Before You Begin Welcome to Unify DBIntegrator. Unify DBIntegrator allows you to quickly and efficiently provide client-server data connectivity between single or multiple Unify DataServer NT servers and ODBC applications. Using Unify DBIntegrator you can open all your data sources to all your clients by means of a single thin ODBC driver. Unify DBIntegrator allows direct communication between client computers and the server using TCP/IP for your LAN and WAN. Data encryption and HTTP tunneling (to ensure secure data transfer and firewall support over the Internet) are also supported. With all administration and maintenance handled from the server, end users work uninterrupted while you set up, edit, or remove data sources or perform other administrative tasks at the server. And Unify DBIntegrator s flexible deployment options make it the best choice for supporting your internal LAN users, your distributed WAN users, and even your Internet users. There are only two components of Unify DBIntegrator to install: Unify DBIntegrator Server Unify DBIntegrator Client for end-user machines And installing Unify DBIntegrator is easy with the easy installation program, server software and drivers are installed in one easy setup program. To install Unify DBIntegrator Client, choose from these installation methods: Copy Unify DBIntegrator Client to a network location for users to install at their convenience. By default, Unify DBIntegrator Client is configured for an interactive installation. However, you can turn this option off so users can run Setup to install Unify DBIntegrator Client with the default settings or settings you have pre-configured with no user input required. 7

Distribute the Unify DBIntegrator Client disks. Users can install the software interactively or non-interactively, depending upon the configuration you select. Send Unify DBIntegrator Client to your end-users as an attachment. Download Unify DBIntegrator Client for JDBC on demand to browsers for use by Java applets. For more information, see Using Unify DBIntegrator Client for JDBC (DBIntegrator_JDBC.html) which is installed with Unify DBIntegrator Client for JDBC. This manual describes how to install Unify DBIntegrator on a Windows NT server, and how to install Unify DBIntegrator Client on end-user machines. It also includes information on the Unify DBIntegrator ODBC driver. Refer to Chapter 4: Troubleshooting if you have problems. TIP The Readme file contains last-minute information related to the installation. Use an editor such as Notepad or Write to read the file before you install. 8 Installing and Configuring Unify DBIntegrator

System Requirements Unify DBIntegrator Server for WIndows NT NOTE These requirements assume you ve already installed Unify DataServer for WIndows NT. An Intel 486 or Pentium CPU computer, with 32 MB of RAM (100 MB recommended) A hard disk, with 3.1 MB of free disk space CD ROM disk drive Windows NT 4.0 with service pack 4 or higher Network adapter with TCP/IP networking option Unify DBIntegrator Client for Windows 95/98 or Windows NT An or Pentium CPU computer, with 8 MB of RAM A hard disk, with about 1.8 MB of free disk space A disk drive that can read high-density 3-1/2 inch disks (optional can be installed from a network location) Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 95/98 TCP/IP networking option Before You Begin 9

Client Version Compatibility The Unify DataServer for NT ODBC Driver is provided with Unify DBIntegrator Server, which is included on the Unify DataServer for Windows NT/95 CD. Unify DBIntegrator is installed (and licensed) separately. It enables client applications to access the database via Unify DBIntegrator Client for ODBC or for JDBC. You must use a compatible Unify DBIntegrator Client. Please refer to the Readme for information on which Unify DBIntegrator Client version to use. Unify DBIntegrator and TCP/IP Unify DBIntegrator Client for ODBC uses a Winsock-compatible TCP/IP transport protocol to communicate with Unify DBIntegrator on the server in an Ethernet or token ring network environment. 10 Installing and Configuring Unify DBIntegrator

