How to connect to FVCC's WiFi Document location: Also available as connecting.pdf. $Revision: 7141 $ $Date: :9: (Fri, 06 Oct 2017) $ In order to connect to FVCC's wireless network, you will need your FVCC Logon ID (aka. your username) and your FVCC Logon password. If you don't know your FVCC Logon ID and password, please bring a photo ID to MIS. Don't panic! This document is long, but you only need to read the section for the type of device you're trying to use to connect to the network. If you're familiar with wireless networks, the information in the "Summary" section is probably sufficient; if not, go to the Table of Contents below and find the section that matches your device's operating system. Summary SSID: FVCCNET ("FVCCNET" must be in UPPERCASE, and must NOT include any other letters, punctuation, or symbols.) Security: WPA2-Enterprise Encryption: AES or CCMP or AES(CCMP) Authentication method: Protected EAP using MSCHAP v2 CA certificate: Do Not Validate Identity/Username/Logon ID: your FVCC logon id, e.g. first name + middle initial + last name Anonymous Identity: (leave this field blank) Password: your FVCC network password (note caveat below - this is NOT your portal password!) Some computers will also prompt for "Domain"; if yours does, leave this field blank. Caveats / Troubleshooting Removing a wifi profile

If you're having trouble connecting to a wifi network, you can sometimes fix the problem by removing and re-adding that profile. Follow the instructions below to remove the network, then connect to it as a 'new' network. Android Go to Settings, then Wi-Fi. Scroll down to the network you want to remove. Long-press the network name, then select Forget network. For more info see Android 101: How to 'forget' a Wifi network Android Central. iphone Go to Settings, then Wi-Fi. Scroll down to the network you want to remove. Tap the blue arrow button next to the name to show the details for the network. Tap the Forget this Network button at the top. For more info see Tell Your iphone to Forget a Wireless Network Macinstruct. Windows 7 Right-click the Network icon in the task tray, then select Open Network and Sharing Center. Go to the Tasks pane and select Manage wireless networks. Find the network you want to forget, rightclick the network name, then select Remove network. You'll get a dialog box asking if you're sure you want to delete the network; tap the OK button to do so. For more info see Delete a network connection in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows 8 Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the task tray. Find the network on the list, right-click it, and select forget this network. Windows 10 Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the task tray. At the bottom of the list of connections click on Network settings. Under the list of Wifi networks, click on Manage Wi-Fi settings. This will show a "Manage known networks" header followed by your network profiles. Find the network on the list, click it, then click the Forget button. For more info see How to manage wireless network connections in Windows 10 Windows Central. Other troubleshooting notes Students have an account on the FVCC Portal and on the local FVCC network. Both are set up with the same password, but are not otherwise linked - changing one password does NOT change the other. Passwords are case sensitive! Account lockouts apply to wireless connections too - put in a bad password, your account will be locked out for several minutes. Under Windows, the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) service must be running. If

it can't start, you will never be prompted for a username/password to connect to FVCCNET. If it's not running and you see "Error 105: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely manner." or a similar error when trying to start it, you may need to apply or finish applying an update for the service. Try rebooting and/or running Windows Update. Network SSIDs are case sensitive! Use FVCCNET, all upper case. Variations like "FVCCnet", "fvcc.net", "fvccnet ", etc., will NOT work. If you're explaining it over the phone, try "Tap Caps Lock, then Frank Victor Charlie Charlie Nancy Edward Tom". If your device says that it's connecting but doesn't get an IP address and/or doesn't allow you to access the Internet, try turning wifi off and back on. If all else fails, make sure your wireless network adapter is turned on. By default, MS-Windows Guest accounts do not have access to secured Wifi networks. If you use Guest as your working account, or if you don't see a network icon in the system tray, you may not be able to connect to FVCCNET. Try creating another local user account with Standard permissions. Check your date and time settings - if your computer's clock is too far off of the current time, you will not be able to connect. 5 The following steps assume you're using the built-in wireless network management under Windows 7; if you're using a different network manager (e.g. one that came with your computer or wireless NIC), please consult the documentation for said software. Tap the Start button to bring up the menu. Open Control Panel. On the Control Panel, go to Network and Internet; below this, select View network status and tasks or Network and Sharing Center. Select Manage wireless networks. Select Add. Choose Manually create a network profile. Enter FVCCNET as the Network name. Use only uppercase letters. Select WPA2-Enterprise as the security type. Select AES as the encryption type. Tap the Next button. You should be told "Successfully added FVCCNET"; now, tap the Change connection settings option. On the FVCCNET Wireless Network Properties dialog, go to the Choose a network authentication method list and pick Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP). Tap the Settings button. Uncheck the Validate server certificate checkbox. Under Select Authentication Method, select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2). Tap the Configure button. On the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialog, UNcheck "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)". Failure to do this will cause Windows to try to send your local machine name and user name when connecting, which almost certainly will not work. Tap Ok twice to go back to the Security tab for FVCCNET Wireless Network Properties. Tap the Advanced Settings button. Check the Specify authentication mode checkbox, then select User authentication from the list. Note that you can use the save credentials button to save your username and password; doing so may be more convenient but increases the risk that someone could get the password from your computer. Also, if your password expires and you change it on the LAN, you'll need to update it in the FVCCNET wireless network

