1 Datathon 2018 Connecting to MicroStrategy on AWS Cloud Introduction This document describes how to connect to MicroStrategy on AWS cloud. The first part will show screenshots and introduction to the MicroStrategy AWS cloud environment, the second part will describe connecting and useful commands in more detail. 4 Part II - MicroStrategy on AWS useful command lines (content created by Henri Francois Chadeisson) Introduction MicroStrategy on AWS now supports Amazon Linux, which is more cost efficient than Red Hat. The downsize of using Amazon Linux is that it does not support a GUI such as VNC. Therefore, here is a quick guide to help everyone manage your Amazon Linux environment in command line. Actions and tools Before we start, here is a list of administrative actions, its related tools and the machine were the action needs to be performed Action Tool Machine Connect to MicroStrategy Your browser Your machine web Connect to the Developer Remote Desktop tool Your machine Instance Connect to the Server Putty / WinSCP Developer Instance Instance Create a new MySQL MySQL Workbench Developer Instance Database Create an ODBC connection Command Line / Putty Server Instance Get MicroStrategy server Command line / Putty Server Instance status Start / Stop MicroStrategy Command Line / Putty Server Instance Connect to Developer Developer Developer Instance Transfer Files to Server and WinSCP Developer Instance / or Tomcat (images, plugins) Start / Stop Tomcat Command Line Server Instance Must do configuration Although the system is mostly preconfigured by default, some manual actions are still required to get a fully operational administration setup. We recommend doing those before starting your work on your AWS Linux platform. Each incremental configuration is documented in the following detailed action sections

5 Connect to MicroStrategy Web Once your environment is provisioned, you should receive the following Configure your Usher badge as described, or note your password, and click on Access MicroStrategy Platform to open MicroStrategy Web. Login using Usher or the login / password provided in the . Connect to the Developer Instance From MicroStrategy Platform home page, scroll down to the Essentials Connections section and click on the Developer Machine Name to copy it Open your remote desktop connection tool and configure the connection with the Machine Name link, user and password From PC : go to Start Menu and type mstsc or Remote Desktop Connection From Mac : install Microsoft Remote Desktop from the App Store : Before login to the Developer Instance, you should configure a folder redirection, in order to copy file from your Machine to the Developer Instance.

6 From Mac : Redirection tab From PC : Local Resources tab > More > Drives Connect to the Server Instance From the Developer Instance, there are 2 ways you can connect to your Server Instance 1. Putty : for executing administrative commands on your Server 2. WinSCP : for browsing and transferring folders and files Before configuring both, you need to get the Intelligence Server Address from MicroStrategy Platform home page Configure Putty 1. Find and open Putty from the Developer Instance s Desktop 2. Paste the Server Address in the Host Name as well as in Saved Sessions field and Save it 3. Double click on the newly created entry in Saved Sessions to login 4. Use mstr username and password from the Welcome 5. When prompted on a Security Alert, answer Yes

7 Configure WinSCP 1. Find and open WinSCP from the Developer Instance s Desktop 2. You should be prompted to add a New Site, which is your Server Instance connection a. Paste the Server Address in Host Name b. Port : 22 c. User Name : mstr d. Password : the one you got from the Welcome 3. Save your connection and click the Login button

8 Configure Notepad++ for Win SCP WinSCP can open files that are remotely stored on the server and let you edit and save these files directly on the server. Notepad++ is very convenient for this, and can be configured by default: 1. Right click on a file in Win SCP remote folder 2. Browse to Edit > Configure

9 3. Click the Add button on the popup that shows up 4. Select External Editor and then click the Browse button 5. In the popup that shows up, click on This PC > Windows (C:) > Program Files (x86) > Notepad++ > notepad++ 6. Confirm by clicking OK on all opened dialog box 7. Finally, Right Click on a file in Win SCP > Edit > Notepad++ 8. Make your changes and save. Notepad++ should always be available by default from now on

10 Create a new MySQL Database MySQL is installed by default on the Server Instance, you can use this database engine to store your data. MySQL Workbench is installed on the Developer Instance and let you do most of MySQL operations. 1. Find and open MySQL Workbench from the Developer Instance Desktop 2. Create a new connection with the + button a. Set a connection name b. Hostname : same as for Putty and WinSCP c. Port : 3306 d. Username : mstr e. Password : use the usual one 3. Use the Test Connection feature to make sure it works and click OK You should now be able to connect to MySQL server, browse Schemas (databases), execute queries and import data. To create your own database, right click on any Schema > Create Schema

