2 Chapter 1 Overview MSC.ROBUST DESIGN MSC.Robust Design is a software tool used to include uncertainty in the inputs to MSC.Nastran finite element models (FEM) and subsequently perform stochastic simulation. REQUIRED HARDWARE & SOFTWARE CONFIGURATIONS HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS MSC.Robust Design runs on Windows NT, 2000 and XP operating systems on a personal computer (PC). SOFWARE REQUIREMENTS A MSC.Nastran installation is a prerequisite for installing MSC.Robust Design. The MSC.Nastran installation must be either: A Windows version of MSC.Nastran on the PC on which MSC.Robust Design is being installed, or On any machine that the PC is networked to using MSC.Patran Analysis Manager. FLEXlm licensing software is also needed for MSC.Robust Design. All MSC.Nastran users will have FLEXlm software already installed. MSC.Patran Analysis Manager 2004 must be installed on the same PC as MSC.Robust Design to be able to distribute MSC.Nastran runs spawned by MSC.Robust Design to other computers in a network. The other computers in the network must have MSC.Nastran installed. The operating systems on the networked computers may be Linux/Unix/ or Windows. Chapter 2 Installation UPDATE FLEXLM LICENSE The first step is to install the FLEXlm license for MSC.Robust Design in the PC by updating the existing FLEXlm file with the new file. This file is generally received in an from the MSC Sales Administrator after the software has been purchased. FLEXlm will have been previously installed as it is used for MSC.Nastran. STAND-ALONE PERSONAL COMPUTER Next, the MSC.Robust Design installation files can be downloaded to the PC off of the MSC Internet site or executed from a Compact Disk. The download of MSC.Robust Design from the MSC Internet will provide a.zip file that will be un-zipped. It will generate the following file structure on the PC:

3 Filename Size (bytes) autorun.inf 40 demo32.dbd and.exe files 757, MSC.FLEXlm server files 3,713, MSC.Robust Design files 12,206,390 setup.exe and.ini files 127,334 These files also reside on a MSC.Robust Design CD. Double clicking on the setup.exe file (either on the PC in the location where the download was stored or from a CD) will open the following interactive installation window. Clicking on MSC.Robust Design in the interactive installation window starts the install shield, which opens the following window.

4 Follow the instructions provided in the interactive Window to install MSC.Robust Design on the PC. You must accept the End-User License Agreement to complete the setup. The installation wizard provides a default location for installing the MSC.Robust Design directory or lets the user choose where to install it. The user is prompted for the locations of: The MSC.Nastran installation location (path) Note that this is only the file name for the Nastran location; the /bin/nastran.exe is automatically appended to the defined/selected path. The FLEXlm license The installation wizard enables the user to browse their files to find these locations. INSTALLATION CHECKING MSC.Robust Design should be opened and a small problem executed with a small number of MSC.Nastran runs to ensure that the MSC.Robust Design-MSC.Nastran connection has been made. If the user can set up the problem in MSC.Robust Design and gets an error when a simulation is started, then it is likely that the wrong location was selected for the MSC.Nastran installation file or FLEXlm license. NETWORKED PERSONAL COMPUTER MSC.Patran Analysis Manager Installation MSC.Patran Analysis Manager 2004 must be installed. The following is a brief overview of the process for installing and configuring the MSC.Patran Analysis Manager for a typical, standard installation, assuming it has been unloaded properly from the CD-ROM. Refer to the MSC.Patran Analysis Manager Installation Guide for additional installation details. 1. Change the Log On account of the services. This step is optional, but highly recommended. Under the Start menu select Settings / Control Panel / Administrative

5 Tools / Services. Find the MSCRmtMgr or MSCQueMgr services and right-click on it and select Properties. Then select the Log On tab. Turn ON the This account toggle and then enter the non-administrator account and passwords that will manage the configuration files. Do this for both services. You will have to reboot the machine for this to take effect. 2. Install MSC.Analysis Manager on all of the machines in the network that will run MSC.Nastran jobs. If some of these machines are Unix or Linux machines, see MSC.Analysis Manager Unix/Linux Setup below. Install and start the Remote Manager service on each of the machines for proper communication. 3. The PC that has MSC.Robust Design installed will act as the Master Host. Install and start a Queue Manager service on this system, which will schedule analysis jobs. 4. Configure the Analysis Manager. Login to the Master Host machine and execute the Analysis Manager. <inst>/patrannn/bin/p3analysis_mgr When the interface appears, double click on the Administrative tree tab. You may get a message saying that no configuration files exist. Ignore this! Enter an Administrator account name. 5. Choose Applications and add MSC.Nastran as the application definition. 6. Choose Physical Hosts to define the machines that will run analyses ( Analysis Hosts ). 7. Choose AM Hosts to define the application paths on the physical hosts. Note that each physical host may have multiple AM Host definitions (if so, select the definition for MSC.Nastran). 8. Choose Disk Space. Click on each AM Host definition under this tree tab. The defaults are c:\tmp. Change them if you need to. The analyses are run in these directories. 9. Save the configuration files under Queue / Save Config Settings. 10. Stop and start the Queue Manager ( Queue / Stop/Start Quemgr ). 11. Test the configuration by selecting Administration in the tree tab and pressing the Test Configuration button. If all the tests passed, the Analysis Manager should now be able to run successfully from MSC.Robust Design. MSC.Analysis Manager Unix/Linux Setup Login and start a Remote Manager on all machines in the network that will run MSC.Nastran analyses. This requires installation on each machine using MSCSETUP. The Remote Manager

6 daemon must be run on all Analysis Hosts for proper communication. This daemon should not be run as root! <inst>/patrannn/bin/rmtmgr path <inst>/patrannn MSC.Robust Design Installation 1. Follow the steps for installing MSC.Robust Design on a Stand-Alone Personal Computer detailed above. 2. Start MSC.Robust Design. Enter Tools / Options / Preferences to get to the window shown below. Click on Use MSC.Analysis Manager for MSC.Nastran connection. 3. Test the system by running a stochastic simulation in MSC.Robust Design with a small number of MSC.Nastran runs being conducted on the different machines in the network through MSC.Analysis Manager.
