The tablet can serve as an effective substitute for standing in front of a whiteboard. I tested both a small-size Intuos Pen and Touch and a medium-size Intuos Pro and found that the smaller size is easier to use in that it requires less arm motion and is more portable. I also found that the additional features of the Pro model do not warrant the additional cost when only using the tablet as a substitute for writing on a whiteboard. The "Intuos Pen and Touch" tablet has two sensors, providing both pen and multi-finger touch input. I do not recommend the "Intuos Pen" tablet as its pen does not have a built in eraser. NOTE: Bamboo tablets have been rebranded as "Intuos" and Intuos tablets have been rebranded as "Intuos Pro". If the tablet is merely being used to present hand written notes and diagrams to the classroom, I found that GIMP provides a less cluttered and larger workspace than Adobe Photoshop Elements (APE is a free download with the purchase of a Wacom tablet). If an instructor would rather not use GIMP, there are alternative choices available for basic screen annotation such as ZoomIt and Epic Pen, as well as tools built into Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Table of Contents / Introduction TOC 1 / 26 Gnall
Hardware Recommendations Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch Small i01?ie=utf8&psc=1 CaseCrown Faux Suede Zip Sleeve Case Two pockets: a large pocket for the tablet and a small pocket for cables. 02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 USB Extension Cable - A-Male to A-Female - 6 Feet The proprietary USB cable provided with the Wacom tablet is only 3 feet long. Female/dp/B001MSU1FS/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid= &sr=1-2&keywords=6+feet+usb+extension+cable Wacom Wireless Accessory Kit i00?ie=utf8&psc=1 USB Extension Cable - A-Male to A-Female - 6 Inch To save wear-and-tear on the wireless receiver connector, plug the receiver into this short extension cable, and then plug the cable into the computer. 3 Hardware Drivers and Graphics Software Wacom Drivers Drivers for the Intuos Pen & Touch tablet can be installed from either the provided CDROM or from the following webpage. Download the drivers for "Intuos" and not "Bamboo, "Intuos Pro" or "Cintiq". GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program Wacom tablets come with a free licensed download of Adobe Photoshop Elements, but I found GIMP to be better suited for provided a relatively uncluttered work space. Photoshop has too many toolbars which can't be closed. Also, Photoshop does not allow one to turn off pressure sensitivity for pen and eraser input. Drivers & Software TOC 3 / 26 Gnall
Settings - Windows 7 (8 is similar) (tablet must be connected to access these settings) Pen Delay Disabling the Windows "Press and Hold" setting eliminates the pen response delay when drawing with the Wacom pen. Start Control Panel Pen and Touch Pen Options tab Press and hold Settings Uncheck "Enable press and hold for right-clicking" I prefer to disable the pen buttons as I tend to accidentally click them. Settings - Windows TOC 4 / 26 Gnall
Accidental Flicks Disable flicks to prevent accidental events. Settings - Windows TOC 5 / 26 Gnall
Settings - Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch Wacom tablet properties can be set globally and for specific applications. Global Settings Start Wacom Tablet Wacom Tablet Properties See page 8 ExpressKeys settings: Point the Open/Run command to: C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\gimp-2.8.exe Uncheck "Show Express View" Select 20 minutes for "Switch to power saving mode:" Settings - Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch TOC 6 / 26 Gnall
GIMP Settings To add GIMP to the application list, start GIMP and click the + button. This only needs to be done once. ExpressKeys settings: Use the following Keystroke sequences: New, Window Maximize ALT-f n ALT-o WINDOWS KEY- OR ALT-f n ALT-o Zoom 100% ALT-v z 1 Clear ALT-e e Settings - Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch TOC 7 / 26 Gnall
NOTE: The Wacom ExpressKey settings for GIMP shown on the previous page allow a new GIMP image to be created once GIMP has been started. A new image can also be created from the GIMP menu as shown on page 17 of this document. ExpressKey Display After using an ExpressKey, a display may pop-up on the Windows desktop. Since this display usually just gets in the way, the display can be kept hidden by unchecking Show Express View. Do for both All Other and GIMP. Settings - Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch TOC 8 / 26 Gnall
Pen Settings For those who write and erase with a light touch, set the Tip Feel and Eraser Feel settings to Soft for both "All Other" and GIMP. To eliminate inadvertent pen button clicks, disable the two pen buttons. Do for both All Other and GIMP. Settings - Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch TOC 9 / 26 Gnall

