Welcome 1. WELCOME TO EyeLearn Eyelearn is a special education software developed by Irisbond in collaboration with a team of teachers and speech therapists. EyeLearn helps users to begin to control the computer with their eyes and begin achieving learning objectives set by a professional. These objectives are achieved by playing entertaining games adapted to the needs of children and adults with cognitive difficulties. With EyeLearn it is possible to add more games and apps to more fully meet the user s needs. The EyeLearn program is divided into four levels of learning, each with a specific objective. Each goal achieved will contribute to the user, at the end of the four levels, being able to use communication symbols, read and write. 3
Installation 2. INSTALLING THE EyeLearn SOFTWARE The software is compatible with computers and portable devices which have a Windows operating system (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10). 1 Insert the memory stick in one of the USB ports on your computer. Double click on the EyeLearn Setup file. For installation to be successful, you need to have administrator permissions. If your Windows user account does not have the necessary permission to install programs, a dialogue box will appear upon beginning installation prompting you to enter the administrator password for your computer/device. 2 Select the language you require for installation and click OK. 4
Installation 3 Read the information in the installation wizard and click Nex to continue with the installation. 4 Accept the terms of the license agreement by ticking the I Accept the terms of the license agreement box and then click Install. 5 A green bar will indicate the installation s progress. 6 When the process is almost complete, you will be asked if you want to install Bluestacks, a program 5
Installation which allows you to use mobile apps on your PC. Click Yes. 7 The system will launch the Bluestacks installation wizard. You must answer the questions which appear onscreen. 8 When the installation is complete, click Accept. 9 The installation wizard will ask you if you want to install more Bluestacks games. Click Yes and continue the installation. 10 Once installation is complete the system will ask you to confirm; click on Finish. 6
Learn with EyeLearn 3. LEARN WITH EyeLearn When the EyeLearn program opens, an easy-to-use start window will appear. This is the program s basic user mode. It consists of four levels which guide the user through a game-based gradual learning plan. EyeLearn uses the following icons: Exit EyeLearn Information Go back to the previous window Access abilities test Open the settings window. Close 7
Basic User Mode 4. BASIC USER MODE As mentioned in the previous section, the basic user mode consists of four levels: 4.1 LEVEL 1. Visual Stimulation In level 1 the user does not consciously interact with the eyetracker; instead he/she simply looks at the computer screen, and watches visually engaging images aimed to encourage eye movement as the user follows the figures moving across the screen. The user should interact with the screen three times a day for periods ranging between 5 and 15 minutes each. In level 1 we use the game EyeFocus (found in Recommended Games) which allows us to register the user s focus points and eye movement. We recommend starting with this game as it can be played without running a calibration process and can prepare the user to follow future exercises. The game consists of the three steps: 8
Basic User Mode Step 1: Positioning. A window will open with the image of two lenses. The user must ensure that their eyes fall within the area of these two lenses. It is important that onscreen instructions are followed at all times. Step 2: Watch the video. There are three different videos, but all have the same aim. Step 3: Video results. The system replays the video, illustrating the user s eye movements throughout. In addition to EyeFocus, you will also find other apps in level 1 which allow you to see where the user is looking at all times. To use these apps, you must ensure that the Irisbond eyetracker is connected to the computer through a USB port. Once you have positioned the eyetracker below the screen, complete the following steps to be able to analyze in more detail where the user is looking: 9
Basic User Mode 1. Open the Primma program 2. Make sure that the user appears in the window onscreen and that the border of the window is green. 3. Carry out a quick calibration by clicking on the RECT button. 4. Activate eye control by clicking the white mouse icon and when asked click Yes both times: the first time is to disable mouse control and the second is to keep the mouse cursor visible. 10
Basic User Mode After doing this, a smiley face will appear onscreen showing where the user is looking at all times. This feature can be used with level 1 apps as well as with any other digital stimulus, such as images that the user recognizes, symbol grids or even videos that motivate them, for example YouTube videos. 4.2 LEVEL 2. Cause & Effect For this and future levels, EyeLearn requires a PRIMMA calibration to function. We recommend a 5-point calibration, using images instead of targets to hold the user s attention (for more information see the Configuration Calibration section in the Primma or Duo User Manual). In this level the user will consciously interact with the eyetracker and discover that the movement on the screen corresponds to their eye movement, causing fun things to happen. Above all, it will help them to understand, in a simple and fun way, how the Irisbond eyetracker works. We recommend playing the games in order; that is, working through the rows starting on the left. The time spent on this level will vary depending on the user; it is important not to tire or wear them out by spending too much time on it. It works best to stop before the user asks to; this way the user always looks forward to the next session and is eager to learn more. 4.3 LEVEL 3. Recognition and Practice In this level, the user learns more about how to use the system and plays games that allow them to learn how to use the drag mouse function. Once the user has mastered these games they are then able to use all the features of the mouse: moving, clicking and 11
Basic User Mode dragging. The games in this level are more educational in nature, and once a user has mastered all the functions of the mouse, we then have a wider variety of games to play. It works best to go over games previously played as well as starting to play new ones. Without doubt, this is the most entertaining, engaging and motivating level. The time spent on this level will be decided by the user, always bearing in mind that we do not wish to overtire or wear them out. Games that require the user to be able to use the drag function can be identified by the icon below: 4.4 LEVEL 4. Evaluation and Customizing After successfully completing the previous levels, we can then be sure that the user now understands the eyetracker and how it works. Now we need to show them the possibilities for communicating using the device. Bearing in mind the competencies, abilities and cognitive level of the user, choose the method of communication and the number of pictograms needed. We recommend starting with the simplest communicator and exploring it with the user, adding new pictograms little by little. This way the communicator will grow with the child or adult, without changing in appearance or function; the communication panels will gradually widen in scope and can be customized according to the user s needs and abilities. Below you can see the communicators included in this level. 12
