2 What is Virtualization Virtualization has been around since the 1960s. IBM used this technique to split the supercomputers of the time into separate machines The technology was abandoned in the 1980s and 1990s due to cheaper Windows servers. 2 2

3 Key Concepts of Virtualization Virtual Machine- A Virtual Machine is a software container that tricks an operating system into thinking that it IS the computer in question. All hardware is simulated in software, allowing flexibility. Key benefits include: Compatibility (explain) Isolation Versatility Speed 3 3

4 What can I run on my Mac? What s a Virtual Appliance? Appliances often make us think of kitchenware! In Virtualization, a virtual appliance is a guest operating system you can run. Think of them as extensions to your virtualization host! Ubuntu is an open-source, stable, powerful Linux community -based operating system and only one of many that you can install for free. Windows Vista and Windows XP are undoubtedly familiar to you, and run excellently on Fusion. 4 4

6 Installing a Guest Nlite is a free Windows optimizer designed to create smaller, faster virtual operating systems. In my case, I reduced the size of Windows XP by 320MB and effectively doubled the speed. Appliance Installing is easy in Fusion. This example deals with Windows XP installation. In order to optimize speed, I recommend trimming the original install disk to remove unnecessary features. 6 6

7 Setting up After the original Windows install disk (or disk image) is ready, Fusion does the rest. You will choose how much RAM to allocate to your guest installation. Fusion automatically detects Printers, USB devices, DVD drives, and your multicore processors (new in version 2 and a very welcome feature). 7 7

8 Views Fusion has three powerful viewing modes. Unity mode integrates the guest right into the dock. Fullscreen mode makes it appear as if OSX is absent Windowed mode keeps the guest within its own window, just like an ordinary application. In the above example, you can see that the OSX dock is on the left side, and the Windows toolbar is along the bottom. This is unity view and allows easy access to both operating systems. 8 8

11 Windows Fusion Apps I have found several indispensable applications not available for the Mac. Acrobat 9 Extended allows Flash integration inside Pdf files. Articulate creates Quizzes and distance learning Powerpoint files. Nvivo and atlas.ti allow qualitative data analysis to be integrated with your Mac applications Any other Windows only application can now be run on your Mac 11 11
