in the BIOS. If you are unsure if the processor will work, download this tool from Intel and it will tell you about your processor: DwnldID=7838 This tool will return a readout that looks like this: 3. Check your RAM Q How much memory do you have? Memory: 2GB of memory recommended. Cyanna Education Services, 2013 Page 2

3 4. Check your hard drive free space. Q How much free disk space do you have? Hard disk requirement: 20MB hard disk space for installing Windows Virtual PC. 5. Does your computer meet all the requirements? If yes proceed to the next exercise. If you re PC does not meet the requirements, you can still follow along in the next exercise or search on the Internet on how to do this EXERCISE 2: INSTALL VIRTUAL PC ON WINDOWS 7 OVERV IEW: In this exercise you will install Virtual PC for Windows 7, which you will use to virtualize additional operating systems. 1. Install a Virtual PC on Windows 7 1. For Windows 7 Navigate to the following link to download Virtual PC 2. If you have anything but Windows 7 Ultimate or Enterprise, or you don t want XP mode for Windows 7, Click the Don t need XP mode and want VPC only? Download Widows Virtual PC without Windows XP mode Link. 3. Complete the drop down boxes under Select your edition of Windows 7 and desired language for installation. 4. You should enter the system that you obtained from the exercise above and more than likely choose English 5. Follow the Install wizard 5. Click Download 6. When prompted to Install the following Windows software update? click Yes Cyanna Education Services, 2013 Page 3

4 EXERCISE 2: INSTALL VIRTUAL PC ON WINDOWS 7 7. Click I Accept to accept the license terms 8. The installation will complete and you will be prompted to restart the computer, click Restart Now 9. Restart the computer and log on as the administrator EXERCISE 3: CREATE A VIRTUAL MACHINE OVERV IEW: After downloading the software, you are now ready to create a virtual machine on your computer. Follow the steps to do so. 1. Start Windows Virtual PC 1. StartAll ProgramsWindows Virtual PC 2. Navigate again to the Virtual Machine folder in Virtual PC and click on Create Virtual Machine button 2. Enable virtualization in BIOS 3. If you receive the following message you will need to enable virtualization in your system BIOS 4. Restart the computer and access the system Startup options or the BIOS 5. Locate the Virtualization setting and set it to Enabled 6. Save and Close your BIOS and then restart your computer Note: If a virtualization option does not exist for your system, you don t have the Intel VT or AMD-V feature 7. Go to the following link for more information: 8. Virtualization not supported 9. Other errors can be encountered. 5 EXERCISE 3: CREATE A VIRTUAL MACHINE 3. Follow the steps in the Wizard 8. Name your virtual machine 9. Put in a Memory amount 4. Add a virtual hard disk 11. Choose your location 10. Click the Networking checkbox if you want the VM to connect to an external network 12. Check the Enable Undo Disks checkbox 13. Click Next button Undo Disks is a feature that saves changes to a virtual machine in a separate undo disk file in case you want to reverse 5. Choose the type of virtual hard disk If you are unsure which type you need, click the More about virtual hard disk types link 14. Click the disk option 15. Name your hard disk 16. Choose a location 17. Click Next button 6. Choose the size of your hard drive 18. Enter a size in MB 19. Click Create button 7. Navigate to folder to verify Virtual PC is 20. 6 installed EXERCISE 3: CREATE A VIRTUAL MACHINE The following window opens: 21. You can change the settings of the virtual system here. EXERCISE 4: INSTALL SERVER 2008 ON THE SERVER 2008 DC DOMAIN IMAGE OVERV IEW: In this exercise you will install Server Install Server2008 in Virtual PC You can now install Server 2008 on your Server 2008 DC Domain virtual hard disk. In the Virtual Machines folder select the Server 2008 DC image and click Settings Click on the DVD Drive setting Select Open an ISO image radio button and click Browse. Browse to the Operating System ISO folder and click on the Server 2008 trial edition and click Ok Now that you have attached the iso, you can launch the image as if the DVD is installed in a physical drive. You will now be booting to the installation DVD. The installation from this point forward is a standard operating system installation of Server Cyanna Education Services, 2013 Page 6

7 EXERCISE 4: INSTALL SERVER 2008 ON THE SERVER 2008 DC DOMAIN IMAGE 2. Install Server2008 When the installation launches review the default language, Time and Currency and Keyboard settings and click Next. Note: You may see a message saying that the mouse pointer must first be captured by the virtual machine window, click OK to that message to activate the image, Click Install Now Note: The Virtual Machine Additions are not installed currently, so your cursor will get trapped inside the image. To release the cursor, press the right ALT key on your keyboard when necessary Enter the product key or click Next if it s not available. Note: You can complete an installation of Server 2008 without an installation key which allows you to use the trial edition. If you don t have a key and click Next, you will receive a message that asks if you want to enter your product key now? Click No. Make sure Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (Full Installation) is selected or select it now and select the I have selected the edition of Windows that I purchased check box and click Next. Choose I accept the license terms and click Next Choose the type of installation. In this case choose Custom (advanced). You can only choose an upgrade if you launch the installation from within a compatible operating system. 3. Configure the Disks Choose the drive on which to install Windows Server The drive has to have at least 10 GB of free space and be configured as an NTFS partition. The disk also has to be a simple or dynamic volume and be registered in the BIOS. If any of these conditions are not present, the disk will not appear. Otherwise the available disks will be listed on the screen. You also need an extra partition that you will use later in this course. You can use the convert.exe utility to convert the disk from FAT to NTFS. You can create the extra partition later. Select Disk 0 Unallocated Space and click Next. 4. Complete the installation The Installing Windows screen will come up and the system will perform the installation in a series of steps with a percentage of completion for each step Copying files, Expanding files, Installing features, Installing updates and Completing installation. The installation can take a while and the system will restart one or more times during the installation process. Do not interrupt the installation. Once the installation completes, the system will restart automatically and you will be prompted to change the Cyanna Education Services, 2013 Page 7

