1 Beverly D. Grappone Hall Certified LEED Silver Home of NHTI s State-of-the Art Nursing Simulation Center Project: Beverly D. Grappone Hall Facility Size: 30,500 sq. ft. Location: Concord, New Hampshire The Facility The Beverly D. Grappone Hall Health Education and Academic Center is part of New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) located in Concord, New Hampshire. The 30,500 square foot building, completed in October of 2009, is the new home of NHTI s nursing program and consists of classrooms, faculty offices, an auditorium, a computer lab, lecture halls, conference rooms, a study lounge, nurses stations and a clinical resource center. This three story complex is certified LEED Silver by the United States Green Building Council. Project Scope Yeaton Associates, Inc. performed the mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, sustainable and energy engineering for the Beverly D. Grappone Hall Health Education and Academic Center at New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord, New Hampshire. The overall project scope was to design an energy-efficient, state-of-the-art building that incorporated the infrastructure needs of NHTI s nursing program. Project Result The mechanical building systems in the Beverly D. Grappone Hall Health Education and Academic Center include a highefficiency chiller plant, a condensing gas boiler plant and lab ventilation systems. Detailed load calculations and energy modeling were completed to properly size equipment by Yeaton Associates, Inc. A key part of the design process and the success of this project was continual communication with facilities personnel, end-user occupants, administration and our design partners. This allowed the team to achieve a balance among energy efficiency, construction costs and occupant comfort along with maintaining a focus on achieving LEED Silver certification by the United States Green Building Council.

2 A natural gas fired, high efficiency, multiple boiler plant was used to permit staged firing and maintain a hot water temperature reset schedule based on outside air temperature. Injection pumps were used to provide critical flow through the natural gas fired condensing boilers. Low water temperature hot water was used to maximize condensing and, hence, efficiency.

3 Domestic hot water was generated indirectly as a zone off from the high efficiency natural gas fired boiler plant. A recirculation system was installed to provide instantaneous hot water at the faucets. An oil-less compressed air plant was used to provide clean air for operating the training mannequins and to simulate medical gasses for hands-on instruction.

4 Variable speed/flow pumping was used to maximize energy efficiency and address cooling load dynamics. The associated variable frequency drives were integrated with the facility energy management system. 5 A high efficiency modular chiller with free-cooling capability was used to produce chilled water for facility air conditioning. Sustainable design features such as sunshades were incorporated into the architectural design to reduce the facility s cooling load. The feasibility of use and related energy savings were estimated through energy modeling.