Unify DBIntegrator Installation Steps To ensure that your Unify DBIntegrator installation is successful, we recommend you follow these steps: 1. If another copy of Unify DBIntegrator is currently installed, first stop it (that is, stop the system services) and then uninstall it. 2. Ensure that the TCP/IP networking option is installed correctly on the server and on all client computers. Check network communications between client workstations and the Unify DBIntegrator server. Although the default Use Server List option on clients uses TCP/IP, broadcasting is used if the server list fails. Unify DBIntegrator servers rely on broadcasting to communicate with one another. If you have multiple Unify DBIntegrator servers and you want them to communicate with one another, ensure that they are on the same network segment. NOTE If you want all Unify DBIntegrator servers to communicate with one another, ensure that the Unify DBIntegrator Services port number they all use is the same. By default, Unify DBIntegrator Services communicates using registered port See Changing Port Numbers in Chapter 2: Configuring the Unify DBIntegrator Server of Using Unify DBIntegrator for details. 3. Ensure that your DBMS is properly installed. Your Unify DataServer database must be installed on the same server as Unify DBIntegrator. The driver does not support remote database access. Before You Begin 11

4. Install Unify DBIntegrator on the server. See Installing Unify DBIntegrator for Windows NT on page 20 or Chapter 1: Installing Unify DBIntegrator on a Unify DataServer NT Server for details. 5. (Optional) If you have no system data sources on your server, we recommend you use DBIntegratorAdmin to configure at least one for testing purposes. See Configuring Data Sources on Unify DataServer NT Servers on page 24 for an overview of data source configuration. 6. For testing purposes, configure and install Unify DBIntegrator Client on a single client computer. Ensure that this client connects to a Unify DBIntegrator server and that the client can see any data sources that they have been given the ability to see. NOTE If you have removed the default association between the <All Users> and <All Data Sources> group, your client will see only those data sources you have specified. If you have no system data sources on the server and you created one in step 5, this client should be able to see it. If you are not successful in connecting or seeing data sources, consult Chapter 5: Troubleshooting of Using Unify DBIntegrator. 7. (Optional) Configure the Unify DBIntegrator Client disk for distribution. See Configuring Data Sources on Unify DataServer NT Servers on page 24 for details of configurable options. 8. Distribute Unify DBIntegrator Client to end users. 9. Install the appropriate version of Unify DBIntegrator Client for the client computers operating system. 12 Installing and Configuring Unify DBIntegrator

Unify DBIntegrator Default Settings Installing Unify DBIntegrator on a Unify DataServer NT Server For general information about installing Unify DBIntegrator, read Before You Begin. If you have any difficulties during installation, refer to Installing Unify DBIntegrator on a Unify DataServer NT Server in Troubleshooting. This section provides procedures for installing Unify DBIntegrator on a Windows NT Server. Unify DBIntegrator Default Settings When you install and first run Unify DBIntegrator, the <All Users> list in Unify DBIntegrator Admin is empty. When Unify DBIntegrator Client users first update their data sources, their client user ids (Windows login ids) and TCP/IP addresses are added to the <All Users> list. This provides an easy way to fill the <All Users> list. NOTE If one or more Windows login ids cannot be determined, Unknown appears as the user id in the <All Users> list along with the TCP/IP address of the unknown client. As you configure Unify DBIntegrator data sources with Unify DBIntegrator Admin, they automatically become members of a base data group named <All Data Sources>. When you install Unify DBIntegrator, users in the <All Users> group see all the data groups in the <All Data Sources> group. Therefore, all users can see all data sources. Installing Unify DBIntegrator on a Unify DataServer NT Server 17

NOTE Database security resides with the DBMS. With Unify DBIntegrator, you manage relationships between data sources and users to provide data source visibility, not security. For example, a user could be granted the ability to see a data source through Unify DBIntegrator Admin, but may not be able to access data because of limitations imposed by the DBMS-specific security. 18 Installation and Configuration Guide

Unify DBIntegrator Default Settings By default, Unify DBIntegrator is installed with the following settings. 31 Chapter 2: Installing Unify DBIntegrator Client

