1 Configuring Commvault VirtualServer Protection to backup to Igneous Introduction Commvault Virtual Server Protection (VSP) is a third-party enterprise backup software suite, allowing companies to backup and restore data across a wide variety of platforms. Starting with VSP 11, you can use Commvault to back up data to an Igneous Hybrid Storage Cloud. For additional information on Commvault's capabilities, please refer to Commvault's documentation, some of which is linked to below: Commvault v11 Cloud Storage overview Commvault Cloud storage : getting started Pre-requisites Note that this was specifically tested with Commvault VirtualServerProtection v11 build 80, running on Windows Server 2012 x86_64 Other versions of Commvault may work, please refer to Commvault support to determine which software offerings are compatible with S3 storage. Igneous configuration In order for Commvault to be able to backup data to Igneous, there are a few things to do on the Igneous Hybrid Storage Cloud in your environment. If you have access to the Igneous management interface, follow the steps listed in the Quick Start Guide. If you do not have access to the Igneous Management interface, you will need to request the following from whomever administers your Igneous Hybrid Storage Cloud: endpoint URL access_key secret_key Container (bucket) Note that a best practice is to have a separate Container/Bucket for each Commvault Media server. Create & configure a cloud library 2. Define a Storage Policy 3. Define a BackupSet 4. Define a Subclient For additional tasks and advanced options, please refer to the Commvault Documentation. Setup a Cloud Library These steps are outlined in more detail in Commvault's Cloud Storage - getting started 1. Launch the Commvault VPS Admin console: 2. You will be prompted for your CommCell credentials, if you are unsure, consult with your Commvault administrator. Commvault igneous.io Page 2

3 1. You will be presented with an initial screen, click on the CommCell Browser sidebar to expand more options. 2. Within the CommCell browser sidebar, Click the + sign next to Storage Resources, then expand Libraries Commvault igneous.io Page 3

4 3. This will display any existing Libraries available. Right click on Libraries and choose Add - > Cloud Storage Library Commvault igneous.io Page 4

5 3. Fill in the appropriate fields on the resulting dialog box: o o o o o o o o Name : This can be any string. Type : Make sure to select Amazon S3 Media Agent: select the appropriate media agent for your environment. If you are unsure, consult your Commvault Administrator. Service Host : This will be the hostname portion of the Igneous endpoint URL. Be sure to only include the hostname (it defaults to port 443) Access Key ID : This will be the Igneous access_key obtained previously. Secret Access Key : This will be the Igneous secret_key obtained previously. Bucket : This will be the Igneous Container / Bucket obtained previously. Storage Class: leave this at Standard Commvault igneous.io Page 5

7 Assuming you did not receive any errors, you should be able to now see your Library added: If you like, you can also login to the Igneous system using a client such as Cyberduck. You can then browse into the CvContainer and see a hierarchy similar to this:. You can now proceed to the next section. Define a Storage Policy 1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Policies, then expand Storage Policies Commvault igneous.io Page 7

8 2. Right click on Storage Policies -> New Storage Policy Commvault igneous.io Page 8

9 3. Choose Data Protection and Archiving, and click <Next> Commvault igneous.io Page 9

10 4. Choose a name for this Storage Policy, leave the rest default, and click <Next> Commvault igneous.io Page 10

11 5. Choose a Library for the primary copy. This will be the same as the Library you created previously. Click <Next> Commvault igneous.io Page 11

12 6. Choose the Media Agent to use, if in doubt, consult your Commvault Administrator. Click <Next> Commvault igneous.io Page 12

13 7. Configure the # of streams and any aging rules. Note: you can defaults. Click <Next> 8. Choose whether you want Deduplication enabled. If you uncheck the Yes box, you can skip the next step. If you chose Yes, you will need to provide a Name and Location for the Deduplication Database. Choose a local Folder which has sufficient space, refer to Commvault Documentation for more details. 15 Define a Backup Set In this exercise we'll be creating a BackupSet for a single client computer. Note that in this case, our client computer happens to be the same host running the media server & VPS admin interface. This document does not cover adding or configuring additional client computers, please refer to Commvault Documentation if you wish to do this. 1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers Commvault igneous.io Page 15

16 2. Locate the Client Computer you wish to configure for backup, and click the + sign to expand. 3. Click the + sign next to File System to expand. Commvault igneous.io Page 16

17 4. There is already a backup set named defaultbackupset, however we want to create a new one. Right click Filesystem -> All Tasks -> Create New Backup Set 1. Give your Backup Set a name, and select the Storage Policy you created previously. Commvault igneous.io Page 17

18 5. Choose a Backup Schedule. In this case, we're choosing Do not Schedule. Click <OK> Commvault igneous.io Page 18

19 Define a Subclient 1. From the CommCell Browser, right click your newly created BackupSet -> All Tasks - > New Subclient Commvault igneous.io Page 19

20 2. On the General tab, choose a name. Then click the Content tab. 3. Here you can either manually Add Paths, or Browse for a folder. In this example we'll be chooing the c:\ drive. Commvault igneous.io Page 20

21 4. Click the Storage device tab. Choose the Storage Policy you created previously. You can explore other sub-tabs, however for now we'll leave at defaults. Click <OK> to save. Commvault igneous.io Page 21

22 You may be prompted to set a schedule, for this example, we are choosing Do Not Schedule Congrats, you finished all the configuration! Commvault igneous.io Page 22

23 Kicking off a job 1. From the CommCell Browser, left-click on your BackupSet, then minimize the CommCell Browser to allow you to view the subclients. 2. Right click on the Subclient you created previously, and choose Backup 3. For Select Backup Type, choose Full, Check the Immediate box, and press <OK>. Commvault igneous.io Page 23

24 4. Click the Job Controller button and choose Show All Jobs to bring up the Job controller window. You should see your job listed in status Running: Commvault igneous.io Page 24

25 Additionally, you can open up Cyberduck, and browse to see if new data has been placed. Important: do NOT modify or delete any files or folders visible here, as it will corrupt the backup Restoring 1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers Commvault igneous.io Page 25

26 2. Locate the Client Computer which you backed up previously, and click the + sign to expand. 3. Click the + sign next to File System to expand. Commvault igneous.io Page 26

27 5. Right-click on the BackupSet that you used previously -> All Tasks -> Browse and Restore Commvault igneous.io Page 27

28 6. From this point, you can click View Content to provide you with a Browser which will let you find the files you wish to restore from the backup. There are a number of options available to choose from, please refer to Commvault Documentation for full details. Commvault igneous.io Page 28

29 7. Restoring is simply a matter of navigating the Tree, checking the box next to the folders or files you wish to restore, and clicking the Recover All Selected button. 8. After confirming some options (take defaults for simplicity), the recovery job will be submitted. To view status, from the main toolbar, click : Job Controller -> Show all jobs Commvault igneous.io Page 29
