7 CHAPTER 1: Overview SURVEYOR lets system administrators measure and manage the energy consumed by networked computers. SURVEYOR provides centralized tools for power management, allowing administrators to implement policies that serve users while minimizing waste. The SURVEYOR system works by enforcing scheduled changes to the standard power management options of networked Windows computers. The SURVEYOR Reporter application lets administrators investigate how energy is being consumed. With this information administrators can implement policies that achieve energy management goals without inconveniencing users. SURVEYOR lifts power management from single machines to administrator-defined groups of machines, providing organization and control and increasing efficiency.

8 Chapter 1 Overview Using this Document This document provides instructions for installing and configuring a SURVEYOR system. The following documents also contain useful information: The SURVEYOR Administrator's Guide This document describes how to use the system after all components are installed and running. The SURVEYOR Reporter Guide This document describes how to use the Reporter application to analyze the power usage of all client computers. Release Notes This document contains current information on known issues affecting installation and management of the SURVEYOR system. Getting Updated Documentation The latest Verdiem documentation can always be found at: SURVEYOR Components The SURVEYOR system consists of four component applications running separately, and uses a database hosted by Microsoft SQL Server. Some additional tools used for occasional maintenance and system analysis are also provided.

Chapter 1 Overview 9 SURVEYOR Administrators SURVEYOR Clients SURVEYOR Database SURVEYOR Server SURVEYOR Reporter SURVEYOR components can run on separate machines. Although you may wish to run multiple SURVEYOR components on a single machine, each component can run on a separate machine.

10 Chapter 1 Overview The major components of the SURVEYOR system are: SURVEYOR Server SURVEYOR Server runs on a single computer, orchestrating power state changes and gathering usage data for all client computers. SURVEYOR Administrator SURVEYOR Administrator is a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in used to manage the SURVEYOR system. This component is automatically installed on the server machine, but it can also be run on remote machines used for management. SURVEYOR Client SURVEYOR Client is a lightweight and non-intrusive application that runs on all managed Windows computers, executing management tasks and communicating with SURVEYOR Server. SURVEYOR Reporter SURVEYOR Reporter generates energy consumption reports presenting data collected from client machines.

Chapter 1 Overview 11 Installation Order Upon installation, SURVEYOR Client automatically attempts to connect to SURVEYOR Server. If this connection initially fails, a client continues to reattempt connection with an increasing time period in between attempts. For this reason it is best that the server is available at the time of client installations. The recommended installation order is as follows: 1. SURVEYOR Server and Database After installing the server, installation status and database connectivity should be verified by running Administrator locally. 2. SURVEYOR Administrator and Reporter Create remote installations of Administrator and Reporter to verify availability of the server over the network. 3. SURVEYOR Clients Within several minutes of installing SURVEYOR Client, the client should connect to the server. If this connection succeeds, the client will appear when the SURVEYOR Administrator display is refreshed.

What's New in SURVEYOR 5.0 SURVEYOR 5.0 includes new capabilities as well as a number of improvements to existing features. Improved Power Management Functions SURVEYOR 5.0 introduces the following improvements to general power management functionality: the ability to remotely configure client wake-up behavior; the ability to configure client machines to wake on keyboard and mouse input; the ability to override a non-functioning Windows idle timer; improved reliability and client/server communication; the ability to safely power-down computers with applications left running; the ability to run custom scripts when power state changes occur; Improved Vista Support SURVEYOR 5.0 introduces the following integration with Windows Vista: the ability to set Vista-specific power management settings; integration with Vista security allowing SURVEYOR to track user activity; the ability to manage client machines when no user is logged in. Improved Administration SURVEYOR 5.0 introduces the following improvements to system management and diagnostic abilities: improved logging; the ability to gather extended system information from clients for system diagnostics and client usage reporting; the ability to manage clients based on individual hardware configuration; client settings are now stored in an XML file for easy reading and modification.

