1 R E L E A S E N O T E S Agilent 7890 GC Instrument Control Software Version 2.6 Version 2.6 of the instrument control software (ICS) for the Agilent 7890 GC addresses several issues, provides support for the G3520 Transfer Line Interface (TLI), and corrects a problem involving operation of the inlet under cryogenic conditions. These release notes explain how to install Agilent 7890 GC ICS v2.6 for Empower 2, Empower 3, and MassLynx software applications. This v2.6 release of the ICS supports both the Agilent 7890A and 7890B GC. 2 Tested firmware and software The versions of 7890 GC firmware tested with this release are A (7890A minimum) and B (7890B minimum). Later versions of firmware are expected to work; refer to the Agilent firmware notes for qualification information. This version of the ICS supports Empower 2 and Empower 3 software in English, Japanese, (Simplified) Chinese, and Korean. The following table lists the software configurations, feature releases, service packs, and operating systems that were tested with the 7890 GC ICS v2.6. For Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, and Windows 7 systems, Microsoft Visual C Redistributable is required and will be installed automatically if needed. The minimum requirements for Empower 2 and Empower 3 Software are FR5 and SR1, respectively. The computer configurations and operating systems the Waters ICS supports for the 7890 GC are listed at the end of this document. For details on supported service packs and incremental operating-system and hotfix support, see the Empower 2 and Empower 3 installation and configuration guides. 4 Installing the Agilent 7890 GC ICS Recommendation: Back up all Empower projects, library information, and databases before installing this software. The Agilent 7890 GC ICS v2.6 consists of these components: Deployment Manager To install or uninstall the 7890 GC ICS driver. Driver Needed for Empower software to communicate with the module. User interface Includes the instrument method editor and control panels in Empower Quick Start and Run Samples utility. Online Help for the 7890 GC Access online Help when working with an Agilent instrument method by clicking the question mark while using the instrument method editor. Note: No Oracle or system files are affected by installing version 2.6 of the Agilent 7890 GC ICS. The only files installed when the ICS is installed are those files that are required by the ICS. Requirements: Install Empower software or MassLynx software before installing the 7890 GC driver. Install the 7890 GC v2.6 ICS using only the Waters Deployment Manager which is packaged with the Agilent 7890 GC ICS v2.6 media. To use the ICS software on an Empower Enterprise (client/server) system, you must install it on every computer, LAC/E 32 module, client, and Citrix application server that interacts with the 7890 GC, its methods, or results. For consistency, install the same version of the ICS on all clients, LAC/E 32 modules, and Citrix application servers. You need not install the ICS software on the database server unless the server hosts the Empower client software and interacts with the GC instrument, its methods, or its results. Note: Push installation is now supported using PsExec for the 7890 GC ICS. General installation instructions using ICS media (not for a Citrix application server): 1. Power-off the 7890 GC, and reboot the computer. 2. Log in to the computer using an account with local administrator privilege. 3. Insert the Agilent 7890 GC ICS media in the media drive. 4. Browse to the root of the media, and double-click the setup.exe file to begin the installation using Waters Deployment Manager. 5. Follow all prompts, to finish the installation. 6. Reboot the computer. 7. Power-on the 7890 GC. Note: If previous versions of the 7890 GC ICS (such as 7890 v2.0, 7890 v2.01, or 7890 v2.5) are installed you can upgrade to 7890 GC ICS version 2.6 by following the instructions above. Page 4 of 12

5 General installation instructions using a downloaded executable file: 1. Power-off the 7890 GC, and reboot the computer. 2. Log in to the computer using an account with local administrator privileges. 3. Browse to the A7890_GC_v26.exe file (downloaded from Waters.com) on your local hard drive, and then double-click the file. 4. Click Unzip, to extract the installation files, browse to the extracted file location, and then double-click the setup.exe file, to begin the installation using Waters Deployment Manager. 5. Follow all prompts to finish the installation. 6. Reboot the computer. 7. Power-on the 7890 GC. Note: If previous versions of the 7890 GC ICS (such as 7890 v2.0, 7890 v2.01, or 7890 v2.5) are installed, you can upgrade to 7890 GC ICS version 2.6 by following the instructions above. To install the Agilent 7890 GC ICS on an Empower Citrix server: 1. Power-off the 7890 GC, and reboot the computer. 