8 EXERCISE 4: INSTALL SERVER 2008 ON THE SERVER 2008 DC DOMAIN IMAGE administrator password with the following message: You will need to type in a complex password, type in the password, p@ssword1300 and type it again in the Confirm password dialog box, click the right arrow or press Enter to confirm the password. You will see a message Your password has been changed, click OK. Installation is now complete. You will be logged onto the Server 2008 desktop. 5. Install the Integrated Components The virtual machine additions allow you to move your cursor between the virtual machine and host Click on Tools > Settings and choose the DVD drive. Navigate to the DVD drive in the machine settings and browse to the C:\Program Files\Windows Virtual PC\Integration Components folder and click on IntegrationComponents and click Open. If you are on a 64-bit operating system it s the Program Files (x86) folder. Close the settings Select Tools > Install Integration Components and click Continue in the Installation dialog box. If the Installation doesn t start automatically, navigate to the DVD drive and launch it manually by selecting Start > My Computer > right click the DVD drive and select Explore and click on the Setup.exe program This will launch the Integration Components Wizard Click Next The Integration Components will be installed Once the components are installed click Finish and then restart the computer when prompted On the Virtual PC menu select Ctrl+Alt+Del to send that function to the virtual machine and log on as the administrator. You should now be able to move the cursor between the virtual machine and the host machine. In the Initial Configuration Tasks dialog box, click Set time zone. Click Change time zone and choose your time zone and click OK. Verify that the date and time is correct and click OK again. Cyanna Education Services, 2013 Page 8

9 EXERCISE 4: INSTALL SERVER 2008 ON THE SERVER 2008 DC DOMAIN IMAGE At the bottom of the Initial Configuration Tasks dialog, choose Do not show this window at logon and click close. Shut down the Server Manager console Select Start > click the right arrow on the bottom right of the start menu and choose Shut Down. In the Shutdown Event Tracker choose Application Maintenance (planned) and click OK The image will be shut down. Now, your changes are saved to the undo disks. You will want to commit them to the virtual disk to make them permanent Navigate to the settings of your vhd. Choose Undo disks and then select Apply Changes. This can take a long time to commit to them. This will commit your changes by moving the undo disk data and overwriting the current configuration. Any time you want to save or undo the data you need to use this option. To undo your changes during a session and discard the information on the undo disks, you should use the close option from the Tools menu, you will examine this in a moment. Note: Depending on the version of Virtual PC you have installed, these settings may vary. If you have any questions contact your instructor Once the undo disk is merged with the virtual hard disk and the settings are saved permanently, the image will be shut down. Let the process complete fully before proceeding. 6. Discard a change from the undo disk To examine how undo disks work. Launch your virtual machine. You may be prompted for the logon with the following screen or the traditional logon screen: If you see the screen above, click on Use another account. If you see the traditional logon screen, send Ctrl+Alt+Del and type in the administrator username and password: Cyanna Education Services, 2013 Page 9

10 EXERCISE 4: INSTALL SERVER 2008 ON THE SERVER 2008 DC DOMAIN IMAGE 7. Create a backup copy of the virtual machine administrator / p@ssword1300 Close down server manager to access the desktop Right click the desktop and choose New > Folder Name the folder Discard To shut down the image and discard the change choose Action > Close You will see options to Hibernate, Shut Down, Turn Off or Turn Off and Discard Changes. These options accomplish the following: Hibernate: This is similar to putting a laptop in hibernation. When you hibernate a virtual machine, this action releases all physical resources that the virtual machine is using but you do not have to reboot it Shut down. This option shuts down the guest operating system safely and then releases all physical resources that the virtual machine is using Turn off. This option can cause data loss because it is the same as switching off the power button or pulling out the power cord on a physical computer Turn off and discard changes. This option is available only when the Undo Disks feature is enabled for the virtual machine. This option discards the changes that are stored in the undo disk. Choose Turn off and discard changes. Navigate to the My Virtual Machines\Server DC Domain folder under My Documents. Copy the folder and the images to a new folder called Server2008- DCDomain_ImageBackup. This will be a backup in case your image gets corrupted. Note that the image is very large. If you do not have ample space, you do not have to create the backup. CONC LUSIO N After performing these exercises, you should now be familiar with how to install Microsoft s Virtual PC software, trouble shoot errors and determine pre-requisites for supporting virtualization. You can now install other programs and Operating Systems and test them in a virtual environment.
