1 Echo360 Personal Capture Echo360 Personal Capture allows you to create recordings in your office. Simply install the software on your computer and you can record what you see on the screen plus audio, and even video from a webcam. Lectures will be made available in Canvas to your students. 2 Before You Can Record Your Lecture You will need to be set up in Echo360 by an administrator so that your recordings will be uploaded into your class. Contact the Support Center at or x4225 with your request (include your class name and section, dates, times, and locations) Your course in Canvas Echo360 Personal Capture software installed on your computer Additional hardware dependent on your computer setup (e.g. microphone, webcam) Username and password for Echo360 (access given by an Echo360 administrator) Training on how to use Echo360 Personal Capture Accessing Echo Visit the Echo360 login page at 2. Login with your SVSU address and password. Software Installation 1. Click the gear in the upper-right hand corner of the Echo360 cloud platform and choose Downloads. 2. Click the appropriate download for your computer, Mac Download or Windows Download. The software installer will download to your computer. Once the download has finished, install the software onto your machine. Update the Software Echo360 periodically will release updates to the software. If your software is out-of-date, there will be a notification in the lower left corner of the program near the version number. A software upgrade should only take a few moments. 1. 3 2. You will see the progress bar as its downloading. 3. The installation file will download to your Desktop, double click the application file. 4. Proceed with following the onscreen prompts to install the updated software. It should launch the program after installation. Echo360 in Canvas There is an Echo360 button present in the global navigation menu in Canvas. When you or your students click the button, they will be taken to the Echo360 class list where they can view recordings for the class. Office: Zahnow Library, First Floor 3
4 What's Recorded? Echo360 can record what's being shown on computer's screen, your voice, and either a webcam or document camera previewed on the computer screen. Computer Screen. The computer screen will always be recorded. Prior to recording, open up any websites, PowerPoint presentations, or other resources so they are ready to go. Microphone. Your voice will be recorded either from the microphone on your computer, or with a USB microphone. You can even record your voice through a webcam equipped with a microphone. Make sure that the front of the microphone is facing you. Use the Echo360 preview to verify that the audio is detected. Webcam. You can use the webcam on your computer, or a USB webcam to record you. Use the Echo360 preview to verify that the webcam is pointed at you. If not, adjust as needed. Try to keep within the field of view of the webcam as much as possible during recording. Webcams are not meant to record writing on the whiteboard, or objects at a distance. Document Camera. While not common, you can check out a document camera from us, attach it to your computer by USB, and record the footage. Document Camera Previews If you use a document camera with Echo360, controls for the camera will be displayed on the computer screen. 5 Create a Recording Ad hoc recordings are recordings that you start and stop using the Echo360 software. 1. Launch Echo360 from the Start Menu. 2. Type a title for your recording and verify the input sources. Input sources: (e.g. audio, screen, and webcam), audio level (volume should register in the yellow-toorange zone, about 75%), and preview. You may have multiple choices for audio and camera displays (depending on your computer setup) so make sure you choose the correct options. Check Auto-Publish to instantly publish to your library or course after you have stopped recording; without editing your video. Office: Zahnow Library, First Floor 5
6 3. Ready to go? Click Record. Echo360 will display a 5 second countdown, then minimize to the taskbar. When recording, the Echo360 icon in the taskbar will appear with a red dot. Pause a Recording You can pause a recording at any time. 1. Click the Echo360 icon in the taskbar. 2. Click Pause. The taskbar icon will change. Two hashes (vertical bars) will appear in place of the red recording dot. Also, the Echo360 window will indicate that the recording is paused. Office: Zahnow Library, First Floor 6
7 Resume a Recording Don t forget to resume recording if you're not done! 1. Click the Echo360 icon in the taskbar if the Echo360 window isn't visible. 2. Click Resume. Recording will immediately resume, the Echo360 window will minimize, and the taskbar icon will change back to the icon with the red dot on it. Stop a Recording When you're finished, make sure you stop the recording. 1. Click the Echo360 icon in the taskbar. 2. Click Stop. The recording will be saved to your computer and appear at the bottom of the window. You can publish the recording, edit it, or delete it. Edit a Recording You can immediately edit your recording or wait until later. Edits in Personal Capture. Editing a recording cannot be undone after the edits have been applied. 1. Hover over your recording and click the pencil icon to edit your video. 2. The editor will open. Echo360 allows you to make basic edits, such as cutting off the beginning and ends of the recording and cutting out time in the middle (not typically recommended). 8 3. Use the editing tools to make changes to the recording. 4. Click Apply edits to make changes permanent. Publish a Recording You can immediately publish your recording, or wait until later. 1. Click the check icon to Publish. 2. Before publishing, verify the information for the recording such as the Title. Most important, choose the location this can be your personal library or a course. 3. Click Upload. Office: Zahnow Library, First Floor 8
9 4. That's it! You're done! You will return to the list of recordings and the publishing progress will update for that recording. Delete a Recording Delete only those recordings that you no longer need. If you have already published a recording, you delete it from your computer, it will not be deleted from the server. Delete after publishing. If you have not published your recording and delete from your computer, SVSU ITS cannot restore it since it local to your machine. Deleting a recording cannot be undone. 1. 10 What to do After Recording Leave the computer on, you can log out but don't turn the computer off. It could take a few minutes to several minutes for processing. Once your recording is uploaded to the Echo360 server, it is put in a queue for processing. The time it takes to upload to your library or course depends on a few factors. o Your internet connection o Video length o The number of recordings ahead of yours. o It could take a few hours before your video is available. Checking Your Recording's Progress You can check its progress on the server. 1. Visit and log in with your username and password or if you have an Echo360 section click the Echo360 tab in your Canvas course. 2. Click All Content and look for your video. a. You may need to sort to see your video or refresh your screen a few times. A quick keyboard shortcut is to press F5 on your keyboard. 3. You can continue to work while you video is uploading. 4. You will receive an from Echo360 to your SVSU when your video is available for viewing. Processing time. It can take some time so please be patient.