2. Log in to the computer using an account with local administrator privilege. 3. Insert the 7890 GC ICS media into the media drive. 4. Put the Citrix server in Install mode by opening a command prompt and typing Change user /install. Result: An advisory appears: User session is ready to install applications. 5. Browse to the root of the media, and double-click the setup.exe file to begin the installation using Waters Deployment Manager. 6. Put the Citrix server in Execute mode by opening a command prompt and typing Change user /execute. Result: An advisory appears: User session is ready to execute applications. Validation Information After you install or uninstall the Agilent 7890 GC ICS on a qualified system, Waters recommends determining your requalification needs in accordance with your laboratory s standard operating procedures. If this is an initial installation in a GxP-regulated environment, perform a full qualification of Empower software. Waters recommends that you run the Verify Files utility or the ConnectionsAQT for Empower IQ and review the resulting file for an entry that states No installation changes were detected. This ensures that the installation did not alter or otherwise affect existing files. Note: The date displayed when the Verify Files (IQ) runs always reflects the previous installation. See the Empower.log file for the complete history. Page 5 of 12

6 Verifying the Installation To verify the installation, select Start > All Programs > Empower > Empower Installation Log. Search for lines similar to this: ***************************************************************** Installed Waters 7890 Software on :10:11 ***************************************************************** The installation of any option or service pack is documented in the checksum.txt file on the Empower computer. This file indicates the installation of any option or (options) or service pack. The file also verifies the integrity of disk files by comparing their current cyclic redundancy check (CRC) and sizes with their original values. Those values were recorded during the installation of the base software and, if applicable, any installed option or service pack. This file is created when you run the Verify Files utility by selecting Start > Programs > Empower > Verify Files. To display the checksum.txt file, navigate to the \Empower\Script directory, and then double-click the checksum.txt file. Uninstalling the ICS for the Agilent 7890 module To ensure successful file verification following the removal of the ICS, you must reboot the computer before you uninstall the ICS. To remove any version of the Agilent 7890 GC ICS from your system: 1. Reboot the computer. 2. Log in to the computer using an account with local administrator privilege. 3. Open the Control Panel and double-click Add/Remove Programs. 4. At the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, click the Change or Remove Programs icon. 5. Click the version of Agilent 7890 GC ICS that is on your system, and then click the Change/Remove button. 6. Follow the prompts to remove the control software from your system. The registry and new CRC checksums are updated for the Empower installation. No Oracle or system files are affected. Issues fixed in this release Note: Waters uses product change system (PCS) numbers to track the status of issues. PCS Number Description Control is added for the G3520 Transfer Line Interface, used with Headspace analysis. Temperature is set using temperature zones Aux 1 or Aux GC ICS version 2.5 placed files, incorrectly, in the root directory of the computer. Files are placed in their correct location in version 2.6. 7 PCS Number Description Valve events for the 7890 GC were incorrectly recorded as 0 and 1 instead of On/Off. They are correctly recorded in version Removing the A7890 v2.01 or v2.5 driver produces extra entries in the dir.cks file, causing the Empower Verify Files utility to report a failure when any component included in the 7890 v2.5 checksum file is modified to a different version. This behavior is corrected in version 2.6. Instead of uninstalling v2.01 or 2.5, upgrade them to v Negative temperature settings are now available for components that allow negative temperature settings when cryo cooling is properly configured and enabled After installing A7890 v2.5, if any component included in the created checksum was updated, the Verify Files utility reported it as changed. Version 2.6 corrects this behavior The Sample Offset setting for the 7683 autosampler is now functional. Known issues in this release Note: Waters uses Product Change System (PCS) numbers to track the status of issues. PCS Number Description The signal zero event of the analog signal does not