13 CHAPTER 2: Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server This chapter describes the process of installing the SURVEYOR Server application. Follow all instructions in order. At each step it is assumed that the previous steps were completed successfully. Before beginning installation, make sure you have quick access to the following materials: the SURVEYOR CD a SURVEYOR license file or text string SURVEYOR release notes If you experience any difficulties installing or configuring SURVEYOR, please refer to Troubleshooting on page 45. System Requirements for SURVEYOR Server Network Requirements The SURVEYOR Server host machine must be visible to all machines running SURVEYOR Client, Reporter, or Administrator. Operating System Requirements SURVEYOR Server runs on the following versions of Microsoft Windows: Windows Server 2008 Windows Server 2008 x64 Windows Server 2003

14 Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server Windows Server 2003 x64 Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 4 Windows 2000 Advanced Server Service Pack 4 Regardless of which operating system version is used, the most recent service pack available should be installed. Additional Software Requirements In addition, SURVEYOR Server requires the following software. Acceptable versions of the following requirements are included on the SURVEYOR CD: MDAC, version 2.80 or higher MDAC version information can be checked by viewing the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DataAccess. MSXML2 Windows XP includes MSXML2 by default, but Windows 2000 typically does not. Database Requirements SURVEYOR requires a single database hosted by one of the following database servers: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (Service Pack 4) Database Creation and Upgrade If there is no valid SURVEYOR database present at the time of installation, the SURVEYOR Server installer creates this database. If there is a valid SURVEYOR database used for a prior version of SURVEYOR, the installer upgrades this database. In the case that this database has been previously upgraded, the installer does not modify the database in any way. Database Performance Please note that using SQL Server 2005 Express or Desktop Engine limits the size of the database to 4 gigabytes. This restricts the number of clients that can be effectively managed. Systems managing more than 2000 clients must use the full version of SQL Server 2005 to host the database.

Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server 15 If your SURVEYOR system manages more than 10,000 clients, we recommend that the server is dedicated to hosting SURVEYOR, and does not provide any other critical services. When managing a large number of clients, SURVEYOR Server consumes at least 20% of system resources, and will be more effective running in isolation. Given sufficient hardware, 50,000 is the maximum number of clients that can be managed by a single SURVEYOR Server. If you must manage more than 50,000 clients, it is necessary to use multiple server installations. For a complete list of processor, disk space, memory and other hardware requirements, see Appendix A - General System Requirements on page 53. Preparing for Installation There are several preliminary investigations you can perform that will lead toward a successful SURVEYOR installation. 1. Identify all of the clients that will be managed. Although it is possible for your system to grow as needed, a more complete initial consideration of the clientele supported leads to a more robust and easily maintained structure. 2. Determine the power management capabilities of every client. This information will help you determine how to group clients. Clients that do not support suspend or hibernate functions should be placed in separate groups that implement policies which take this limitation into consideration. Clients with older AT power supplies are unable to be managed effectively. You may wish to reserve client licenses for more capable machines. 3. Obtain a machine to host SURVEYOR Server. In general, one machine hosting SURVEYOR Server is suitable for systems managing fewer than 50,000 clients. However, depending on the structure of your network you may wish to use multiple servers to eliminate cross-network traffic. Determine if you want to use a single machine to host both SURVEYOR Server and the database. If the machine is capable, hosting the database and server together reduces network traffic. Alternatively, a separate database server can be used. Please see the system requirements described in Appendix A - General System Requirements on page Determine a port number for client connections. All clients connect to SURVEYOR server through the same TCP/IP port. This port is assigned when SURVEYOR is installed. The default port number is If this port is being used by another application, choose a port number that is not used by other software on your server.

16 Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server If there is a firewall between the clients and the server, you will need to open the TCP/ IP port used by SURVEYOR. See the documentation provided by your firewall software for further information. If necessary, the port number may be changed after installation by changing the ListenPort registry key value on the server, and by changing the ServerPort registry key value on every client. The locations of these registry keys may be found in Appendix B - Registry Settings on page 54.

Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server 17 Installing the Server The SURVEYOR Server installation installs the Windows service that performs critical SUR- VEYOR functions as well as the SURVEYOR Administrator application. The installer also creates or updates the database used by SURVEYOR. To install the server: 1. Log in as a local administrator. 2. Run \Server\Setup.exe from on the SURVEYOR distribution. 3. Click Next on the welcome page. 4. Read the SURVEYOR license agreement. Choose I Accept, and click Next. 5. If necessary, change the installation folder. Click Next. Choose an installation folder. 6. Enter database connection information. Enter the SQL Server host machine name and instance if applicable. If the database is hosted locally, use the default setting (local). If no named instance is used then leave the Instance field blank. If you are using SQLExpress, enter SQLExpress as the instance name.