11 In order to connect MicroStrategy to this database, you need to create a new ODBC Connection in the Server using Putty Create an ODBC connection 1. Connect to the Server with Putty 2. Go to MicroStrategy bin folder : cd /opt/mstr/microstrategy/bin 3. Create the ODBC connection using the connectivity wizard :./mstrconnectwiz MYSQL_CONNECTOR NAME_YOUR_CONNECTION SERVER_ADDRESS 3306 MYSQL_SCHEMA_NAME /usr/lib64/libmyodbc5w.so -u:mstr -p:usual_password Usefull KB : Get MicroStrategy server status This can be done in command line from Putty: cd /opt/mstr/microstrategy/bin./mstrctl s IntelligenceServer gs Start / Stop MicroStrategy Still using Putty : Stop MicroStrategy :./mstrctl s IntelligenceServer stop Start MicroStrategy :./mstrctl s IntelligenceServer start o Note : An error will show up If the service is not stopped. Retry starting it until the error disappears

12 Connect to Developer MicroStrategy Developer is not configure to connect on the Server by default. 1. Find and open Developer from the Developer Instance Desktop Transfer Files to Server and / or Tomcat (images, plugins) The easiest way to transfer to the Server file is by using WinSCP. This requires transferring files from your Computer to the Developer Instance first. In order to do this, make sure the Folder / Drives redirection is properly setup, in the Connect to Developer Instance configuration steps Best practices for images MicroStrategy relies on different folders for images depending on the use case : web display : /opt/apache/tomcat/apache-tomcat /webapps/MicroStrategy/images mobile display : /opt/apache/tomcat/apache-tomcat /webapps/MicroStrategyMobile/images library : /opt/apache/tomcat/apache-tomcat /webapps/MicroStrategyLibrary/images exports : /opt/mstr/microstrategy/intelligenceserver/images We recommend all images to be copied at least to the 4 folders above. Best practices for plugins Most D3 and ESRI plugins should be available in all MicroStrategy tomcat folders: web : /opt/apache/tomcat/apache-tomcat /webapps/microstrategy/plugins mobile : /opt/apache/tomcat/apache-tomcat /webapps/MicroStrategyMobile/plugins library : /opt/apache/tomcat/apache-tomcat /webapps/MicroStrategyLibrary/plugins Other plugins are handled on a case by case basis depending on the target interface. Copying files To copy a file from the Developer Instance to the Server Instance, browse to the target folder in WinSCP and drag & drop the target file there. Note: New plugins require to restart tomcat in order to work. Images don t.

13 Start / Stop Tomcat 1. Open Putty 2. Go to tomcat binary folder : cd /opt/apache/tomcat/apache-tomcat /bin 3. Stop tomcat :./shutdown.sh 4. Start tomcat :./startup.sh Upon re-starting Tomcat, it can take around 30 seconds for MSTR to re-store connectivity. Note you may receive a 503 Bad Gateway error on the webpage if it hasn t fully restored yet. Other useful generic Linux commands Navigate to a folder Command name : cd stands for Change Directory How to use it : cd <folder name> cd /home/mstr cd /opt/mstr/microstrategy/bin cd /opt/apache/tomcat/apache-tomcat /bin Show files for current folder Command name : ls stands for List Segments How to use it : ls l Which folder am I in? Command name : pwd stands for Print Working Directory How to use it : pwd

14 Get help on a Linux command Command name : man stands for Manual How to use it : man <command name> man cd man pwd Create a folder Command name : mkdir stands for Make Directory How to use it : mkdir <new folder name> This will create a folder inside the current folder you are in (use pwd to check where you are) Delete a folder or a file Command name : rm stands for Remove How to use it : rm <file_name> / rm r <folder_name> This supports wildcards. Unzip a file Command name : unzip How to use it : unzip <zip_file_name.zip> Copy paste commands and information On Linux Command Line / Putty, copy pastes works as this: Copy : just select with the Mouse the portion of text you want to copy from the command prompt Paste : click on the Right button of the Mouse Example here, copy/paste of a previously executed ls l command 1. Make the selection puts ls l into the clipboard