Settings - GIMP Pen Eraser NOTE: In order for GIMP to recognize the Wacom pen eraser, GIMP must be started with the Wacom device (pen or express key) rather than the mouse. The following changes also need to be made so that GIMP will recognize the physical Wacom pen eraser. Edit Menu Preferences Input Devices Configure Extended Input Devices Set all three modes to "Screen": Core Pointer WACOM Tablet Eraser WACOM Tablet Pressure Stylus Settings - GIMP TOC 12 / 26 Gnall
Default Image Size Edit Menu Preferences Default Image A width of 20,000 allows one to write continuously without having to create multiple images. The height value depends on the resolution of the computer monitor. The following recommended height settings should create a canvas which will fill the full screen height (with the Windows taskbar displayed, hiding the taskbar provides an additional ~30 pixels of vertical height). Two values are given: with and with-out rulers displayed. (See the next page for ruler settings.) 15 Maximum New Image Size Edit Menu Preferences Environment Depending on how large the default image size was set to (see previous pages), the amount of memory allocated to the image may need to be increased from the default value of 128 MB. The number of processors to use depends on how cores your CPU has and whether it supports hyperthreading. Settings - GIMP TOC 15 / 26 Gnall
Zoom & Resize Image Behavior New images usually open with a default zoom level of less than 100%. The zoom level can be manually reset to 100% via either the GIMP view menu or via a Wacom tablet ExpressKey: GIMP: View Menu Zoom Wacom Tablet ExpressKey: In the "Wacom Settings for GIMP" section of this document, the second ExpressKey should be configured to set the zoom level to 100% GIMP can be configured to automatically open an image at 100% zoom level. With the 1:1 setting selected, the GIMP window will be automatically sized to accommodate a new image at 100% zoom level: Settings - GIMP TOC 16 / 26 Gnall
Space Bar Gimp has three "While space bar is pressed" settings: No action Pan view Switch to Move Tool To avoid accidentally moving the image when using the keyboard in combination with the tablet pen, it is best to use the "No action" setting. Settings - GIMP TOC 17 / 26 Gnall
Create a new blank canvas Using the Wacom ExpressKeys is usually the fastest way to create a new blank drawing canvas (see page 7 of this document). A new canvas can be also be created directly from the GIMP menu bar: File Menu New A width of 20,000 allows one to write continuously without having to create multiple images. The height value depends on the screen resolution of the computer monitor. For the instructor stations in C131/C139, a height of 905 will provide a canvas which fills the screen (assuming rulers are hidden). For a laptop connected via VGA, a height of 650 works well. OK View Zoom 100% Maximize the GIMP window Settings - GIMP TOC 18 / 26 Gnall

Uncheck "Brush", "Dynamics", "Pattern" and "Gradient" so that various tools can have individualized settings. Settings - GIMP TOC 20 / 26 Gnall
Tool Radius, Pressure Sensitivity and Line Smoothness Double-click for tool options. Hardness value of 100 gives a solid line with sharp edges. A radius of 1, 1.5 or 2 works best for drawing tools. Dynamics controls pressure sensitivity. Smooth stroke provides anti-aliasing, but creates a gap between the cursor and the drawn line. Various radii can be saved for the Eraser tool (and other tools). Settings - GIMP TOC 21 / 26 Gnall

Exporting GIMP Files as Image Files GIMP.xcf files can be exported to other file formats (.gif,.png, ) which can then be read by programs other than GIMP. Begin by cropping the image and removing extraneous white space: Image Menu Autocrop Image Exporting Image Files TOC 23 / 26 Gnall
To export the image as a GIF file: File Menu Export As Select File Type (By Extension) Select the file type Enter a file name Export Export Exporting Image Files TOC 24 / 26 Gnall
Merging GIMP Files To add the contents of one GIMP file to another, one should crop the second image before adding it to the first image. Consider two GIMP files: Crop the image in the second file: Image Menu Autocrop Image Copy the cropped image (CTRL-C) and paste it into the first image (CTRL-V): Select the positioning or cropping tool: Re-position the pasted image. After re-positioning, click outside the pasted image to deselect it. Merging GIMP Image Files TOC 25 / 26 Gnall
Annotation Software ZoomIt Easy to access via keyboard shortcuts and allows one to quickly annotate whatever is displayed on the desktop, but freezes windows in place. Epic Pen Graphic/Graphic-Others/Epic-Pen.shtml Similar to ZoomIt, allows one to quickly annotate whatever is displayed on the desktop. More flexible than ZoomIt in that is allows selective erasing and the desktop to be manipulated without erasing the annotations.