18 Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server Enter database connection information. The authentication method determines how the SURVEYOR service connects to the SURVEYOR database. The installation of SQL Server to which you are connecting must be configured to support the authentication method chosen on this page. Although the recommended practice is to use Windows Authentication consult your database administrator for specific information. If the SURVEYOR database is hosted on a separate domain, depending on how your network is configured it may be necessary to use SQL Server Authentication. 7. Before clicking Next on the Database Server page, verify that SQL Server is up and running on the database host machine. 8. Click Next. At this time the installer attempts to connect to the database host. If the connection fails, you will be notified and prompted to re-enter the database connection information. If the connection succeeds and the database does not exist, then the database is created. If a database for a previous version of SURVEYOR is found, then that database is updated when the server installation executes. 9. On the Configure Surveyor page you can change the TCP/IP port SURVEYOR uses to communicate with clients. Use the default if possible, otherwise choose a port that is not being used by another service on server machine or the client machines. The default port number is 5600.

Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server 19 Specify the port used by clients to contact the server. 10. Click Next and then Install. When the wizard finishes SURVEYOR Server is installed, including the Surveyor Server Windows service, the SURVEYOR Administrator application, and the SurveyorDB database. The next section describes how to verify that your server and database are functioning correctly.

20 Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server Validating and Configuring The server installation includes the SURVEYOR Administrator application. Use SURVEYOR Administrator to verify that the server and database have been installed correctly. Start SURVEYOR Server Use the Windows Services application to verify the following: SQL Server is running on the database host machine the Verdiem Surveyor Server service is running on the SURVEYOR host machine Start the Surveyor Server Windows service. Start SURVEYOR Administrator On the SURVEYOR Server host machine, from the Windows taskbar, choose: Start All Programs Verdiem Surveyor Administrator

Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server 21 Included User Groups The SURVEYOR installer creates two local user groups on the server machine: Two special groups are created by the installer. Users that are members of the SURVEYOR Administrators group are always granted all permissions to administer SURVEYOR, regardless of how specific permissions are set in SUR- VEYOR Administrator. Such users can perform all administrative tasks with SURVEYOR Administrator. Users that are members of the SURVEYOR Remote DCOM Users group have permission to administer SURVEYOR remotely. Remote administration is done using the SURVEYOR Administrator snap-in for Microsoft Management Console. For more information on installing Administrator, see Installing SURVEYOR Administrator on page 25. Set the Server Description Setting the Description property for your server makes reports generated by Reporter more readable. To set the server description: Right-click on the Surveyor node, and choose Surveyor Server Settings.

22 Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server Set the server description. Click the Server Settings tab, and enter a description in the Server Description field. Upgrading SURVEYOR Server To upgrade an older version of SURVEYOR Server: 1. Back up the SURVEYOR database. Use SQL Server Management Studio to save a backup of your SurveyorDB database. When performing special operations it is always wise to back up the data. 2. On the server machine, back up the surveyor.id and datastore.ini files, usually located in: C:\Program Files\Verdiem\Surveyor. Save these files in another folder. 3. Proceed with the steps described in Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server on page 13. There is no need to uninstall a previous version of SURVEYOR Server. The SURVEYOR database is automatically upgraded during the installation process.

Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server 23 Enabling Remote Administration To enable remote administration, you must turn off the Windows Firewall application on the SURVEYOR server host machine: 1. Choose Start Run. 2. Type Firewall.cpl at the command prompt, and hit Enter. Turn off the firewall on the SURVEYOR Server machine. 3. Choose the Off option. 4. Click OK. Initially, the SURVEYOR Remote DCOM Users group is empty. Until a user is added to this group, no one has permission to manage SURVEYOR remotely. You can add any Windows user to the SURVEYOR Remote DCOM Users group. After a user has been added to this group, this user is able to remotely connect using the SURVEYOR Administrator.

24 Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading SURVEYOR Server Allow administrators to manage SURVEYOR remotely. By adding users to this group you are only granting permission to connect to the server. You are not granting permission to perform any specific administration task. Appropriate permissions must be granted either through the Administrator application, by adding the user through a group s properties editor, or by adding users to the SURVEYOR Administrators Windows user group. See the SURVEYOR Administrator s Guide for details on granting specific administrative privileges.

