1 Document Overview This document is intended to provide the user guide for the management and monitoring of the IPVPN network, Ethernet and FR/ATM using NetReporting within the AAPT environment. This document will take the user through how to log onto the system through to drillingdown to the variety of detailed reports available depending on the service purchased via AAPT. 1.1 NetReporting Summary Net Reporting is a solution dedicated to AAPT customers. It presents network statistics and information related specifically to the performance of the customer's network services. Within the hierarchy of reports, you will be able to ascertain a number of Key Performance Indicators of your network. Within the portal you will have access to the health and highlevel indicators on the services which you have subscribed to. Some of these indicators include: Saturation of interfaces and devices. Quality of Service Reports. Availability of Services and Interfaces and Devices. Capacity planning of interfaces and/or devices. Displaying likely trends up to 3 months and the amount of time your interfaces/devices may become saturated. Page 3

2 Using AAPT NetReporting 2.1 Accessing NetReporting Upon purchasing an AAPT data service, customers are allocated a user name and password to access their reports. A hierarchy of passwords can be established for a customer giving varying levels of access to different staff such as supervisors and administrator or separate branch access. Customers are responsible for the security of usernames and passwords. AAPT will not be responsible for any unauthorised use of the reporting packages To access NetReporting, type the following URL into your supported Web browser: Then enter your customer identification code and password. Please note that your password is case sensitive. Once logged on, you will be presented with a summary that lists all the services that relate to your network. Page 4

If you wish to print the report, set up the page format to landscape and press the print icon. The reports have been provided in a variety of different file formats so that you can save the files to view at your convenience To log off from the service, simply exit the website via the Logoff button in the top-right corner. 2.2 Web Browser recommendations The portal is designed to work with browsers that conform to the specifications detailed below. Page 5

The 'Back' navigation button used in client Web browsers allows you to display the previous page delivered to the browser, regardless of whether the session is still valid on the server. This means that a Portal session may well have expired even though it is still possible to view the previous Portal page using the Back button. In this case, no operation will be allowed on the page, and it is no longer related to a session. We recommend you log off and close your browser when you have finished with Portal if you have displayed sensitive information on a shared client Client Requirements In order to view the Portal reports, client machines must have a supported web browser installed and properly configured. The supported versions of Web Browsers are: Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 and SP2, with the following versions of Java Plug-in: Microsoft Virtual Machine: 3810(**) Sun Java Plug-in: version 1.4.2_10 or version 1.5.0_07 Firefox 1.5 for Windows with Sun Java Plug-in version 1.4.2_10(*) or version 1.5.0_07 Mozilla 1.4 for Solaris 8 and 9 with Sun Java Plug-in version 1.4.2_10(*) or version 1.5.0_07 Mozilla 1.7 for Solaris 10 with Sun Java Plug-in version 1.4.2_10(*) or version 1.5.0_07 NOTE ** You may experience some freezes of portal pages on Internet Explorer with the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. AAPT recommends that you use a Sun Java Plug-in. This Portal will remain fully functional with more recent releases of these Web Browsers and Java Plug-ins, as long as no regressions or important changes are introduced by such releases. Web browser configuration: A Web browser, configured to accept cookies. Enable Java and JavaScript Enable Pop-ups If you wish to view PDF-format reports, you must install the Adobe Acrobat Reader software (Acrobat Reader version or above). Page 6

2.3 Getting started Upon log on the first screen displayed has been designed to display your network, and its performance at a glance. That is the first screen displayed highlights the network This summary page is aimed at management wishing to see how their network is performing without having to drill through numerous screens to arrive at the section required. The page was designed to display trouble spots during the past calendar month, not hiding these sites within the myriad of reports available to the customer. Page 7

3 General Screen layout In order to be able to properly navigate around the NetReporting portal some basic screen information has been documented in order to assist with reading and efficiently interpreting your network reports. In each report NetReporting has been designed to follow the same layout and logic. The following sections provide an overview of each of those sections to assist with navigation. The following scenarios shall exist and will display in the High-level Tabs at the top of the screen: Summary Displays Saturation for Network Device, Interface and Service Group. This is the first screen displayed after logging in. Availability Displays Service Group Availability, Network Element Availability and Backbone Availability. The default AAPT S number has been used so that customers are able to account for each of their services within the reporting portal. The reports group objects in various ways: Service Group: A group of Services Page 10

Service Type: A group of Service Type. State Region: A group of States Town/Suburbs: A group of Towns and Suburbs Interface Group: Group by type of Interface. Page 11

NB: Depending on the report being displayed the number in brackets (eg. number 3 below), explains how many objects the group contains. Page 12

3.4 Full Screen feature Click Full Screen at the bottom of the Displet to display the Displet in a new window. This gives you access to additional features and allows the window to be sized to fit the screens maximum resolution. An example, of this option is as shown below: Page 13

3.5 Filtering Reports Each report can be filtered when there is a input text bar at the bottom of the screen. A filter can be applied, either Numeric or Textual that allows each instance to be shown. This can be particularly useful when going through large amounts of instances or records. When the filter is applied, the text bar at the bottom of the screen will be greyed to indicate a filter has been applied to the selection. 1 Unfiltered Data Page 14

