1 COLLEGE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COURSE SYLLABUS/SPECIFICATION CODE & TITLE: ITCS 334 Introduction to PL/SQL (ODBA 2) WEIGHT: ( ) PREREQUISITE: ITCS 333 DESCRIPTION: OBJECTIVES: This course provides students with critical knowledge and advanced training on PL/SQL that represents programming extensions to SQL. Students learn about PL/SQL syntax, blocks and programming constructs as well as the advantages of integrating SQL with those constructs. In addition, students learn how to design reusable programs units such as procedures and functions. Moreover, it helps student in learning how to use isql* Plus as a development environment; for writing PL/SQL programs units and execute them efficiently. 1. To critically understand and apply concepts of Procedural Language extension to SQL (PL/SQL) 2. To be competent in the standard data access language for relational database and familiar with integrating procedural constructs to SQL. 3. 2 INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOS) Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: A. Knowledge and Understanding Concepts and Theories: Recognize critical concepts and principles related to PL/SQL such A1 as its execution environment, its benefits, its block structure, its block types and its program constructs. Subject-Specific Skills Problem Solving: Identify real life information management problems and solve them by B1 writing appropriate PL/SQL programs. B2 Modeling and Design: NA Application of Methods and Tools: Apply Oracle products that help in designing complete business solution such as SQL* Plus. C. Thinking Skills C1 C2 C3 Analytic: Critically analyze real world problems and user requirements in order to choose the appropriate PL/SQL programming blocks for solving and managing such problems. Synthetic: Critically integrate Oracle DB with GUIs developed using other programming languages for the purpose of solving real-world problems. Creative: NA D. (2008) Oracle PL/SQL Best Practice: Oracle Database 11g, Second Edition, O Reilly Media ASSESSMENTS: Type of Assessment Assignments Description ILOs Weighting Two assignments to be given to students, each assignment worth ten marks. The assignments contain several questions designed to help students consolidate the concepts learned as well as assess students skills in writing PL/SQL programs for data manipulation, transaction control and solving business problems. The average of these assignments will be counted., C1, D1, D3 Test One practical test to be given to students B1,, C1 15% 10% 4
5 Major Test Final Exam In- during lab time, it will take two hours and worth 15 marks. The test will cover topics from week 1 to 13. A practical project that will assess the student knowledge and skills in consuming Oracle DB using PL/SQL and other applications. The student will be required to develop a full project that integrates Oracle DB with another programming language. The major test is a written, in-class 60 minutes test. It will cover topics studied in the first 8 weeks. The majority of the test s questions are problem solving, short answer, and writing PL/SQL programs and queries. The final exam is a comprehensive, written exam and will be of 2 hours. It will assess students knowledge and skills in writing appropriate PL/SQL programs to solve particular problems using its different programming blocks. The exam consists of several types of questions such as: multiple choice questions, case studies, etc. In- will allow the students to practice different programming concepts of PL/SQL. They will cover writing appropriate programs for data manipulation, transaction control and business problems.