25 CHAPTER 3: Installing SURVEYOR Administrator The primary tool for managing your SURVEYOR system, SURVEYOR Administrator runs on the SURVEYOR Server host machine. Administrator is automatically installed along with the server application. Alternatively, the Administrator application can remotely connect to SURVEYOR Server. This section describes how to install and run Administrator on a separate machine. SURVEYOR Administrator Requirements SURVEYOR Administrator 5.0 runs on the following operating systems: Windows Vista Windows Vista x64 Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 Windows XP Professional x64 Service Pack 2 Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 Installing Administrator To install Administrator: 1. Run setup.exe from in the Administrator folder of the SURVEYOR distribution. 2. Follow the instructions of the installation wizard. This simple installation requests only standard information.

26 Chapter 3 Installing SURVEYOR Administrator Connecting to a Remote Server After you have installed SURVEYOR Administrator as a stand-alone application, you need to specify the name of the SURVEYOR Server host machine to which it should connect. The first time you run Administrator, you will be prompted to enter the name of the computer hosting SURVEYOR server. Subsequently, Administrator will connect to the specified machine automatically. If you run Administrator as an MMC snap-in, you will be prompted to enter the name of the server machine when you add the Surveyor snap in to your management console.

Chapter 3 Installing SURVEYOR Administrator 27 Running Administrator as an MMC Snap-In If you wish to run SURVEYOR Administrator as a Microsoft Management Console snap in: 1. Choose Start Run. Launch Microsoft Management Console. 2. In the Run dialog, type: mmc.exe and click OK. 3. Select File Add/Remove Snap-In. Add a standalone snap-in.

4. Click the Add button on the Standalone tab. 5. Scroll down the list and select SURVEYOR. Choose the Surveyor snap-in. 6. Click the Add button. 7. Select the desired option. Local connects to SURVEYOR on the local machine. Remote connects to the SUR- VEYOR server found on the specified machine. 8. Click Finish. 9. If you wish, you can save your MMC configuration by choosing File Save.

29 CHAPTER 4: Installing SURVEYOR Client After verifying that SURVEYOR Server has been installed successfully, SURVEYOR Client may be installed on client machines. The SURVEYOR Server host machine should remain awake at all times. For this reason, it is recommended that you do not install SURVEYOR Client and Server on the same machine. This chapter describes several ways of installing the SURVEYOR Client application, including a typical manual installation, using a disk image to install the client onto a collection of new machines, and pushing the client to networked computers. SURVEYOR Client Requirements SURVEYOR Client 5.0 runs on the following operating systems: Windows Vista Windows Vista x64 Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 Windows XP Professional x64 Service Pack 2 Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 Although older versions of SURVEYOR Client may not support newer features such as Wake on WAN, all versions of SURVEYOR Client can connect to SURVEYOR Server 5.0. The client installation wizard requires a display of at least 800 x 600 resolution. Installation Options SURVEYOR Client may be installed using one of the following methods: Manual Installation This method involves running the installer directly on the client machine.

30 Chapter 4 Installing SURVEYOR Client This method is useful for test purposes and for small installations, but is not a practical way of deploying SURVEYOR Client to a large number of machines. The next section describes this process. Image Installation By this method, the client software is installed on a prototypical machine. After this machine is completely configured, an image is taken of the hard drive and this image is copied to other client machines. This method is useful if a number of client machines will be configured and deployed at one time. See Image Installation on page 32 for details. Push Installation By this method, a single server automatically installs the client software on any number of networked computers. This is the best method for distributing SURVEYOR Client to a number of machines that have already been configured and are currently being used. See Push Installation on page 33 for details. Manual Installation Although this method is the most direct, manually installing the client software is not recommended for installations involving many computers because of the time required and potential for disruption. This method may be useful, however, to repair a single installation of SURVEYOR Client. To manually install SURVEYOR Client: 1. Log in as a local administrator. 2. Insert the SURVEYOR CD and leave it in the drive throughout the installation. 3. Choose Install SURVEYOR Client from the Autorun window. If Autorun does not execute, run Setup.exe from the Client folder. 4. Follow the instructions of the installation wizard. 5. On the Installation Configuration page, if the default values are not appropriate choose locations for the data files and the log files.

