3 1. INTRODUCTION With the introduction of Ethernet communication on the SQ6 range of ECU s a new software sweat of DescproW and EOT have been released to accommodate this feature. This document explains the set up of the PC Network card for the TCP/IP protocol to ensure that reliable communications with the ECU can be made and kept. It should be noted to achieve Ethernet communications with the SQ6 range of ECU a static IP address will be needed. These changes could affect communications with existing network connections, which normally obtain IP address automatically. If both communications with a network and an ECU are required it is possible to install another network card for communications with the ECU, whilst leaving the existing card to communicate with your network. You should contact you IT department of IT supplier for more information if you are unsure of your existing set up. It is important to take care when changing network settings to document all existing set ups before making any changes so that you can return to a known setting if you have any issues with communication with existing or new networks. It should be noted that on some PC s firewalls and secure software packages can affect Ethernet connections. It is also import that you have administrator rights to your PC s as the new software will need to make changes to your registry during set up. If you do not have these rights the software may not install correctly. It is Possible to have 1 copy of DescproW, 1 Copy of Full EOT and 5 copies of EOT running in monitor mode connected to one ECU. 4 2. INSTALLING SOFTWARE 2.1 DescproW Current version as of 10/07/2008: 3.0 Build 40 Before installing you new copy of DescproW, the old copy must be removed from the PC. This can be done from the Add or Remove Programs feature found in the control panel of windows. Once this has been done the software can be installed as in previous builds. The default installation location is C:\Desc\ Developer Name \. It is advised that this location is used. Note if you have more than one Hard Drive connected to your machine then the installation program will check for the drive with the most space and use this as the default location. It is advise if you use portable drives with you Machine these should be disconnected whist installing the software EOT Build Current version as of 10/07/2008: 1.11 Build 55 Before installing you new copy of EOT the old copy must be removed from the PC. This can be done from the Add or Remove Programs feature found in the control panel of windows. Once this has been done the software can be installed as in previous builds. 5 3. CONFIGURING THE PC To allow Ethernet communications the network card on the PC must be configure with a Static IP address. To access the network card settings open the control Panel in windows and double click on the Network Connection settings. This will open the Network Connections window. Right click on the Network adaptor that you will be using for communications with ECU. In the Example above there is only one network adaptor installed. Next click on the Properties Tab. This will open the Local area Connection Properties window. Scroll down in the main box until you come to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Either double click on this or highlight and click on Properties on the lower right side of the window. Pectel Control Systems Technical Bulletin Page 5 Of 10

6 This will open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window. When you first open this window it will be more than likely that the Obtain an IP address automatically is checked. This is normally the case for most network connections. Check the USE the following IP address box. Then enter the IP address. This should be as follows XXX the last 3 numbers can be left up to the user, but we suggest you start at 129. It should be noted that if more than one PC is to be connected to the same ECU the last 3 digits of the IP address should be different on each PC. Note it is good practice to do this Then enter the Subnet mask of Once this has been completed each of the windows can be closed. This completes the set up of the network card. Should you wish to revert to you original set up just repeat the process and rest the TCP/IP properties. 7 4. CONFIGURING THE TOOLS Descprow When you start DescproW you will see a new splash screen as below. Click on the Ethernet box and then ensure that the IP address for the ECU is All ECU s have this address. If it is different then change the correct setting. DescproW can the connect to the ECU in the normal fashion by clicking the On-Line button EOT When you start EOT you will see a the connections Splash screen as below It is possible now to connect EOT in two modes. The first is the full EOT mode in which the logging configuration, downloading and Real Time Monitor can be used. The second is the Real Time Monitor mode only. This mode can be set by checking the Monitor only box. The Monitor only mode is used if you have 2 PC s already connected with DescproW and full EOT mode already or both of these programs running on one PC. The Ethernet connection can be used in the Default Connection Mode or in Manual Connection Mode. In the Default mode the IP address for the ECU is When in Manual mode the IP address can be set by the user by clicking on the Advanced button. Once these setting have been completed click OK to connect to the ECU. You can change these settings at any time by clicking on the Connection pull down menu on the main EOT screen and click on Properties Pectel Control Systems Technical Bulletin Page 7 Of 10

8 4.2 Troubleshooting Once the DescproW and EOT have been loaded, it is possible that you may not be able to communicate with the ECU via the Ethernet connection. Listed below are some basic checks to confirm communication links between PC and ECU. Ensure ECU is powered up whilst trying to communicate. Check wiring continuity between Communications connector and the ECU. Check wiring continuity between the Communications lead and the PC. Check software communications using the ping command. Check Windows Firewall settings. If windows Firewall is not being used check settings on third party settings or check with your IT department / supplier Checking for Communication Connection With the ECU powered up and the communication cable connected to the ECU and PC, a windows command called ping can be run to confirm you Ethernet connection is ok. To run the ping command you will need to open a Dos window. If you are conversant with PC usage there are several ways to do this. If not follow the simple steps below. Go to the Start menu in windows and click on the Run menu icon. This will then display the Run window. Type cmd in the Open box and click on the OK button. This will open a Dos window. With the dos window open type in ping and press the return key. This will the check your connection to the ECU. This should not take longer than a few seconds. 9 If all is ok you will receive a report as displayed here. If you receive a report where some of the packets are lost then there is either a hardware problem or a software program on your PC is trying to use the same resources Windows Firewall Configuration Another Possible cause of not being able to communicate with the ECU is conflicts with the Firewall. This section outlines how to configure Windows Firewall to all the Pectel Tools to tunnel through the Firewall without causing other protection issues. If you have a third party Firewall program i.e. McAffee, AVG, Sofos, Norton, you should contact your IT department or software supplier for further information. To access Windows Firewall go to the Start Menu and click on the control Panel Icon. Then click on the Security Centre Icon. This will take you to the Security Centre window. Click on the Windows Firewall Icon to access the firewall controls. Pectel Control Systems Technical Bulletin Page 9 Of 10

10 There are several options here. The Windows Firewall can be turned off, but this is not recommended as this could open your PC to virus attack. It is recommended that the Firewall is set to On. Ensure that the Don t allow exceptions is NOT checked. Next click on the Exceptions Tab. Click on the Add Program icon. Choose the DESCProW icon and click on the OK button. This will then be added to the exceptions list. It is now possible to exit the Windows Firewall program and check again for coms.
