GxP compliance requirements When you install Empower software for the first time, or when you uninstall it, you must qualify the software so that it meets GxP compliance requirements. Recommendation: Whenever you install or uninstall software in a GxP environment, follow your organization s management-approved, standard operating procedures for changing software. Page 2 of 18

3 Before you install Empower 3 FR 1 software Back up all Empower projects, library information, and databases before installing this software. You can install Empower 3 FR1 software as a new installation or as an upgrade. Install it as a new installation that includes Empower 3 base software and Empower Service Release 1 (SR1) software. Restriction: Chromatography data software (CDS) must not be installed on the system. Install it as an upgrade, from Empower 3 SR 1 software. Restriction: Empower 3 SR1 software must be installed. Before you install Empower 3 Feature Release 1, confirm that you do so using the Empower 3 Feature Release 1 software media part number , Rev. B Empower 3 Feature Release 1 documentation Empower 3 Feature Release 1 includes the base Empower 3 documentation CD. The following documentation was revised for Feature Release 1 and will be available on the Waters Support Website: Empower 3 Installation, Configuration, and Upgrade Guide Empower 3 System Administrator s Guide The Empower 3 multi-language documentation CD will be revised to include these updated documents, and will be available approximately 30 days post-release. New features in this release Empower 3 FR 1 software includes the following new features. Oracle installation The Oracle version patch set 11 is installed on 64-bit or 32-bit operating systems. Oracle Solaris support The Oracle Solaris 10 database server is supported. Dual-tower support Dual-tower injection capability for the Agilent 7890A GC using ICS is supported, beginning with version 2.5. Restriction: The Empower Software architecture does not support both dual-tower GC injections and the "Inject Ahead" capability of the Agilent 7890 GC at this time. Because Empower 3 FR1 now supports dual tower injections, it no longer supports the "Inject Ahead" capability of the 7890 GC auto sampler. (PCS 48774) Toolkit is web-enabled You can now use Empower Toolkit from a web server. The project context was removed from its global position within the Empower Toolkit, enabling the Toolkit developer to build web applications. A new ToolkitContext object represents a specific project context (User, Project, and so on), which creates all Page 3 of 18