Chapter 4 Installing SURVEYOR Client 31 Choose locations for SURVEYOR client components. Leave the checkbox labeled Add Verdiem as a trusted publisher, and the client machine will automatically accept shutdown scripts signed by Verdiem. If this box is unchecked, a digital certificate needs to be installed on the client machine for Verdiem scripting features to function properly. 6. On this page enter the name or IP address of the SURVEYOR Server machine. Specify the name of the SURVEYOR Server host machine and the port used.

32 Chapter 4 Installing SURVEYOR Client If the default is not suitable, enter the number of the TCP/IP port used by SURVEYOR Server. Click Next. 7. Click Finish. If you are installing on Windows 98 or ME, the computer will need to reboot. Complete the installation by restarting the computer and logging in as the same user. Image Installation This method of installing SURVEYOR Client is accomplished by installing the client manually on a prototypical computer, taking an image of this computer s hard drive, and copying this image to other computers. In order for SURVEYOR Client to avoid collisions with other clients when connecting to the server, each computer receiving the image must have: a unique DNS name a unique MAC address If all clients connect to a single server, enter the server's name when installing the client on the prototypical computer. If each client connects to one of several servers, after copying the image push a registry change to set the target server in batches. The registry key containing the server name is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Verdiem\SurveyorSD\ServerName. Preparing the Client for Imaging 1. Install SURVEYOR Client and verify that it connects to the server. 3. Delete all files within the Logs folder located within the client installation folder. 4. Delete all files within the Data folder located within the client installation folder. 5. Reset the Licensed flag by setting the following registry value to 0: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Verdiem\SurveyorSD\Licensed 6. Reset the Surveyor Server Id by deleting the following registry value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Verdiem\SurveyorSD\ServerId 7. Reset the Trace Log settings by deleting the following registry values: 2. Using the Windows Services control panel application, stop the Surveyor Client process. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Verdiem\SurveyorSD\SurveyorsdMax- Logs

Chapter 4 Installing SURVEYOR Client 33 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Verdiem\SurveyorSD\SurveyorsdLog- Size 8. If they are present, delete the following keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFT- WARE\Verdiem\SurveyorSD\: AppProtSettings Monitor2 MonitorSettings PrePowerPolicies (This key may not be present) Profile TraceLogSettings The system is now ready for imaging. Please refer to the documentation provided by your imaging software for further details on performing the installation. Push Installation This method involves using a deployment tool to remotely install SURVEYOR Client onto networked machines. There are many products that let you perform remote installations, including Microsoft Systems Management Server, ZENworks, as well as home-grown solutions. The SURVEYOR installer supports these methods of push installation by providing a command-line interface that lets you customize all settings. See Appendix D - Automated Installation Methods on page 60 for details. Contact Verdiem technical support for up-to-date instructions and guidelines specific to your environment. Performing a Silent Installation A silent installation requires no local user interaction and displays no information to the user. The client installation, silent or otherwise, must be performed by a user with administrative rights on the client machine. Verdiem Technical Support can help you create a script that allows the installer to run as a suitable user. For Windows 98, and ME installations, the machine will reboot automatically. Other operating systems may not need to reboot, however it is possible that a user-locked file can cause the Windows Installer to schedule a reboot. This reboot can be suppressed by setting the value of the REBOOT argument to ReallySuppress. Follow these steps to perform a silent installation:

34 Chapter 4 Installing SURVEYOR Client 1. Copy the contents of the Client folder to a location that is visible to all client machines. 2. Log on as an administrator. 3. You can either create a batch file that runs the setup.exe application, or you can run the.msi file directly. Create a text file named setup.bat containing the following command: setup.exe /s /V"/qn SERVER_NAME={server name} SERVER_PORT={port number} REBOOT=ReallySuppress" This command is case sensitive. Quote characters and spacing are critical. Arguments can be passed to the application by specifying the argument name, followed by the = character, followed by the argument value. Either this batch file must be in the same folder as the setup.exe file, or you must modify the command to reflect the actual location of the setup.exe file. To run the.msi file directly: msiexec.exe /i <path to MSI file> /qn SERVER_NAME={server name} SERVER_PORT={port number} 4. Replace {server name} and {port number} with appropriate values. SERVER_NAME and SERVER_PORT may be set on the command line as shown. The following table describes all of the arguments that may be specified: SERVER_NAME SERVER_PORT LOG_DIR DATA_DIR INSTALLDIR REBOOT Sets the name or IP address of the SURVEYOR server Sets the communication port through which server/client messages travel Sets the full path to the location of SURVEYOR client log files Sets the full path to the location of SURVEYOR client data files The folder where SURVEYOR Client is installed. The default value is C:\Program Files\Verdiem\SurveyorSD. Set this argument to ReallySuppress to suppress client machine reboot.