profile too. When the network connects and Windows asks what type of network, pick Public. (The other choices will make your computer do extra work scanning the network for shared resources; this normally isn't dangerous, but it will waste processor time and battery life.) Windows 8 On the list of networks, select FVCCNET. Tap the CONNECT button. Enter your username and password. When you see "Windows can't verify the server's identity." tap the Connect button. Wait while Windows reports "Verifying and connecting."; next you should see "FVCCNET Connected" on the list of networks. Right-click on FVCCNET and select View Connection Properties. On the FVCCNET Wireless Network Properties, you should be on the Security tab. Find and uncheck the box for "Remember my credentials for this connection...". Windows 8.1 and 10 If the above instructions do not work, you may have to manually add the FVCCNET network profile. The workaround is to manually create the network profile, setting it to use WPA2-Enterprise, then use the command line to fix the profile. Right-click the network bars icon in the lower right corner and select open Network and Sharing Center. Choose Set up a new connection or network. Choose Manually connect to a wireless network. Enter FVCCNET as the Network name. Use only uppercase letters. Select WPA2-Enterprise as the security type. Close the dialog boxes. Click the network bars icon again, and try connecting to FVCCNET. Enter your username and password and proceed as shown above for Windows 8. In one case we've seen Windows 8.1 not accept the username/password for the network unless it's pre-entered via Control Panel > Wi-Fi > View status of this connection > Wireless Properties >

Security > Advanced settings > Save Credentials (or Replace credentials). Other Windows 8.1 gotchas Windows 8.1: WiFi dropping and/or "Limited" Specific to Intel 7260 Wireless on many brands of laptop - fixes range from turning off specific features to using an external network dongle to reverting to Windows 7. Windows 8 may not be able to connect to some Cisco routers So far we have not seen this particular issue, but it may happen again. iphone/ipad Go to Settings, then select Wi-Fi. Turn Wi-Fi on if need be. Select FVCCNET from the list of networks. Enter your username and password. Tap Join. After a moment, you should be shown a "Certificate" message, saying that AUTH#.fvcc.fvcc.edu (# could be a 5 or any other number) is Not Verified. Tap the Accept button. After a moment you should be connected to FVCCNET. Mac Pick FVCCNET from the list of networks. Enter your username and password. When prompted to update your certificate list (to add FVCC's server certificate), you must use your personal password (i.e. the one you use to make administrative changes to your computer). Android phones and tablets Go to Settings. Go to Wireless & networks. Go to Wi-Fi settings.

Select FVCCNET from the list of networks. Set the EAP method to PEAP. Set Phase 2 authentication to MSCHAPV2. This is not optional - fail to set this and you won't be able to connect. For Android 7 (Nougat): Set CA Certificate to Do not validate. You will get a warning message "No certificate specified. Your connection will not be private."; you can ignore this message. In the Identity field, enter your username. Skip the Anonymous ID field. In the Password field, enter your password. (Yes, this is a risk - anyone with access to your phone/tablet may be able to retrieve your password.) Note: There have been reports of Android devices corrupting network profiles; when this happens, the device keeps trying and failing to connect to FVCCNET. Removing ('forgetting') the profile and re-entering it seems to fix the problem. WARNING: Most versions of Android won't save the Phase 2 authentication setting; if you modify your FVCCNET profile, you will probably have to manually pick MSCHAPV2 every time you modify the profile. Chromebook Pick FVCCNET from the list of wireless networks to open the "Join Wi-Fi network" dialog. Enter the following: SSID: FVCCNET (changeable if you're manually joining a network; otherwise not editable.) EAP method: PEAP Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPv2 Server CA certificate: Do not verify User certificate: leave as None installed Identity/Username/Logon ID: your FVCC logon id, e.g. first name + middle initial + last name Password: your FVCC network password (note caveat above - this is NOT your portal password!) Anonymous Identity: (leave this field blank) Amazon Kindle Older versions do not directly support WPA2-Enterprise. There are unverified reports that it is possible to jailbreak older Kindles and create scripts to manually join WPA-Enterprise networks ; try at your own risk. For newer versions, follow the directions for Android, above.

Unix/Linux Depends on which supplicant/network connection manager you're using. wpa_supplicant Tested under FreeBSD; should work for other BSD/Linux/Unix systems that use wpa_supplicant(8). Add the following block to /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf: network={ ssid="fvccnet" key_mgmt=wpa-eap eap=peap phase2="auth=mschapv2" identity="{username}" password="{password}" } Instead of storing the password in the above file, you can use wpa_cli(8) to supply the password on demand. Ubuntu/Mint/etc. using Network Manager Edit /etc/networkmanager/system-connections/fvccnet and remove the line system-ca-certs=true. Raspberry Pi If you're using the Config GUI, select CCMP as the encryption protocol. Windows XP Unfortunately, many network cards and/or drivers from the WinXP era do not play well with WPA/WPA2 networks; connecting may require experimentation, patience, and/or cursing, or it may not be possible with your hardware. Make sure you have Service Pack loaded! (SP2 with WPA updates supposedly will do the trick, but SP is a good idea anyway.) The exact interface depends on the software you're using to manage wireless network connections; refer to the summary at the top of this document and the help pages or other documentation for your computer. See Windows XP WPA2-Enterprise using IEEE 802.1X jermsmit.com for one step by step guide that may help. Windows XP does not have a built-in way to scrub saved WPA credentials - see How to remove

cached user credentials that are used for PEAP authentication in Windows XP. Qooq cooking tablet As of December 201, the QOOQ tablet does not support WPA2-Enterprise. Given that the underlying OS is Linux, it might be possible to root the tablet and manually connect using wpa_supplicant etc.; given the risks (including bricking the device), we can not recommend the attempt.