function as expected Using the Inject Ahead feature when analyzing a sample whose run time exceeds 10 minutes can cause an error that results in instrument failure. The Inject Ahead feature, which is not compatible with dual-tower injection capability in Empower software, is discontinued If you fail to enter the serial number in the Empower node properties on the DHCP tab, the instrument scans as no instead of yes. To prevent this problem, complete all of the fields in the table during installation, so Yes appears when you scan the instrument If you create a back injector instrument method and specify dual tower mode in Empower software, you must also enable the second data channel in the instrument method Even if the dual-tower check box is enabled, the dual-tower option might not appear, as expected, in the tool bar. Disabling and then re-enabling dual-tower mode (by clicking View > Toolbars > Dual Tower Mode, thus deselecting and reselecting it) causes the option to appear in the tool bar The online Help description of the tray chiller is inaccurate. The tray chiller interface does not control the heating or cooling of the vial tray. It merely determines whether a specified temperature is reached or is out of range If you set up a run and then disconnect the Ethernet cable while the system is operating, error message 39 states Client is not GC owner. You must then reboot the 7890 GC and the Empower node, to re-establish the connection When you uninstall the 7890 GC ICS from the MassLynx/Empower computer, and the ICS is the last one (or only one) to be uninstalled from the target computer, error message 1905 appears. The appearance of this message does not affect MassLynx/Empower functionality For data acquired before Empower 3 software was installed, use the Comprehensive Status report group to report the post run information stored with Page 7 of 12

8 PCS Number Description the channel. For data acquired by Empower 3 software, use the Post Run report group to report the post run information stored with the injection. An error message appears if you try to report pre-empower 3 data using the Post Run report group, or if you try to report Empower 3 (minimum) data using the Comprehensive Status report group. Empower Software cannot support both dual-tower GC injections and the "Inject Ahead" capability of the Agilent 7890 GC. With the support of dual-tower injection capability in Empower 2 SP H Hotfix 1 and Empower 3 FR1, support for the "Inject Ahead" capability of the 7890 GC autosampler has been discontinued In the Aux zone, when a temperature is specified and then the method is saved, the unit changes from degrees Celsius to psi. On changing the page and returning to the Auxiliary page, the unit reverts to degrees Celsius Valve box and Unknown can be controlled simultaneously by both Aux zones. The heating zones, like valve box etc., must be controlled by either Aux thermal 1 or Aux thermal In the instrument method, clicking outside an edit box that contains an out-ofrange value prompts the error message Out of Range.. This message is prompted only once, and you cannot save the method nor make changes in it until you correct the out-of-range entry When reporting an Empower 2 or Empower 3 instrument method for the Agilent 7890 GC, the fixed format of instrument method reporting can show "impossible" conditions, such as reporting a split-flow value for an inlet that does not support Split mode - the Purged Packed inlet, for example. This behavior does not affect the operation of the GC When using Push installation to install the 7890 GC ICS in an Empower 2 configuration, Empower 3 incorrectly appears as the name of the installation log file in. For example, the file MACHINE-7890E2_ _ PM_Empower3_ICS should be named MACHINE-7890E2_ _ PM_Empower2_ICS The Deployment Manager provided with the 7890 GC ICS v2.6 can be used only to install or upgrade from older versions of the 7890 GC ICS to version 2.6. Do not use the 7890 GC ICS v2.6 version of the Deployment Manager to install, upgrade, or remove any other ICS When using Add/Remove Programs to view the size of a program, the size of the 7890 v2.6 ICS is incorrectly reported. The 7890 v2.6 installer does not calculate program size. The discrepancy is a Windows installer issue In the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean method editor for the 7890 GC, when a few error messages are displayed, the title of the message boxes appear in English On occasion, when trying to connect the 7890 GC to a new computer, the following error message can appear in the Empower message center: "67: The unit is not in a valid state to execute an operation." On receiving this message, restart both the PC and the instrument. If the message continues to appear, contact Waters support. Page 8 of 12