Chapter 4 Installing SURVEYOR Client 35 Removing SURVEYOR Client SURVEYOR Client may be remotely uninstalled from client machines using a process similar to the installation process. Follow the above instructions for performing a silent installation, using instead the following command: setup.exe /x /s /v/qn When setup.exe is run in this way, the setup application silently removes the SURVEYOR Client from the machine. Validating Client Installations Once you have installed SURVEYOR Server and at least one client, you may verify that the client was installed successfully. Use SURVEYOR Administrator to determine which clients are connected to the server. 1. Start SURVEYOR Administrator. 2. Expand the Power Management node, click on the power management group that you expect to contain the client being verified. Once clients have connected to the server, descriptive information is displayed within Administrator. By default, clients are placed in the Default group. Verify that the each client has the following setting values: Last Connected - Today Licensed - Yes SmartProfile Settings - current

36 Chapter 4 Installing SURVEYOR Client Monitor Settings - current If a large number of clients are attempting to connect simultaneously it may take several minutes. You can also verify each client machine individually: 1. On the client machine, run SURVEYORStatus.exe You can find this executable file in the SurveyorSD\Bin folder on the client machine. This utility displays status information for the client. The Surveyor Client Status tool can be run on client machines to verify connection status. 2. Verify that the client is connected to the server. If power management is being enforced for the client, use the Power Options Properties control panel application to verify that the correct power scheme is selected: 1. Choose Start Run. 2. In the Run dialog, type powercfg.cpl, and click OK. 3. In the Power Schemes tab, verify that the correct power scheme is currently selected. 4. In the SURVEYOR tab, verify that the correct profile settings are shown.

Chapter 4 Installing SURVEYOR Client 37 Repairing Broken Connections If the machine hosting SURVEYOR Server changes network identity, you need to update the client-to-server connection. You can repair a broken connection by modifying the values of the following registry keys on the client machine: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Verdiem\SurveyorSD\ServerName and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Verdiem\SurveyorSD\ServerPort Change the values of these keys to reflect the new server name and connection port number. After modifying these keys, SURVEYOR Client must restart before it will connect.

39 CHAPTER 5: Installing SURVEYOR Reporter This section describes the installation and configuration of SURVEYOR Reporter. Prerequisites Reporter must be installed on a machine that has network access to the SURVEYOR database in addition to the following requirements: SURVEYOR Reporter System Requirements SURVEYOR Reporter 5.0 runs on the following operating systems: Windows Vista Windows Vista x64 Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 Windows XP Professional x64 Service Pack 2 Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 Database Requirements For Reporter to function properly, the SURVEYOR database server must satisfy the following requirements: If Reporter is running from a machine other than the SURVEYOR Server host, then remote database connections must be enabled on the database host. Users of Reporter have been added to the Surveyor Reporter database role for the SURVEYOR database. Please see Database Access on page 40 for details.

45 CHAPTER 6: Troubleshooting This section presents a list of issues commonly encountered installing SURVEYOR, and offers suggestions for getting back on track. You can also find troubleshooting information in the release notes. System Installation Symptoms Installation displays an error about insufficient privileges. Troubleshooting Generally this error appears during client installation on Windows 2000 and Windows XP if security policies are set to prevent the MS Windows Installer from running. Use the Group Policies console to check your security policies, especially the Disable Windows Installer setting. This error may also occur if you attempt to run the installation program as a non-administrative user. If you are attempting to install SURVEYOR Client with login scripts, contact Verdiem technical support for information on running login scripts without administrative permissions.

