Engine Test Bench Manual ADH-1 (version 1.0) 1. Preparation for work Engine test bench (further dyno ) is mainly for measuring pressure force made by engine. Dyno cooperates with strain gauge beams connected in bridge circuit 4 wires must be protruded. There is a possibility to use any strain gauge beam with various allowed pressure forces - from few Netwons [N], even up to couple hundreds of Newtons [N]. Dyno can be tared and calibrated. For choosing strain gauge beam check parameter Rated Output. Magnitude of it should be about 2.0 mv/v. Dyno has very sensitive measuring system which gives ability to make very precise measurements. For example while using 200[N] beam, uncertainty of measurement is 0,0001[N]. Useful resolution of measurement is 0,005[N] (after comply so called noises ). Strain gauge beam measures pressure in one, specified direction which is marked on beam. Beam can be mounted vertically or horizontally. In case of vertical mounting (when engine is mounted horizontally to the beam), engines thrust is measured without influences made by mass of engine or fuel. In that case mass of engine has to be entered manually. That weight is not relevant on measurements, it is only for information purpose. In case of horizontal mounting (engine mounted with nozzle directed upwards), measured pressure consist of pressure made by thrust and by mass of engine. After starting measurement Dyno checks mass of full engine and after its work once again of empty engine. In calculations and graph drawings mass of used fuel is proportionally subtracted. Dyno is equipped with colorful touch screen. Whole parameter settings and dyno handling are made by touching appropriate areas on screen. Easiest way is to use pencil with rubber to touch the screen. Using of sharp tools may permanently destroy screen. On the right side of dyno is 6-joint connector for connecting strain gauge beam, temperature sensor and separated connector for connecting with PC. Joint number (counting from left-upper side): 1. Temperature sensor power device 2. Strain gauge beam, mass black wire 3. Strain gauge beam, power device red wire 4. Strain gauge beam, signal - white wire 5. strain gauge beam, signal + green wire 6. Temperature sensor signal 1

Power device connector: + outside joint (9-14V, 100mA) - inside joint Attention!!! While making measurements use battery as a power device. Using of AC adapter, especially impulse one, causes in very big noises. Also unplug the computer. After connecting power device, welcome screen will appear and 2 buttons Computer and Engine test bench. After choosing one, Dyno will turn into work mode. Computer Dyno driver is ready to connecting with computer. Full description in further sections. Engine test bench Dyno parameters changing, engine measurements, memory management. In any moment there is a possibility to switch between computer and Engine test bench modes. First time using dyno certain actions has to be made: Perform the function factory settings Calibrate the screen (function available in factory settings ) Set own parameters (engine direction, taring, calibrations etc.) Actions mentioned above can be found in menu Setup, described in further sections 2. Engine testing After choosing engine test bench mode, main Dyno menu will appear. Data connected with current measurement are shown in windows, as: Team, Engine, Descr. text fields which allows to type any text describing engine. Individual fields does not have strict destination and can be filled by own requisition. Filling text field is possible after touch the screen in place of field. Its capacity is 20 chars. Below engine describing areas are fields: - F. Mass mass of full engine - E. Mass mass of empty engine - T. Thrust total thrust of engine - Time time of engines work - St. Thrust starting thrust of engine - W. Thrust work thrust of engine - W. Thrust 1 - work thrust of engine 1 - Delay time of delay before priming - P. Thrust priming thrust F. Mass, E. Mass Mass of engine before and after work is displayed. If measurements are done in horizontal position of engine (see Setup -> Engine ), then in windows F. Mass and E. Mass have to be typed manually, by pressing Mass button. If measurements are done in vertical position, then manual mass typing is turned off. Mass of engine is automatically checked before start and right after ends of its work. If engine has a priming, then its empty mass is mass of engine before priming blow. T. Thrust (Total thrust) Thrust of engine displayed as product of thrust *work time. Thrust is calculated from separated measurements. If vertical position of engine is set, then engine mass and mass of used fuel is subtracted every time. Displayed value is in [Ns]. 2