Installing Unify DBIntegrator Client There are two methods of installing Unify DBIntegrator Client. Choose the method that is most convenient for you and your users. From disk Users can install the Unify DBIntegrator Client Setup on their own computers or the system administrator can install it for them. Make copies of the Unify DBIntegrator Client Setup disk to distribute to your users or use the same disk for every installation. See Installing Unify DBIntegrator Client from Disk on page 43 for more details. From the network The contents of the Unify DBIntegrator Client Setup can be copied to a network directory accessible to end users. Choose this option to avoid the need to duplicate or control disks. Users can then perform the procedure described in Installing Unify DBIntegrator Client from a Network on page 49. You can download Unify DBIntegrator Client for JDBC on demand to browsers for use by Java applets. For more information, see Using Unify DBIntegrator Client for JDBC (Unify DBIntegratorJDBC.html) which is installed with Unify DBIntegrator Client for JDBC. Customizing Unify DBIntegrator Client Unify DBIntegrator can be installed without any client configuration; you can also customize the Unify DBIntegrator Client installation program before you distribute it to your end-users. By default, the Unify DBIntegrator Client installation is interactive; that is, users install and configure their own software on their own machines, whether from a network location or from disk. You can, however, Installing Unify DBIntrgator Client 33

customize the installation to be non-interactive, so users simply run Setup and are not required to provide any further input during installation. NOTE You can customize the Unify DBIntegrator Client installation disks before you make them available to end users. Customizable features include: specifying a non-interactive install; adding Unify DBIntegrator Servers to contact for DSN update; changing the Unify DBIntegrator Manager port number; changing the Unify DBIntegrator Client DSN update period; specifying on Windows 95 or NT clients that data sources be system, not user, data sources. See Configuring the Unify DBIntegrator Client Installation on page 37 for details. Additionally, you can customize the Unify DBIntegrator Client default settings prior to installation so that there will be no interruption to end users after the software is installed. You can change the default installation directory, Unify DBIntegrator Server list, Unify DBIntegrator Manager port number, and DSN update period, among other defaults. For details about customizing Unify DBIntegrator Client, consult Configuring the Unify DBIntegrator Client Installation on page 37. Before You Install Unify DBIntegrator Client Before you distribute the Unify DBIntegrator Client disk(s) to users, we recommend you check that the following system requirements have been met. If you have any problems with your installation, refer to Chapter 4: Troubleshooting. 34 Installation and Configuration Guide

NOTE The client and server may not be ready to handle data access until these recommended steps have been taken. This checklist includes suggestions for minimizing disruption to end users. Installing Unify DBIntrgator Client 35

Recommended server configuration: Unify DBIntegrator must be installed and running on at least one server. TCP/IP networking option must be installed and running. Configure at least one system data source using Unify DBIntegrator Admin to test with Unify DBIntegrator Client after installation. See Configuring Data Sources on Unify DataServer NT Servers in Installing Unify DBIntegrator on a Unify DataServer NT Server. An application on the server can connect to the DBMS using the configured system data source. Create user groups and data groups. See Chapter 3: Administering Unify DBIntegrator in Using Unify DBIntegrator for details. Grant data source visibility to users or user groups, if you want to change the default settings. By default, all data sources are visible to all users. See Chapter 3: Administering Unify DBIntegrator in Using Unify DBIntegrator for details. Recommended client configuration: TCP/IP networking option must be installed and running. Ensure the default settings are appropriate for your network environment. See Configuring the Unify DBIntegrator Client Installation on page 37 for details. The client can communicate with the server across the network. 36 Installation and Configuration Guide

Configuring the Unify DBIntegrator Client Installation After you ve installed Unify DBIntegrator on the server, we suggest you install Unify DBIntegrator Client on one computer to determine if the default settings are appropriate for your environment. Once you have evaluated the default Unify DBIntegrator Client settings, you can change them on the master disk before users install Unify DBIntegrator Client on their computers. By default, Unify DBIntegrator Client is installed with the following network settings. Figure 1: Default custom.ini File To configure Unify DBIntegrator Client before distributing to users: 1. Insert Unify DBIntegrator Client Setup Disk 1 in a floppy drive. Installing Unify DBIntrgator Client 37