4 Toolkit objects that a user normally instantiates for all viewers. This change is internal to Toolkit, so Toolkit developers will not perceive a difference in Toolkit functionality. Empower SystemsQT for Software Empower SystemsQT for Software replaces the former ConnectionsAQT for Empower 3 and ConnectionsAQT for Empower 3 MVM. This new version is available only with Empower 3 Feature Release 1. Empower SystemsQT for Software includes the ability to electronically sign off both the Installation Qualification (IQ) and Operational Qualification (OQ) results, and save the PDF reports to the database. Activating the Empower SystemsQT for Software license option provides the following new functionality: A new Software Qualification report group in Report Publisher is used to report IQ and OQ information for one or all nodes. This report group also generates two types of verify files reports: A summary report or a detailed list of all the files. Two new tabs in the Node properties dialog box enable you to enter the following information: Use the IQ Info tab to enter installation configuration details that were previously handwritten on printed reports. Use the IQ/OQ tab to enter the date when the IQ/OQ was performed and its pass/fail status, which you can then report and sign off electronically. The Backup form, Maintenance form, and Maintenance procedure are no longer printed with each OQ result set. They are available as PDF documents on the Empower SystemsQT for Software DVD. The Empower projects Valid_OQ1, Valid_OQApex, and Valid_OQMVM include new electronic sign off reports. The report names end with the letters RS to signify electronic sign off. By default, all projects now include a new result named PQ Unk 1. This result enables you to preview, review, and approve the IQ report before proceeding with the OQ, in accordance with the relevant customer standard operating procedure. See also: Document rC, for an explanation of how to run the new Empower SQT protocol. Issues fixed in this release The following table shows software problems corrected in FR1. The PCS (product change system) numbers identify software issues that Waters personnel monitor within a system change request tracking tool. PCS number Previously, the third page of the System Object Export Utility wizard presented a truncated version of the phrase Database Alias. The page now includes the entire phrase Previously, the Configure ICS for 64 bit OS utility produced an incorrect installation log entry. Now it produces the correct entry Previously, the calculation of average response values was inaccurate when you used a response-factor fit and averaging by level. The calculation is now accurate Previously, when you resized the QuickStart window, the Applied Table Preferences toolbar's placement did not automatically change. Now the resized window displays a toolbar that is automatically and appropriately placed Previously, you could not restore a project hierarchy when these conditions applied: The projects were backed up to a root. 5 PCS number The project directory was the first item, alphabetically, in the root. No other project hierarchies were backed up to the root. You can now restore a project hierarchy when these conditions occur Previously, you needed to enter the password for the Oracle user Sys", before running the system export object utility from a client. You no longer need do so Freshly installed, Empower 3 FR1 now includes default users, in default user groups. When upgrading from Empower 3 Base software, however, you must manually add default users Previously, the Chinese translation of peak type of "Missing" failed to match that used in Empower 2 Feature Release 5. The discrepancy is resolved The Chinese translation for "Lower Error Limit (LCL)" is changed to match that in Empower 2 Feature Release The Show Me button no longer appears in the Empower QuickStart user interface Previously, when you installed Empower 3 FR1 software silently without supplying a network location for the installation log, an error message appeared stating "No Network Path Found". The message no longer appears as an error message; it appears as a warning message The keyboard shortcut CTRL+R fails to provide functionality when used in the Project Window's Fractions view. Use Ctrl+I to show the Fractions view Previously, the Empower 3 installer would not work with some localized operating systems because of a missing group called Users. The installer now works as it should Previously, saving a report via Preview affected PDF Generator settings. That behavior is corrected Previously, after you saved a PDF report once, the scaling changed. That behavior is corrected The PDF report functionality is corrected so that the orientation of the report method is used properly when generating PDF reports Previously, problems occurred in Review when you attempted to add legends to a chromatogram. Although Empower 2 FR2 included the capability to add the legends, information for some legends (such as Sample Set or Result Set fields) was not available in Review. Additionally, though you could apply various peak, calibration, calibration curve, and library fields as labels, the information specified in those fields was unavailable in Review. The following changes correct the problem in Review and in the Review part of the QuickStart user interface: When legends are turned on for the zeroed-baseline plot, they are not automatically turned on for the 2D-chromatogram plot. The following legend fields are now available for 2D-chromatogram and zeroed-baseline plots: Sample Set, Sample, Injection, Chromatogram, Result, and Result Set. (Result Set fields is not available when a channel is associated with a sub-result, such as a viscometer result.) The following legend fields are now available for the control plot: Sample Set, Sample, Injection, and Chromatogram. The following legend fields are now available for the Chromatogram Result table: Sample Set and Result Set. The Sample Set legend field is now available for various subresult Page 5 of 18

On the Legend tab, the checkbox Display Legend on Screen is now visible and useable for Chromatogram, Zeroed Baseline, and Contour plots Previously, when reprocessing a result set using existing integration failed to produce results when you followed the prescribed procedure. An error message also appeared in the message center stating that you cannot reprocess the result set without a processing method. Now you can do so only when reprocessing the result set using the existing integration. This error only occurred when you followed this procedure: 1. Select a sample set that includes no processing method in its method set and a clear cal in first line. 2. Background process the sample set using a processing method. Result: ProcSrvr generates a result set and results. 3. Review the result set, and manually integrate a result. 4. Save the modified result. 5. Reprocess the result set, and select Use Existing Integration. Result: Procsrvr generates a new result set that includes no results Previously, when working on an Empower 3 client, if you failed to define the TNS_ADMIN environment variable, errors would appear in the Verify Files utility. That behavior is corrected Previously, the Japanese translation of "Injection", on the General property page of the Alliance 2790/95 instrument method, was incorrect. The translation is now correct Previously, Review crashed when you added or subtracted spectra. That behavior is corrected The Empower 3 FR1 Deployment Manager now searches for an ICS in the push removal and quits if it finds one. An appropriate message appears in the Empower log The label for the button Changed Oracle Password is now Changed Database Password and it appears in localized languages Previously, the list of items shown in the Configuration Manager window failed to reload and refresh automatically when you clicked Update. It now does so Previously, the database update message, If you do not have the password contained a spelling error. The error is corrected Previously, when a project in a hierarchy of projects was open, and you attempted to set a project lock on the project hierarchy, the open project all its subprojects, and all projects and their subprojects below the open project would remain unlocked. Now, after you change the project lock state, a warning dialog box appears, and the tree view and the project table show the lock state for the project hierarchy You can now export data from projects to which a process-only lock applies provided your user type allows the Export Data privilege. The user and usertype information in the application toolbar shows a process-only lock Previously, installing Empower 3 on Citrix XenApp 5.0 on Windows Server 2003 displayed a message stating that the operating system is not supported. The operating system is now supported, and the message no longer appears. Page 6 of 18