Time Time without including priming. St. Thrust Starting thrust (maximal thrust) is displayed. Mass of empty engine and used fuel is proportionally subtracted (if vertical position is set). W. Thrust - Work thrust is displayed. This thrust is measured after ¼ time of engines work from the moment of start. After choosing Next button further engines parameters are displayed: - Temp Environment temperature is displayed. Temperature can be set manually ( Setup ) or automatically if temperature sensor is connected. Temperature values does not affect on measurements, it is only for information needs. Strain gauge beam is automatically compensated via temperature. - Delay Delay of priming blow. Given is time value from end of engines work up to priming blow. Minimum delay interval is 0,2 sec. if that interval would be shorter than priming will be added to thrust. To measure priming delay set Delay T in Setup. It is the time in which Dyno makes measurements after end of engines work. - P. Thrust Maximal thrust of priming. - W. Thrust1 Value of thrust measured in 4/5 time of engines work from the moment of start. 2.1 Main functions - function keys Clear Allows to clear all information areas (text windows) and measurement windows. Clearing is for erasing text windows which describes engine. Measurement windows will be by the way automatically overwritten after measurement. While making measurements of one type of engine it s easier not to clear text windows but correct them e.g. by typing following engine number. Correcting text windows become available after touching appropriate window. Mass allows to type mass of full and empty engine and to use dyno as a scale. If vertical position of engine is chosen than weighting is automatic. Then mass typing windows are disabled. Next More parameters are displayed. Following data is displayed via blue color. Graph Graphical display of engines work. During displaying graph, pressing screen in any place results in returning to main menu. Measur. Measuring process starts. On the graph, up to date, engines thrust in time is displayed. Screen can contain about 380 single measurements, so due to set value of measurements per second, one screen can contain 0,8 sec. up to 6 sec. of measurement. Graph is continually drawn. Graphs scale is automatically chosen due to value of maximal strain of strain gauge beam. Beginning and finish of work is recognized automatically. After measurements finish, final graph is drawn, after choosing appropriate scale of time and thrust axis. Measurement is automatically saved into memory. Erasing of measurement is available in Memory menu. Memory Entry to sub-menu responsible for devices memory. Will be described later. Setup Entry to sub-menu responsible for all settings. Will be described later. Exit Returning from main menu, to computer connection mode. 3

2.2 Menu Setup Menu Setup gives ability to set Dynos parameters. In windows are shown actual values of parameters. Changing them can be done by pressing appropriate buttons or windows. Tare Automatic taring. It Has to be done every time after changing strain gauge beam and after any changes, which impact on measurement (changing of engines mounting etc.). Taring has to be done also after few measurements, because pollution (which sticks to strain gauge beam) made by engine during work might impact on measurement. Calibr. Calibrating of Dyno. After taring object with well know mass should be putted on strain gauge beam. It doesn t matter it would be before or after mounting elements for engine holding. It is important to tare Dyno right before calibration. After putting mentioned object and pressing Calibr once again, type mass in grams (of object) and press Ent. Right taring and mass can be checked in main menu after pressing Mass button. Default Returns all settings to fabric ones and calibrates the screen. Set is: Sample: 470 Min. Start: 0,1[N] G const: 9,80665 Temperature: 20 o C Delay: 5 sec. Screen calibration allows to set right screen reaction. Act due to hints on screen. Control points on screen should be pressed firmly and decisively. Remember do not use sharp tools e.g. needles, metal scribers etc. It should be relatively soft things best choose is to use toothpick. Min. Start Thrust (In [N]) has to be typed, after reaching that value measurement will start. That value depends on used strain gauge beam. Typing too small value may result in spontaneous start of measurement caused, for example, by vibrations of table to which dyno is mounted. Example values: 10[N] beam 0.005[N] 60[N] beam 0,05[N] 200[N] beam 0,1[N] Values shown above are minimum values. Bigger values can be typed, because Dyno records about 130 measurements before start of engine. Calculating of thrust will start after reaching set value. Sample parameter which sets number of measurements per second. Available are: 470, 235, 117 and 58 measur./sec. After pressing Sample button windows with values will appear. Appropriate value has to be chosen. Engine parameter which sets orientation of engine. As mentioned earlier possible are horizontal and vertical position of engine. After pressing a button list with available positions will appear, which one of them has to be chosen. In horizontal mode mass of engine and fuel doesn t affect on measurements. Mass values are not taken into account in calculations. Option of manual setting of mass in main menu is unlocked. Set value are only for information. 4