2. Locate the file custom.ini. 3. Open the file in a text editor such as Notepad. or At the DOS prompt, type edit a:\custom.ini 4. Edit the following settings, as appropriate: Interactive=1 Change this value to 0 to specify a non-interactive installation. Users run setup.exe (from the network or from disk) and are not prompted for user input. IMPORTANT During a non-interactive installation, a file called silent.log is placed into the installation directory on the client machine. This details any errors that occur during the installation. If the installation is successful, silent.log contains the following information: Unify DBIntegrator Client has been successfully installed. If the installation encounters any errors, they are written to silent.log. We recommend you review the file, or have users send you a copy, to determine whether the installation is successful. Default Directory=Unify\Client32 To change the Unify DBIntegrator Client default installation path, edit the default directory setting in this file. Specify the new path and directory for the Unify DBIntegrator Client software on the client machine. SvcPort=1599 When broadcasting a request for data sources, Unify DBIntegrator Client sends a request to all servers on this port number. It must match the Unify DBIntegrator Services port number on the server(s) from which clients receive data source information. 38 Installation and Configuration Guide

IMPORTANT We strongly recommend that you do not change this number. SvcEnableBroadcasting=0 Unify DBIntegrator Client can obtain new data sources with the Unify DBIntegrator server in two ways: Communicate with the first available server from a list of Unify DBIntegrator Servers. This list is compiled at the end of installation and whenever a client performs a manual update. If automatic data source updating is enabled, the list is also compiled whenever a client makes a connection to a data source. If the first server is not available, Unify DBIntegrator Client attempts to communicate with the next Unify DBIntegrator Server on the list, and so on, until it connects successfully. If no servers on the list are available, and if broadcasting is enabled(svcenablebroadcasting=1), Unify DBIntegrator Client then broadcasts to all servers. Communicate directly to a single specified Unify DBIntegrator Server to receive information on all Unify DBIntegrator Servers that the target server can communicate with (SvcEnableBroadcasting=0). To direct your client computers messages to a single Unify DBIntegrator Server, leave SvcEnableBroadcasting=0 and specify the TCP/IP address or the host name (specified in the client s hosts file) of the Unify DBIntegrator Server you want to direct requests to in the SvcServer= line (described below). For example, if you added the TCP/IP address to the SvcServer= line in the sample file Default custom.ini File on page 37, data source requests would be directed to the Unify DBIntegrator Server with this address. Installing Unify DBIntrgator Client 39

SvcServer= This refers to the Unify DBIntegrator Server you direct Unify DBIntegrator Client data source requests to if you have disabled broadcasting (as described above). TIP If you are connecting to a Unify DBIntegrator Server that is a multihomed host (i.e. it has more than one network interface), specify the IP address of the network interface you want your clients to connect through. You can do this in Unify DBIntegrator Control. In this line, specify the TCP/IP address or the host name (specified in the client s hosts file) of the Unify DBIntegrator Server you want to direct requests to. For example, if you added the TCP/IP address to the SvcServer= line in the sample file Default custom.ini File on page 37, data source requests would be directed to the Unify DBIntegrator Server with this address. SvcClntTimeOut=10 This refers to the number of seconds Unify DBIntegrator Client will wait for a server to respond to a broadcast message (or a direct-to-server message) before reporting an error. You can enter any value between 1 and 999 seconds. SvcSystemDSN=0 By default, Unify DBIntegrator Client runs under a user account. This means that data source information on Windows 95 and Windows NT clients is stored under the user s account and is accessible only to that user. Data source information is visible to whoever has logged on to the machine and updated data sources. However, you may want to use Unify DBIntegrator Client and Unify DBIntegrator with applications such as Information Server (web server software) that run under a system account to access 40 Installation and Configuration Guide