2 Filtered Data: Location = Kenmore and, Traffic Accepted > Drilling Down A drill-down is a link to another report to show more detailed information about a measurement. For each drill-down available in the Displet body, the standard cursor changes to a link cursor. Click to display the drill-down in a new window. Exporting data Click the PDF XML button to display or save the report in the following formats: The report opens in Adobe Acrobat, in the same window. (Make sure that Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed on your station if you intend to use this format). The report opens in a new window as an XML file. The way the XML elements are displayed (Tags/no tags, indentations, etc.) may vary depending on your browser. However, the file is structured as a well-formed XML file when saved on your disk. TXT XLS The report opens as a text file in a new window. The report opens as a Microsoft Excel file in a new window. If the application is not available on your station, you will only be able to save it on your disk. Using the Time bar You will use the Time bar located in the top right corner of the window to: Display data for a specific date and time in the report, Select a display rate. Extend or narrow the time span of the drill down report. Page 15

By default, the Time bar displays as follows, indicating the date, the current display rate then the time span: Click to display the most recent data in the database for the current report. Click to display data for one display period before the currently displayed time/date. Click to display data for one display period after the currently displayed time/date. 1. Manually edit the 'hours/minutes' and 'date' fields. This is an alternative to clicking the or buttons several times as described above. 2. Use the calendar option to enter a date. 3. Select a new display rate from the drop-down list. 4. If necessary, modify the time span for which you want to display data. 5. Click OK to validate your changes. The Time bar reverts to the initial layout and the data are refreshed in the report according to the new parameters. 6. Click the icon to go back to the main report. 3.7 Synchronise Report Data Reports require objects to be selected and then activated to load data into the report. This can be achieved with a number of user actions, each highlighted below: (1) The arrows selected will bring up a report in the window in the direction of the arrow mentioned. Hover over text will display the report that will be generated. (2) By right-clicking on the Site object, the reports available will be shown as a menu option. The report will then be synchronised with the object. (3) By right-clicking on the Instance, the reports available to synchroronise will be displayed. 3.8 Graph on Demand VistaPortal is offering several ways to display data from VistaMart. 20 4 Understanding KPIs This section gives you the definition and objective of each Key Indicator used in the NetReporting operational context. 4.1 Summary Page Device Saturation: Indicates the percentage of time that the network device was in 'degraded mode'. A device is considered 'degraded' when the average utilization of one its components -- CPU, memory, or buffer -- exceeds its threshold for the display period. Interface Saturation: Indicates the percentage of time that the network interface was in 'degraded mode'. A network interface is considered 'degraded' when the average rate of errors or utilization (for inbound and outbound traffic) exceeds its threshold for the display period. Service Availability: The percentage of time that a service is available for use in average for the display period. Page 18

4.2 Availability View Service Availability: The percentage of time that a service is available for use in average for the display period. Service Availability (BH): This is the same as Service Availability above, Except the data used is between AAPT Business Hours 7am to 7pm. Resource Availability: The percentage of time that a resource is available for use in average for the display period. Resource Availability (BH): This is the same as Resource Availability above, Except the data used is between AAPT Business Hours 7am to 7pm. Backbone Availability: The percentage of time that a backbone is available for use in average for the display period. Backbone Availability (BH): Page 19

This is the same as Backbone Availability above, except the data used is between AAPT Business Hours 7am to 7pm. 4.3 Utilization View CPU Measures the percentage of CPU time being used (on average) during each display period. Usage calculations are made for all CPUs of the monitored device. CPU Peak Measures the percentage of CPU time being used (on average) during each display period. Usage calculations are made for all CPUs of the monitored device. The indicator displays the peak over the display period MEMORY Peak Calculates the memory used by the network device as a percentage of available memory. The calculations for memory take into account the process and kernel values. The indicator displays the peak over the display period BUFFER UTILIZATION Measures the percentage of buffer types which were used during each display period and displays one value. It is calculated as the percentage of buffers used compared with the maximum number of buffers allowed. The indicator displays the peak over the display period UTILIZATION IN/OUT Shows the average utilization rate of the resource. Utilization measures the inbound and outbound traffic as a percentage of total bandwidth for the network interface. Utilization is usually shown against a predefined threshold. When a resource is used under a certain threshold, the resource is capable of giving good service. Above the threshold, the service Page 20

level drops and users feel the impact. For example, if traffic increases significantly on a LAN Interface or a WAN interface, its performance is likely to decrease, and thereby causing delays for users of the network. ERROR IN/OUT The Error IN and Error OUT indicators display the percentage of frames or packets that were detected in error during transmission or reception. An excessive error rate causes a high incidence of retransmission and consumes costly bandwidth. Error is calculated as the percentage of errored frames or packets which got discarded. This is also an indication of the quality of the transmission line. 4.4 Latency Page Latency Displays the Round Trip Time between two Network devices RTT Round Trip time between two network devices. Calculated using a Jitter Probe. Packet Loss SD/DS Packets Lost between two network Device. Calculated using a Jitter probe. SD Source to Destination, DS Destination to source. Jitter SD/DS Jitter between two network Device. Calculated using a Jitter probe. SD Source to Destination, DS Destination to source. Page 21