7 PCS number To push install Waters 2420 software, Waters 2465 software, and Waters 2475 software using the PsExec utility, disable the User Access Control (UAC) in Windows 7 systems On a Japanese platform, a translation has been corrected. Entries in the DHCP XML files are no longer deleted Previously, when starting a new QuickStart window from an existing QuickStart window, the user type did not change, as it should have done. The errant behavior is corrected , Previously, the sampling rate stored for a channel was sometimes modified when x-axis units were missing and no time information was associated with the points in a data file. Thus, the area count for reintegrated peaks was lower compared with the original integration in Empower, build 1154, which calculated a larger area count than expected. Now, when a channel's raw data file includes unspecified x-axis units, the software assumes the units are minutes. The channel's sampling rate remains unmodified unless it is 0, and no time information is associated with the points in a data file. When the sampling rate is modified, the resultant integration of the original channel continues to show lower area counts than did the original integration in Empower, build , 47499, Previously, the # of Results Stored for a 3D-channel exceeded the number of results present. Now, in the Project window or QuickStart user interface, the # of Results Stored field displays an accurate value. Similarly, the Result# value failed to increase incrementally for PDA, GPCV, or MS results. Now, for those results, the Result # field in the Project window or QuickStart interface displays an accurate value , The About box now displays the option names shown: 1. A1100 Support is now Agilent LC Control 2. GC is now GC Control 3. ConnectionsAQT for Empower 3 is now Empower SQT for Software 4. ConnectionsAQT for Empower 3 MVM is now Empower SQT for Software MVM 47959, Users granted the appropriate privilege can now sign off on results in projects with a process-only Lock , 47295, The following Help buttons are now functional: Project Properties The Custom Field wizard New User window New Project wizard 48491, The Oracle Audit Trail feature is now disabled. When enabled in Empower 3, it created hundreds of thousands of XML files, causing excessive CPU utilization. Toolkit issues fixed in this release PCS Number Previously, AlterSample Object updates failed to appear in the database. The updates now appear A new FetchByTemplate() function, added to the Toolkit Sample Set Method object class, generates a new SampleSetMethod object using the provided Page 7 of 18

8 PCS Number sample set method template name Previously, when you opened and saved a SampleSetMethod object, the custom fields were not retrieved correctly. The custom fields were fetched with blank default values, so when you saved the method, the set values were overwritten with a blank value. The Toolkit now retrieves the correct custom field values during the fetch Previously, when you restored projects using Toolkit, they were not locked during the restoration process. Now, when you restore them, they are set to full-lock state. Following the restoration, the project reverts to its original locked state. This behavior mirrors Empower software's when it locks projects during the restoration process In the case of a web-enabled application, the Toolkit now suppresses the audit trail pop-up message boxes. As a result, Toolkit applications cannot bypass the system audit trail policy or a full-audit-trail (FAT) project policy without specifying an audit trail comment or reconfirming the user's login credentials The internal field, ScaletouV, now appears in the list of specially named fields, to ensure consistency with past Toolkit versions Previously, if you declared a new instance of the SampleSetMethod object and performed a Fetch() function, Toolkit would set the open method as "MarkedForEdit". When you performed a subsequent Fetch() function, with a different name for the same SampleSetMethod object, the first Sample Set Method was not set to "UnmarkedForEdit". Therefore, if you were updating multiple Sample Set Methods with the same object, all but the last method remained MarkedForEdit in Empower software. This issue is resolved. A FetchForReadOnly() function was added to the SampleSetMethod object that allows you to fetch a method without locking the method for edit. An UnLock() function was added for all method objects so that a Toolkit developer can remove the MarkForEdit property for any locked methods Previously, when creating new user that requires a password without setting a user type, the Toolkit generated the following message box after the first logon: In LoadMilProject() using DEFAULT usertype. Tell JM The message now reads as follows: "User: X is using a DEFAULT user type, where X is the user name Previously, you were not able to edit the Name property on a COM Instrument Setup. Now, using the Toolkit application, you can create new COM InstrumentMethod objects, provided the Name and XML property values are properly set using the application Previously, when late binding an Instrument Setup using create new object and supplying the 2690 Prog ID, you would receive a 2790 Instrument Setup instead of the This issue is resolved When using the Empower Toolkit ProcessingRequest object, the Toolkit checked for the Save Results privilege, not the Export results privilege. This has been resolved An additional login method has been added to the TkProject class. This method accepts a usertype parameter and was required for Visual Basic compatibility. Page 8 of 18