data in remote databases. In this case, the software will only look for data source information in the system account. You can change the default setting so that data source information is stored under the system account and will be available to your web server application. Edit the SvcSystemDSN=0 value to 1 to make this change. SvcDirect=0 This setting tells the client to communicate with a single specified server to get data source updates. The target server is specified in the SvcServer entry. To use a single server for data source updates, change this entry to 1. To use the server list, leave this entry at the default 0. For more information, see SvcServer= on page 40. UpdateAlways=1 Set this to 1 if you want the client to refresh its list of data sources at every connection. If it is set to 0, the client will only update at the interval defined in UpdateEveryXHourSec. SvcSrvPort=1583 The Unify DBIntegrator Manager port setting on the Unify DBIntegrator Client disk must match the Unify DBIntegrator Manager port on the server(s) from which clients receive data source information. To change this number, enter an unassigned port number that matches the Unify DBIntegrator Server(s) you want this client to receive data source information from. NOTE We strongly recommend that you do not change the SvcSrvPort number. It is registered for Unify DBIntegrator Manager s exclusive use with the Information Sciences Institute. Installing Unify DBIntrgator Client 41

UpdateEveryXHourSec=3600 The frequency of data source updates is controlled by this setting. Change it to set the number of seconds between updates. ClientHTTPPorts=80 Firewall tunneling is enabled if the port on which the client is trying to connect matches any of the ports in this setting. Normally, the HTTP port on a firewall is port 80. If there are additional ports, or if port 80 is not the HTTP port on your firewall, then you must change this setting. ClientInitPro=chttp.dll Initial protocols are loaded according to this setting. Alter this list to affect which protocols are enabled at startup time. Firewall tunneling is enabled by default. ServerList= If SvcDirect is 0, Unify DBIntegrator Client obtains data sources from a list of servers compiled at the end of installation and whenever a manual update is performed. For more information, see SvcEnableBroadcasting=0 on page 39. EnableAutoUpdate=0 The EnableAutoUpdate setting determines the manner of server list updates. If set to 1, updates are performed automatically. Setting this flag to 0 infers manual updates by the user. KeepAlivePeriod=30 In order to keep TCP/IP connections alive through firewalls, Unify DBIntegrator Client periodically sends a meaningless packet to the server. This period is defined, in seconds, by the KeepAlivePeriod setting. 5. Save your changes and close the custom.ini file. Unify DBIntegrator Client is now installed with the new default settings you have supplied. 42 Installation and Configuration Guide

TIP See Chapter 4: Using Unify DBIntegrator Client in Using Unify DBIntegrator for information about changing these settings after Unify DBIntegrator Client has been installed. Review the selections you have made. If you want to make any changes, select Back to return to the dialog box which contains the settings you want to change. Make the changes, then select Next to return to this dialog box. 12. Select Install. A progress meter and dialog box will appear on your screen to advise you of the progress of the installation. When all the files have been copied to your installation directory, Setup checks for the following system prerequisites: TCP/IP Unify DBIntegrator is installed and running on at least one server. A Unify DBIntegrator data source is configured on the server. Setup tries to connect to Unify DBIntegrator. If it cannot, it still completes the install but does not update data sources. 46 Installation and Configuration Guide

If Setup successfully locates all the system requirements, the installation is complete. Unify DBIntegrator Client is now ready to use! The following dialog box appears NOTE If you receive any messages advising you of problems, consult Installing Unify DBIntegrator on a Unify DataServer NT Server on page 64 in Chapter 4: Troubleshooting at the end of this manual. 13. Select Finish to exit Setup. A Unify DBIntegrator Client for Windows 95/98 or Windows NT folder containing a Unify DBIntegrator Client help and the Update Data Sources icon will be created under Programs in your Start menu. TIP To uninstall Unify DBIntegrator Client on Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, use the Add/Remove Programs utility, available in your Control Panel. Installing Unify DBIntrgator Client 47

14. If you had any applications open when you installed Unify DBIntegrator Client, you may need to restart your computer before you use Unify DBIntegrator Client. Select Yes to automatically restart your computer. Select No to do so at a later time. For detailed information about working with Unify DBIntegrator Client, see Chapter 4: Using Unify DBIntegrator Client in Using Unify DBIntegrator. 48 Installation and Configuration Guide