46 Chapter 6 Troubleshooting Symptoms SURVEYOR Server requires SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 or higher. Troubleshooting The installer has tried to connect to a version of SQL Server 2000 that does not have Service Pack 3. To verify that SQL Server 2000 has SP3 installed, open the Query Analyzer and enter the following command: SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('PRODUCTLEVEL') If you are using MSDE, enter the following command line at the command prompt: osql -E -Q "SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('PRODUCTLEVEL') The value returned should be "SP3" or higher. If a lower version, or a null value, is returned, install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4, included in the Resources folder of the SURVEYOR CD. Installer cannot connect to a remote database even though SQL Server is running. Check that you entered the correct database connection information on the database connection page of the server installation wizard. Make sure MDAC 2.81 or later is installed. MDAC 2.81 is included on the SURVEYOR CD in the Resources folder. Make sure that both the installing user and the database user have the correct access permissions to the SURVEYOR database. See Connecting to a Remote SQL Server 2005 Database on page 46 for instructions on granting database access permissions. If there is a firewall in between the SURVEYOR Server and the database host, you may need to open one or more ports for communication. SURVEYOR Server requires Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.81 or higher to connect to a remote database. MDAC is the database interface that lets SURVEYOR use SQL Server. This component must be installed on SURVEYOR Server machines that connect to a remote database. The SURVEYOR Server installer will automatically check for MDAC 2.81 during installation. MDAC Version 2.81 is available in the Resources folder on the SURVEYOR CD. To determine which version of MDAC is currently on your system, use regedit to view the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\DataAccess If the value for the FullInstallVer property is less than 2.81, you need to install MDAC 2.81.

Chapter 6 Troubleshooting 47 Symptoms After an upgrade, the installation appears to have succeeded, but only the Default group is visible in SURVEYOR Administrator, and it is empty. Troubleshooting SURVEYOR Server connection properties may have been corrupted during the upgrade. Assuming the default install location was used, check that the connection string in C:\Program Files\Verdiem\SUR- VEYOR\Data\datastore.ini is correct. Make sure that the data source property is set to the name of the database host machine, and the initial catalog property is set to the name of the SURVEYOR database. Also check that the server ID in C:\Program Files\Verdiem\SURVEYOR\Data\SURVEYOR.ID matches the result of the SQL query: SELECT server_uid FROM tblserver performed on the SurveyorDB database. If the above SQL query returns multiple rows, the installer may have created a new server ID after failing to detect the existing ID. To determine which server GUID to use, run the SQL query: SELECT server_uid, count(*) FROM tblclient GROUP BY server_uid See how many clients are connected to each server object. Copy the server_uid that has a nonzero number of clients into the SURVEYOR.ID file. Installation of SQL Server Express 2005 SP1 fails with this error: "An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'" A previous installation of SQL Express may have failed. This can be fixed by uninstalling SQL Server Native Client as follows. 1. Extract SQL Express files to a separate directory. 2. From a command prompt, run the command: SQLEXPR.EXE /X and select a directory name. 3. Within the directory of extracted files, double click setup\sqlncli.msi to run it. 4. Select Remove. 5. Reboot the computer. 6. Run the SQL Express installation again.

48 Chapter 6 Troubleshooting Symptoms SURVEYOR Server reports that it cannot connect to the database, in the SURVEYOR log file or in the SURVEYOR Administrator console. Troubleshooting 1. Check the SURVEYOR connection string in datastore.ini for correctness. 2. Make sure the SQL Server service is started. 3. If using a remote machine for SQL Server, make sure both the SURVEYOR machine and the SQL Server machine are properly connected to the network. 4. If using a remote machine for SQL Server, and the remote machine has a firewall enabled, make sure the firewall settings allow an exception for the SQL Server process and/or ports. 5. If the SQL Server is a named instance (e.g. server\sqlexpress or server\sql2005), and you specified Integrated Security (Windows Authentication), and you enabled only Named Pipes as the SQL connection protocol, make sure the SQL Browser service is running. 6. If this doesn t solve the problem, contact Verdiem technical support for assistance. A client cannot connect to the server. 1. Verify that the client machine is visible to the server. From the server machine, choose Start Run and enter the command: ping {client machine name} If the client replies then the client machine is visible to the server. If there is no reply, then you need to make sure that the client is visible over the network. 2. Using the same technique, verify that the server machine is visible to the client. From the client machine, ping the server machine. 3. Verify that the port used by SURVEYOR is open. On both the client machine and the server machine, either firewall software must be turned off, or the SURVEYOR port must be open. See your firewall software documentation for details.

