2 Introduction Once you have clicked on the link and the book has loaded ( it will take a few moments ) you will be presented with the appropriate front page for the section you wish to consult, Fully Listed Companies, AIM, Tables and Directors Dealings and Listed Companies resident abroad ( Fully listed and AIM ). The user can move backwards and forwards through REFS by clicking on the appropriate arrow to the left or right of the page. 2

3 Navigating through the book In order to navigate quickly through the pages click on the down arrow at the bottom of the page. This will bring up a panel of pages preceding and pages following the current page. To see the page numbers ahead simply place the cursor over the page and the page number will be displayed as below (page ). Accessing the functions and features of the book In order to access the functionality of the book click on the arrow at the top of the page to view the range of options. 3

4 Commonly Used Features These are the features explained further on in these pages. The print feature is not described in this document because the response to the Print command will differ between users depending on the print drivers and printers they have installed. It is recommend to keep the mouse cursor over the 'up' arrow until the feature icons are displayed because moving the mouse cursor away from the up arrow even momentarily can cause the feature list to disappear. Once the features are displayed then staying within the black shaded area move the mouse to the desired feature. Passing the cursor over each feature displays the name of the feature. Downloading to your laptop for offline access In order to download a copy of Digital REFS to your laptop for occasions when you will not have access to Wi-Fi, click on the download icon which looks like this. Once the download has completed you can go offline and access the book without the need to connect to the internet. 4

5 General Comments on downloading and Archiving Digital REFS The following is some general advice regarding downloading and archiving Digital REFS. The file which is downloaded from the website for offline viewing without the need to access Wi-Fi is the same name (offline.exe) irrespective of the particular version of Digital REFS which one has downloaded. There is therefore a danger that unless one sets up suitably labelled folders in which to store each new version and each of the differing publications within the same series, for instance UK Fully Listed Companies and UK AIM Companies, the latest copy will override the previous copy. We suggest therefore that prior to downloading REFS the user sets up a directory structure along the lines below according to the users' own preferences. Here I have set up a main directory called REFS and within that two sub directories called JULY REFS and AUGUST REFS. Within each of these two I have created two further directories called UKAIM and UKFULL. This is just by way of example to illustrate our suggestion if you wish to archive your editions of REFS for future viewing. 5

6 Some notes for Chrome Users (Internet Explorer notes follow on after this advice to Chrome Users) Once the download is complete you will be presented with the following warning message. The message may read 'offline.exe is not commonly downloaded' or the version number may be offline(2).exe depending on how many versions of the offline book you have downloaded to your Download folder. There is no difference between the two messages. However once you have downloaded the file and moved it to another folder it is a good idea to delete the latest copy of 'offline.exe' from your Download folder. At this point you need to get past the 'Discard' option. To do this follow the instructions in the next screen on the following page. 6

7 To the right of the word 'Discard' you will see a thin greyed out ribbon with a small down arrow. Click on this small down arrow to bring up the option to either keep the download or Learn more' to bring up further instructions from your browser. Once you press 'Keep' you will be presented with the following options: Select 'Show in folder' to go to the Download area. You can now copy the 'offline.exe' file to your chosen directory. 7

8 Some notes for Internet Explorer users Once you have clicked on the download button it may appear that nothing has happened. However of you look to the bottom of your screen you will notice that the Internet Explorer Icon is flashing on the Task Bar. Click on the flashing icon to bring it up. Click on the 'View Downloads' page to bring it up on your screen. You will then be presented with the following option. Click on the Down Arrow alongside the 'Save' button to bring up the following options. 8

9 Choose 'Save as' and then select the relevant folder as described above in the General Instructions above to which you which you wish to save the Offline edition of Digital REFS. Some notes for Firefox users Some Firefox users may be presented with the following screen immediately after clicking on the link supplied to access Digital REFS. As a Firefox user you will no doubt be aware that unlike Chrome or Internet Explorer which bundle up plug-ins as part of their browsers, Firefox takes a different approach and requires it's users to take control of their plug-ins. If you have any difficulties with this please refer to the instructions given on the following web page from the Mozilla Firefox Support group by clicking on the link below. In Firefox when you click the download button you will be presented with a dialogue button like the one below 9

10 Press 'Save File' to download the file. Firefox will automatically download the file to your designated download folder, normal the Download folder within your Documents folder. The progress of the download is shown by the download progress bar at the top right hand corner of the browser as shown below. The time remaining for the download to complete is given in minutes and seconds. In the above example 8 seconds remain. Once the download is complete you can go to the directly to the Downloaded file by clicking on the blue arrow as shown below and the clicking on the text labelled 'Show all Downloads' as shown below. 10

11 Full Screen Mode To set the page to full screen use the full screen button which looks like this. To return to normal view press the escape button on your keyboard Bookmarks Should you wish to preserve the location of a particular company for future reference then whilst on that particular company you can select the bookmark feature which is activated by clicking on the bookmark icon displayed below. This will bring up the Bookmarks tab wherein you can either jump to the page required or set the current page to be bookmarked. In the example below if one wanted to view page 15 simply click on the image labelled page 15. You will be taken to page 15. If you wish to delete your bookmarks then tick the ones to be deleted in the tick-box below the page and then click on the word 'delete' This feature can be useful when the user wishes to compare two or more companies. Instead of scrolling through each time to each of the required pages, the user can set up bookmarks for each company and the use the bookmarks to rapidly retrieve each of the required pages. 11

12 Thumbnails In order to bring up a page within close proximity to the page on which one currently has open the thumbnail feature is useful. It is accessed via the icon pictured below. 12

13 Increasing the font size (zooming mode) In order to zoom into the text, simply click anywhere inside a page and the page will zoom. A slider will be presented (as displayed above) which can be adjusted to increase or decrease the zoom. To return to normal mode simply double click anywhere. Closing the book Finally to exit the book simply press the exit button on the features panel (as displayed below). 13
