1 Math 8 Summer Assignment 2017 DUE: SEPTEMBER 13 TH, 2017 Name: As an incoming 8th grade math student, it is important that you are proficient in several skills from previous math courses. This assignment contains examples of the skills you are expected to know such as solving equations, graphing coordinates, proportional relationships, and geometry as you enter your 8th grade math class this September. **Completion of this packet will count towards your first assessment grade.** **All students entering Math 8 will be assessed on the skills reviewed in this assignment.** If you need assistance with any of these skills, we strongly recommend that you utilize the videos that are provided for each section or go on the Math 8 Summer Assignments website:

2 I. Map Your Mathematical Trip! Directions: Solve each of the following problems. Remember to show all of your work. The solutions will give you the x and y-coordinates of the points you will plot on your map, in order, as you travel around Franklin and back. NOTE: You do not retrace your path to return home. Bon Voyage! Solving Equations: Solve each equation to reveal the x and y-coordinate for each location. Show all of your work. You drive 120 miles from Somerset, New Jersey to Allentown,Pennsylvania. a) If the trip took you 2 hours, what was your average speed in miles per hour? b) Write an equation to describe the number of miles driven, y, in terms of hours driven, x. c) Use your equation to fill in the table below. x (hours) y (miles) d) Does the above situation represent a proportional relationship? How do you know? e) If four gallons of gas cost $10, how much money will you spend on your trip?

The box is a rectangular prism and measures 15 x 8 x 2 centimeters. a) What is the volume of the box? b) If the volume of a Sour Patch Kid is 6 cubic centimeters, approximately how many Sour Patch Kids will fit in the box if it is full? c) The box of Sour Patch Kids costs $1.85. Find the unit rate (price per Sour Patch Kid).
