Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), which has traditionally been the engine of reliable data movement, has inherent bottlenecks in performance, especially for wide area networks (WANs), with high round-trip time and packet loss. Underperformance becomes most pronounced on high-bandwidth networks, where available bandwidth is wasted in idle transmission or redundant data transmission. 4 The Aspera Fast, Adaptive, and Secure Protocol (FASP) The severe performance bottlenecks to high-speed data movement over high bandwidth WANs are not caused by the network hardware or digital data itself, where the bandwidth indeed has been doubling every 12 months to 18 months in the past decades. Instead, these bottlenecks are artificial, caused mainly by the underlying protocols for data movement, file transfer (FTP and HTTP), network file systems (NFS and CIFS), and synchronization, for which performance improvements have not kept pace with bandwidth capacity, especially for high-speed global WANs, which also have packet loss and high latency. The majority of these data movement protocols were developed decades ago, so there is an increasing need for a new high-performance, scalable transport protocol.