9 Known issues in this release The following table contains a list of the known software issues and workarounds for Empower 3 FR1. The PCS (product change system) numbers identify software issues that Waters personnel monitor within a system change request tracking tool. PCS Number During installation, on the End-User License agreement page, the Chinese translation of the last sentence is incomplete. The statement reads: Waters may amend current terms and conditions shall apply to all Software delivered to Licensee after any such amendment from time to time. The then current terms and conditions shall apply to all Software delivered to Licensee after any such amendment. The translation of this statement omits the words The then When using a Chinese operating system, the Deployment Manager launcher encounters three scenarios, and the messages for them appear in English: Scenario 1: The operating system is not adequate such as Windows 2000 Scenario 2: Try to launch on Empower 2 32 Scenario 3: Try to launch on Millennium In silent mode, if the network path for the log file to be copied is not specified or accessible, the warning message appears in English as well During server installation the following error message appears: Enterprise manager configuration failed due to the following error Error uploading configuration data to the repository. Clicking OK in the error-message dialog box permits the installation to continue. Recommendation: Add the server name to the hosts file When running a system object export utility from an Empower 3 client, a blank dialog box occasionally appears When SDMS Sign off is enabled, and you want to print an Empower result into SDMS for signoff, you cannot do so from a Citrix client. Workaround: You must use a Windows XP 32-bit non-citrix Client to print the Empower result The OracleJobScheduler service is disabled by default; however it is present in Empower3 base and SR1. This service is removed when upgrading to FR1. It is still present in full installations of FR To acquire 2420 channels on a Windows 7 64-bit system, you must install version 1.40 of the ELSD driver. Do not install the older W driver Connections INSIGHT is installed by push installation even though the service not included in the ICS list text file. Connections INSIGHT is included in the driver pack, and it is installed by default When using the Windows 7 operating system, an Application Not Responding message can appear. This is not unique to Empower software. Allow time for the application to run to completion and 5890 GCs run well separately but cannot be combined on the same Avocent serial hub When you use WATEXP.exe to export a system object from Empower 2 Service Pack H, and you select a location in which to store the exported object, a resultant message states the required size as 0Kb=B. Although the stated file size is incorrect, the exporting process is successful. Page 9 of 18

10 PCS Number Do not change Empower SQT project names when using the Empower SQT wizard. If you change the project name after a project is restored from the DVD, results will not be generated when you use the wizard When ICS drivers are installed using push/silent mode, Connections INSIGHT is installed automatically, regardless of whether it is listed in the text file. In order to uninstall ICSs using push/silent mode installation, the text file must include Connections INSIGHT as an entry in the list The Software Qualification Report Verify Files Information Field displays the date and time the last IQ was run, not the current date and time To successfully acquire data with the 7890 GC with ICS V2.6, you must use firmware version A If database communications are lost during Empower operations, applications can behave incorrectly even after database communications are restarted. Recommendation: To restore proper operation, log out of all Empower applications and restart If you are running an HPLC system with modules 2535, 2707, and 2998, and additional instruments are added, the system displays an "Instrument Failure" message Using a Chinese operating system, even after you uninstall ICS drivers and Empower, the Empower and ICS shortcuts persist. You must manually delete the Empower shortcut and each of the ICS shortcuts from the Empower program menu In Korean versions of the AQT reports, some MVM terms are inaccurately translated. They include the Korean terms for "Assessed Field" and "Intermediate Precision," which appear in the Report Publisher window, associated with the Validation Test Result and the Validation Test Data tables. Thus the Validation Protocol Methods section displays the inaccurate translations. Other instances in the MVM OQ result, however, display updated, accurate ones During the installation of Empower 3 FR1 on a Windows 2003 server, if the installation is terminated, a dialog box appears stating that you can choose to continue. If you choose to continue, the installation fails to do so, and the installation log records your choice Error messages appear when the Chinese version of Empower 3 FR1 is installed with three ICS modules: the e-sat/in TM module, 2489 UV/visible detector, and the 2998 PDA detector. When the e-sat/in module opens, its online Help is available for use. When you open the 2489 detector or the 2998 detector, however, their online Help fails. A message appears stating, Windows is looking for 2489.chm (or 2998.chm). A subsequent message states, W2489.chm (or 2998.chm) specified by that shortcut is already changed or moved The Method Validation Chemist user type can lock or unlock projects even though the Lock Projects and Unlock Projects privileges are enabled by default for this user type. The Alter Any Project privilege is also required for these privileges to work When attempting to remove Empower 3 FR1 before ICS modules from the Add/Remove program function, the following incorrectly formatted message appears: The Empower 3 Deployment Manager has found an installation of Waters Instrument Component Software (ICS) option on this system. Please remove all ICS from this system before you may uninstall {0}. You may either Page 10 of 18

