1 Slide 1 E-Notebook 2014 PerkinElmer Overview These slides provide a quick introduction to the PerkinElmer E-notebook 2014 software as installed at KU Leuven.

2 Slide 7 PerkinElmer E-Notebook Windows software On-premise installation Oracle database Windows, Linux, Unix Oracle and CS Oracle Cartridge Windows Client Windows Application Server Windows 2008 R2 or 2012 Standard Edition Windows 7, SP1, Professional and Enterprise, Windows 8.1 Professional E-Notebook Client Software ChemDraw ActiveX control The PerkinElmer software is installed on KU Leuven premises. The data is stored in an oracle database. The client software is Windows-only; the software hads to be installed on each computer connecting to the application server.

The software specifications have to be followed! It is important to set Acrobat (Reader) as the default PDF-viewer, failing to do so may influence the rendering of PDF s or the printing of the documents.

4 Slide 9 Modules Chemistry module o Chemdraw built-in Biology module Offline working is possible The Basic E-notebook 2014 version was installed, together with the Chemistry and Biology modules. An advantage of having a client version installed, is the possibility to work offline. When disconnected from the KU Leuven network, limited data entry is still possible. When connected back to the network, the changes will be synchronized.

5 Slide 10 Client installation Push the software Installation of the client software is very easy: go to the website and click on the links to install the different parts. The ChemDraw module has to be installed first Recent computers have already the correct.net environment, a message will warn you that the installation is in fact not needed. Launch the application will start the installation. Remark: Re-installing the software will not harm your data, remove the software from the installed programs list and redo the installation.

6 Slide 12 Concept Groups Level 1 Users Notebooks Experiments/ Collections Sections Level 2 Fields Prop erties This drawing represents the concept that is implemented in the E-notebook 2014 software: The structure is based on Research Groups and those Groups have Users. A User can create Notebooks and a Notebook can contain Experiments. An Experiment can contain several pieces of information (Sections), i.e. PDF, Word document, images, The sections can have more detailed information i.e. a chemical reaction. For that reaction, several fields with information can be filled out (think of reaction conditions, etc. ). Values for each of those properties can be noted,

7 Slide 13 Dashboard/home Open experiments, Click and navigate Open experiments of other users (Witness) Own experiments awaiting some action The concept in translated into the software: The home screen provides a dashboard with all the personal information. The main part shows all the open experiments. If colleagues asked you to perform an action this is also listed; as well as all the tasks that ou submitted to your colleagues. On the left hand side all the Notebooks are listed, clicking on a Notebook will expand it and make all the experiments visible. Clicking on an experiment in the LHS, will put all the information on that experiment on the RHS of the window. On the lower left part of the window, the Audit Trail is shown: it provides information on all the actions that were taken.

Adding documents can be done by drag-and-drop. Or by selecting the option from the Menu bar. Point-and-click to select the desired information

9 Slide 15 Experiment Types Basic Experiment Chemistry Biology 3 different experiment types are available by default. 1, Basic Experiment This experiment type has no specific information on chemistry or biology. It can be used to collect all types of documents and links. 2, Chemistry Experiment 3 different chemistry experiments are available to enter the information. 3, Biology Experiment 3 different biology experiments are available. The core part of the experiment allows to add documents: - Office documents - Text - Images - PDF

11 Slide 28 Important boundaries Per experiment: max. 12 MB o is stored in DB o Performance issues SDM: o Supplementary Data Management: way to store large data files o Max. 500 MB 12 MB is the allowed limit per experiment. This limit is set by the software vendor, making it larger can induce performance issues. SDM: Supplementary Data Management Is a shortcut to add larger files to an experiment. The files are stored on a storage system outside the database, but the access is managed by the E-notebook software. A link to the file on SDM is stored in the database.