Basic User Mode Communicator with 6 pictograms Communicator with 8 pictograms Communicator with 10 pictograms Keyboard 13
Basic User Mode 4.5 CATEGORIES All LEVELS have 3 different categories. In LEVEL 1, LEVEL 2 and LEVEL 3 the categories are: Games that we recommend playing to obtain the skills that we are hoping to master in this LEVEL. Games that we recommend playing to strengthen the skills that we are hoping to master in this LEVEL. Here we access the games that the therapist has decided to add in the Settings area (for more information see section 3.3.3) LEVEL 4 Categories Here you can choose from four different communicators with 6, 8 or 10 pictograms or a keyboard. Games that we recommend playing to strengthen the skills that we are hoping to master in this LEVEL. Here we access the games that the therapist has decided to add in the Settings area (for more information see section 3.3.3) 14
Basic User Mode 4.6 BASIC SETTINGS To open the settings window, click on the Settings icon. The following window will then open 15
Basic User Mode 16
Basic User Mode You will then see that there are three different sections: - Avatar: we can choose the avatar we prefer to accompany us through the learning process (by default this is a star). - User type: you can choose between BASIC and ADVANCED. By default, BASIC is selected. - Basic settings: here you can add more games to each of the levels. Click on Manage my levels and an icon for every LEVEL will appear. Clicking on each icon will open a window which allows the therapist to change, remove or add apps or games. To access this, click on the tab: This window has 12 empty boxes because it hasn t yet been configured. When you select any of the cells, you are given three options: Internet, Computer and Close. 17
Basic User Mode Allows you to create links to apps or other online games, as well as change or delete links. There are two fields to complete: name of the app or game and web address. Allows you to add and/or create shortcuts to apps or games that you have installed on your computer. Windows Explorer will open allowing you to search for the app or game. In the field below you must give this shortcut a name. 18
Advanced User Mode 5. ADVANCED USER MODE 5.1 ACCESS ADVANCED USER MODE To switch from basic to advanced user mode (and vice versa), click on the EyeLearn settings icon. In the User Type section, choose ADVANCED. When clicking to go back, you will see that the program has changed. 5.2 ADVANCED CONTENT When the program is in advanced mode, the main window will be different and the levels from the basic mode will not appear. Instead, the window will have three buttons: Communicator, Apps and Games. 19
Advanced User Mode Direct access to the communicator that you have chosen in Add Communicator Access to all the games and apps selected in Manage Apps Access to all the EyeLearn images selected in Manage apps Apps Games 20
Advanced User Mode 5.3 ADVANCED SETTINGS In the advanced settings menu, there are three options: - 1. Add Communicator: allows you to choose or add a communicator Manage Apps: allows you to add shortcuts to web pages and apps that the user has installed on their computer/device Manage Games: allows you to decide which games from the basic user mode will also be available in the advanced user mode. Option no. 1: Add Communicator. When you click on this, four icons appear, as shown below: Description/Explanation of icons: Select a communicator with 6, 8 or 10 pictograms or select the keyboard communicator (these communicators were mastered in level 4) Select any other communicator that you have already installed Select your own communicator made using Plaphoons Close menu 21
Advanced User Mode Option no. 2: Manage Apps. When you click on this, a window opens which allows you to add, change and remove previously installed or online apps. To add an app, click on the + (add) icon. To create a link to a web page or app, follow the same process explained in section 4.6 of this manual, Basic Settings. Example: Using Windows Explorer, search for the app you wish to install, in this case Calibre. The program will allow you to add a name to identify this app (for example, Calibre ). Confirm the name by clicking OK. Next the below window will open showing that the app has a shortcut in EyeLearn. The program allows you to make changes easily by clicking on the Edit and Delete icons. In order to see these icons, you must click on the app that you have created a shortcut to. 22
Advanced User Mode Description/Explanation of icons: EDIT: Allows you to change information DELETE: allows you to remove the app from the program Close options menu Option no. 3: Manage Games. When you click on this, a new window opens which allows you to select all of the games on the EyeLearn system. 23
Advanced User Mode The window has two columns: on the left, you will see all the games available on EyeLearn and on the right, you will see the games you have chosen to continue using in the advanced mode. You can select these one at a time or all at once by clicking on them and moving them from one column to the other with > (greater than) button to move them to the righthand column and < (less than) button to move them to the left-hand column. 24
Abilities Test 6. EyeLearn ABILITIES TEST All users have different abilities and competencies. EyeLearn has an online test which assesses users to see if the system is suitable for the user in question. The result of the test is evaluated by teachers and speech therapists who work in partnership with Irisbond. Icon to access the test After evaluating the user and judging he/she to have the necessary abilities and capacities, visual training can then begin. It s important that the user progresses through the levels in the order prescribed to ensure that learning happens gradually, in a way that adapts to our user s specific requirements. This is how we make sure that the process is fun and none of the communicative potential is lost. 25
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS 7. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS We would like to thank all the teachers and therapists who have contributed, and those who continue to contribute, to the development and improvement of this tool which offers users the opportunity to communicate and share with others their thoughts, wishes, feelings and much more using a computer and the Irisbond technology.