11 PCS Number uninstall the ICS from Add/Remove programs, or you may use the shortcut Remove Waters Instrument Component Software from Start->Programs- >Empower menu. No changes have been made to this computer; the Empower 3 Deployment Manager will now exit. Thank you If you installed Empower 3 FR1 as an upgrade to Empower 3 SR1, and you want to remove Empower 3 FR1, the system must have access to the Empower 3 FR1 media If you have the Headspace Control Option (HCO) installed, and then you uninstall all instrument drivers, the following message appears: Couldn t find Empower in HTML directory entry in registry., and you will be unable to uninstall the drivers. To avoid this message, you must uninstall the HCO while at least one other instrument driver is still installed If an upgrade is push installed on a computer on which the Empower product has not yet been installed, the install will fail but the log file message will indicate that an existing Empower 3 installation was found When you first open the AutomatedQA- TestExecute 8- a message box appears indicating that a newer version is available and asking whether you want to update to the newer version. In the message box, click No, and then select the check box Do not show this message again" to prevent the message box from reappearing After you push uninstall the Empower 3 FR1 software, an empty Empower folder can persist on the Windows Programs menu. If you want to manually delete the folder, you can do so. Alternatively, you can allow the folder to remain, for its presence on the menu does not pose a problem QuickStart exits abruptly if you switch to the Browse Project view from the Method Set view when an opened method set contains multiple processing methods and lists the second or a subsequent processing method multiple times. This behavior does not occur when a method set containing multiple processing methods lists the first processing method multiple times When you install the Agilent 6850 ICS on a CITRIX server using the deployment manger, the following error message appears: Error code-3. This is a known issue that affects older installers when multiple temp locations are defined on the server. Workaround: Install the ICS directly, and do not use the deployment manager When you restore a Millennium project, the value in the calibration curve equation field appears only in Review. The value is not saved in the database, therefore, is empty elsewhere in the software. The coefficient fields display the correct values. 32 When you restore a Millennium 3.0 project, and you cancel the process from the Select Time Zone dialog box before the project is fully updated to the current database version, error messages appear in the message center indicating the software's failed attempts to update the equation field When you restore one or more projects using the batch restore process, and your user account does not include the View Message Center for All Users privilege, if a message is sent to the message center during the restoration process, you will see messages in the message center for all users. Workaround: To view messages associated only with your user account, log out, and then log in. Page 11 of 18

12 PCS Number The following Help information appears only in English: While in the Instrument Method Editor, if you click Help > Instrument Method Help topics, the topic titled Working with the Instrument Method Editor appears in the right pane of the Help viewer. This Help topic contains this new information: Tip: For Help on setting instrument parameters for the selected instrument, press F When installing the Empower 3 instrument Driver Control Software DVD on a Chinese Empower 3 FR1 client on Windows XP SP3 machine, the message nv video hook driver 2 appears while installing ConnectionsINSIGHT. The message disappears automatically after few minutes and ConnectionsINSIGHT installs successfully without any issues When uninstalling Empower 3 Feature Release 1 from the system, the message Service could not be deleted may appear (Waters service appears in the message header). In the message box, click OK. The uninstall process continues normally. When it finishes, verify that the uninstall process removed Waters Service. Known toolkit issues in this release PCS Number Performing multiple AlterSample.Fetch() calls from a Toolkit application slows down Toolkit performance significantly. After 2-3 calls, a message appears stating that sample history space is running low. Recommendation: A Toolkit AlterSample object is created per project, which also creates multiple components per sample set line in memory. The AlterSample object destructor frees these resources, but it is not called by the native.net garbage collection. To force the.net framework to call the destructor on a nonmanaged object, use the Marshall.ReleaseComObject() call in the System.Runtime.InteropServices namespace. In addition, after calling ReleaseComObject() set the AlterSample object to null The Toolkit Archive object cannot be instantiated from a web service environment or from a standalone.dll library object. The Toolkit Archive object can be instantiated in a standalone.exe application. Program File Updates The following program files have changed for this release.