In vertical mode (nozzle directed upwards), Option of manual setting of mass is blocked. Mass of engine is automatically checked right before start and right after end of its work. If engine consist priming, it has to be remembered, that mass checking is before priming blow (delay of weighting after end of engines work about 0,2 sec.). Delay T parameter which set additional time of continue measurement after end of engines work. It is needed to record priming work. Also during work of engines may appear some pauses (caused by engine). If those pauses would be bigger than 0,2 sec., then if Delay T is set on 0 sec., measuring will Stop. G const - parameter which sets value of earth gravitational acceleration. That value depends on latitude and altitude (above sea level). For example: Pole 9,83332 Normal 9,80665 Equator - 9,78030 London Washington, D.C Zurich G value is automatically saved with every measurement, so changing of its value doesn t change previous measurements. Language Gives ability to choose In which language all communicates and descriptions are show on Dyno. After pressing list with available languages will appear. Choosing of language is followed by pressing area with appropriate one. Temp Setting temperature is (only in that case) not followed by pressing appropriate button on the screen but by area on screen, where temperature value is displayed. Set value of temperature does not affect on any calculations. It is given only for information. Exit returning to main menu. 2.3 Menu Memory After choosing sub-menu Memory (from main menu) firstly value of free space is displayed. Value is given in seconds and approximately informs how many second of measurements can be saved. That value is dependent on Sample parameter. The higher Sample parameter, the less measurements can be saved. It has to be remembered that decreased frequency of measurements decrease its accuracy. After about 2 sec. windows with content of memory and all function keys will appear. Window with content of memory was separated into 3 parts, in which engines descriptions (Team, Engine, Description) are shown. Initial 11 chars are displayed. Measurements are shown in order of saving in memory. It is not always order of measurement e.g. if we erase earlier measurement, than on its place, new one will be saved, so It would be shown at the end of memory but in place of earlier one. On right hand side of the screen are keys for list rewinding. It is possible to rewind line by line as also by whole pages. Highlighted measurement can be displayed or cleared. 5

Keys description: Clr. Mem. Clears whole memory. After pressing additional question for confirmation will appear. Clearing is irreversible. Clr. Rec. Clear highlighted measurement. After pressing additional question for confirmation will appear. Clearing is irreversible. Find Gives ability to type chars string, which attend to search through saved measurements. After pressing keyboard will appear, with which typing inscription to find measurement is carried out. Key OK confirms typing. Searching of measurement is possible by pressing measurements list. According to which window will be pressed (Team, Engine, Description), then in that section searching would be done. Found measurement is displayed on the top of list and is highlighted. Display Show values of chosen measurement. These value are shown in the same way as in main menu. Additionally option of changing text parameters of engine is possible. After pressing windows (Team, Engine, Descr.) changing of text is possible. There are keys: Save Updates measurement. If text Windows were changes, then New ones are saved into memory. Measurement values stays unchanged. Graph Shows measurement graph, like after measurement. Next Shows more of engines parameters (in blue color). Exit Returning to Memory menu. Exit Returning to main menu. 3. Computer connection. Dyno can be connected to the computer. It could be connected by typical internet connector.