Chapter 6 Troubleshooting 49 Administrator/Server Connections Here are some issues that may be encountered connecting to a remote server: Symptoms Could not connect. Error message: You do not have appropriate DCOM permissions to contact this server. Troubleshooting This error occurs when the Verdiem Surveyor Server service is not running on the server, or the user does not have DCOM access permission. Make sure the Verdiem Surveyor Server service is running on the server machine. Make sure you are logged on as a user that is a member of the SURVEYOR Remote DCOM Users group on the server machine. Could not connect. Error message: SURVEYOR Server Unavailable. Please make sure that it is started and the DCOM configuration is correct. There are currently no licenses loaded. Use the Manage Licenses dialog to add licenses. This error occurs when the SURVEYOR Server is not accessible through the network. Possible causes include: The server is turned off or disconnected from the network. The server has Windows Firewall turned on, or another firewall is enabled and preventing access. This message appears when the SURVEYOR Administrator application has not yet loaded any client licenses. SURVEYOR Administrator will function normally after Clicking OK, but power management policies will not be enforced until licenses are added. For more information on adding licenses, see the SUR- VEYOR Administrator's Guide.

50 Chapter 6 Troubleshooting Client/Server Connections Here are some issues that may be encountered connecting to the server: Symptoms A client is not connecting to the server. Troubleshooting Verify that the SURVEYOR Client application has been installed: Check for the presence of program files in the installation directory. With the Add or Remove Programs control panel application, locate the Verdiem Surveyor Client application. Verify that the Surveyor Client service is running. With the Windows Services control panel application, locate the Verdiem Surveyor Client service. Make sure its status is Started. Verify that the client computer can contact the server. Open a Windows command prompt, and type: ping <server name> Verify that any firewall software, if it is running, allows connections through the port used by SURVEYOR. This port number is specified during the installation, and the default value is Contacting Verdiem Technical Support If you are unable to diagnose and fix a problem, please contact Verdiem's technical support: support@verdiem.com Phone: VERDIEM ( ) Please send the following information by , or have it available when you call (see the file Support Request Form.txt on the CD): 1. Name, position, company, and Verdiem customer ID number 2. address and phone number

53 CHAPTER 7: Appendices Appendix A - General System Requirements Client System Requirements The following details the approximate system requirements for a SURVEYOR Client installation. These requirements do not change significantly after installation. installer size: 6.44 Mb disk usage after installation: 1 Mb default installation allocates an additional 5 Mb for log files; this quantity may be changed after installation. memory required: 7 Mb RAM Server Sizing Recommendations Server sizing recommendations depend on the number of SURVEYOR clients to be supported. Contact Verdiem Technical Support for performance data. SURVEYOR can readily handle 50,000 clients with commonly used dual processor server configurations. Smaller numbers of clients require less memory and processing power. Install Footprint: Installer size: 9 Mb Disk usage after install: 11 Mb SURVEYOR Administrator and SURVEYOR Service in memory: 9.6 Mb RAM Data store: 600 Mb per year for every 1,000 clients controlled and reporting data Network Bandwidth Requirements 1. Initial connection of a brand new client with default profile to a server:

54 Chapter 7 Appendices ~1.25 Kb sent from client to server (spread across 5 messages) ~4 Kb sent from server to client (spread across 5 messages) 2. Every time a client is restarted (rebooted) or wakes up from sleep state, assuming no change in profile, monitor, or trace log settings and no logs to send: ~600 bytes sent from client to server (1 message) 3. Sending of logs daily: (on connect or once daily scheduled by admin) ~600 bytes of system state, sent from client to server, per day ~200 bytes for each exception generated, sent from client to server ~600 bytes of user activity data, sent from client to server, daily (assuming approximately 20 user-activity events/day) 4. Client trace log request: (only at request of admin). Maximum 1 Mb of data. Note: If data cannot be sent from the client to the server for any reason, then data accumulates on the client until it can be sent to the server. For this reason, data from several days may be sent to the server during a single transaction. Appendix B - Registry Settings Server Registry Settings Registry keys located in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Verdiem\SURVEYOR\.
