2 Overview zybooks supports the Learning Tools Integration specification 1.0, and can be integrated as a Tool Provider (TP) in a Learning Management System (LMS). Instructors can create web links that direct a user to specific zybook sections. These web links are single-sign-on capable; the LMS provides the user account information and the zybooks site does not require further authentication (the user does not need to log on to zybooks). Linking to zybooks from an LMS Only verified instructor accounts may create links through the LTI interface. Any account verified as an instructor by the zybooks website can create web links to any zybook of which they are an instructor. Note that a zybook must have been created and released through the zybooks release process before it s available for deep linking. Creating a new link has two steps: 1. Create the link in the LMS. 2. Configure the link on the zybooks website. Create the link in the LMS Creating a link to a zybook requires the following items: The URL of the tool provider: An authentication secret: (contact support@zybooks.com for institution-specific LTI credentials) An authentication key: (contact support@zybooks.com for institution-specific LTI credentials) The above items are required by the LMS when creating the deep link. If your administrator has configured zybooks as a global LTI provider, then one or more of the above items may not be necessary. Examples on how to create web links using Blackboard Learn are provided below. Other LMSs may have different procedures. Ask your campus LMS administrator for more information 2/10
3 Configure the link on the zybooks website The created link must be associated with a specific zybook and section before students can access it. While logged in to the LMS using an address that is assigned as an instructor on one or more zybooks, follow a newly created LMS link to zybooks. The following screen to select a zybook is shown. Only zybooks on which the user is a verified instructor are included: Select the zybook to link to. A new screen will be shown that provides directions on how to directly link to a section. Follow the directions on the screen to complete the linking process. Once a section has been selected, the link will be accessible by students. 3/10
4 LTI launch request parameters (LMS administrators) zybooks expects the following parameters to be supplied by the LMS during the launch request. This information is only pertinent to LMS administrators when configuring zybooks as a tool provider. Most LMSs should automatically provide the parameters by default, but some may require configuration updates to ensure completeness of the request. Launch URL: Parameter name (LTI 1.0) Required? Description resource_link_id Yes Provide a new unique value along with an Instructor role in a request to create a new link to an unconfigured resource. Provide a previously used value to link to an already configured resource. roles Yes Provide a 'Student' or 'Learner' role to link students to a resource. Provide an 'Instructor' role to allow the creation and configuration of new links. lis_person_contact_ Yes Provide the requesting user s address. zybooks will log this user in, automatically creating an account if the has not been used before. If the linked book is free, the user will be automatically subscribed. lis_person_name_given No The first name of the user. Defaults to LTI. list_person_name_family No The last name of the user. Defaults to User. context_title No The title of the resource. Defaults to an empty string. launch_presentation_return_url No The redirect URL back to the LMS after a link has been configured. 4/10
5 Examples The following is an example of how to create new web links on a LMS platform. Different LMS platforms may have different procedures for creating new web links. Ask your campus administrator for assistance if necessary. Blackboard Learn The following are directions provided by Blackboard : A Tool Provider is a third party tool that implements the Basic LTI protocol. Basic Learning Tools Interoperability is an initiative managed by the IMS Global Learning Consortium to seamlessly integrate externally hosted web-based learning tools into courses. If you use external resources that require logins for activities, such as virtual science experiments, interactive demonstrations, or assessments, you can specify a web link as a Link to a Tool Provider. Depending on configuration, this can then pass user information to the Tool Provider, creating a seamless experience for students. Note: The Blackboard administrator at your school controls whether this tool is available. If this tool is not available, you can contact your administrator to discuss its status. Administrators can learn more at Basic LTI Tool Providers. 1. Change Edit Mode to ON. 2. Access a Content Area, Learning Module, Lesson Plan, or folder. 3. On the Action Bar, point to Build Content to access the drop down list. 4. Select Web Link. 5. On the Create Web Link page, type a Name. 6. Select the This link is to a Tool Provider check box. 7. If the Blackboard administrator at your school has already set up the Tool Provider, type the web address for the Tool Provider in the URL box. If not, and you have been given an XML tool descriptor by the Tool Provider, paste it in the Tool Provider Configuration XML box. 5/10
6 Canvas 1. Configure an External App for zybooks at a course or global level. Global configuration may require (LMS administrator authorization). To configure the external app for the course, click the Add app button at the top of the course settings page: 6/10
7 2. Enter the following information into the form. The Privacy option must be set to either only or public. The public setting is encouraged to ensure student names are made available to an instructor in the zybooks class roster. Enter the institution-specific consumer key and shared secret provided to you by 7/10
8 3. Add a link in a module to zybooks. Select the External Tool item type, select the zybooks app, and enter a desired name for the link. 4. Complete the directions in the Configure the link on the zybooks website section of this document to complete the configuration of the link.