4.5 QoS Page Traffic Submitted Pre Policy Traffic. Traffic Accepted Post Policy Traffic. Traffic Dropped Traffic dropped as a result of applying QoS. 4.6 Capacity Planning View: Device Page SATURATION Page 22

Indicates the percentage of time that the network device was in degraded mode. A device is considered degraded when the average utilization of one its components - CPU, memory, or buffer - exceeds its threshold for the display period. TIME TO SATURATION indicator calculates the time remaining before your resources attain their capacity. This indicator is based on the most recent 30 data values collected for the saturation indicator. CPU Peak Measures the peak percentage of CPU time being used during each display period. Usage calculations are made for all CPUs of the monitored device. MEMORY Peak Calculates the peak memory used by the network device as a percentage of available memory. The calculations for memory take into account the process and kernel values. BUFFER Peak Measures the peak percentage of buffer types which were used during each display period. It is calculated as the peak percentage of buffers used compared with the maximum number of buffers allowed. 4.7 Capacity Planning View: Interfaces Page SMART UTILIZATION Page 23

Shows the level of targeted utilization of network bandwidth that takes into account the peaks and troughs over a period of 24 hours. The level of Smart utilization is calculated as the average rate of actual utilization plus the standard deviation. SATURATION Indicates the percentage of time that the network device was in degraded mode. A device is considered degraded when the average utilization of one its components - CPU, memory, or buffer - exceeds its threshold for the display period. UTILIZATION IN/OUT Shows the average utilization rate of the resource. Utilization measures the inbound and outbound traffic as a percentage of total bandwidth for the network interface. Utilization is usually shown against a predefined threshold. When a resource is used under a certain threshold, the resource is capable of giving good service. Above the threshold, the service level drops and users feel the impact. For example, if traffic increases significantly on a LAN Interface or a WAN interface, its performance is likely to decrease, and thereby causing delays for users of the network. 4.8 Capacity Planning View: QoS Page Page 24

5 Detailed Reporting Each report is available at a level displaying a level of detail enabling visibility of your network. The following section will show each section and the reporting available. 5.1 Availability Reporting The availability reporting tab displays all details for a customer s network relating to the customer edge equipment. The information can be broken down: 5.2 Utilisation Reporting Selecting the Utilisation tab enables users to monitor the use and loading of their equipment, including routers and interfaces. Users have the option of selecting different ways in which to view their data, either as a graphical or as an indicator. The differences between the two are that one adopts a % value to signify errors or issues, while the graphical uses time line graphs to display multiple indicators via time line graphs. Page 25

The user can select a device based on the state location, the lower half of the screen provides information on the customer interface, with: Utilisation Indicator mode The user can then select a device they wish to drill-down on. Simply select the device and double click on it to open a separate window. The window, displayed below gives a view of the device status. In the device status window some common descriptions are, LAN-PHYSICAL customer router interface reporting of the LAN I/F WAN-PHYSICAL customer router interface reporting of the WAN I/F PVC (PIR,CIR) L2VPN core PVC (MGX,IGX,BPX) reporting of the customer circuit WAN-CORE (PIR) IPVPN core PE reporting of the logical customer interface WAN-CORE (Speed) TLS core Ethernet reporting of the rate limited customer interface Page 26

LINK LOAD REPORT Link Load is the utilization of the WAN interface. This shows the amount of Bandwidth being utilized by the customer. WAN-PHYSICAL is the customer router interface reporting of the WAN interface. Page 27

LINK PERFORMANCE REPORT The link performance report shows the same data as the above link load report, albeit in percentages. Page 28

Utilisation Graphical The user selects the graphical option by clicking on the Utilisation tab. The user can either double click, or right click on the device and select the device and or the interface indicator. This will populate the two graphs shown in the diagram below for either the device or the interface which ever has been selected. Page 29

The Device and Interface indicators also allow users to view the data displaying or not displaying different variables. Users may also elect to view the data at a given time or over a period of time. Like all reports these can also be exported into different formats to save to a hard disk. Instant reporting is also available on the device and interface. The instant reports are selected either by right clicking on the device or interface and selecting the instant report menu option. Like all reports these can be selected to display data at a specific time, can be exported into other file formats and refresh every 5 minutes. Page 30

5.3 Latency Reporting Users selecting Latency reporting are able to view latency statistics for different variables. These include latency between for the edge, the core and edge to edge. The latency is measured using a combination of large and small packets All variables provide the user the ability to drill down into each section, Customer Edge to Provider Edge, Provider Edge to Provider Edge and or Customer Edge to Customer Edge. CE to PE shows statistics for large and small packets for a select day. By default it shows the previous day. All instant reporting displays statistics maximum and minimum round trip time and jitter. The Interaction class of service will also display the % of packets dropped during the period selected. Customer Edge to Customer Edge A ping is sent between the CE and the supplied Provider Edge router The packet is sent using the Business class of service with large and small packets Provider Edge to Provider Edge All customer are able to view the backbone statistics Page 31
