It provides an easy, cost-effective way for content and application providers to deliver revenue-producing content and services. For example, developers can create one version of Web content and use it for multiple mobile devices rather than developing content for each device. WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable adapts the content for each device based on the specific device characteristics and capabilities. It includes a device repository that contains hundreds of characteristics about thousands of devices. WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Device Enable is an optional service that can be purchased with WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable. This service entitles WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable customers to receive regular updates to the device repository, including updates about new devices as they become available from device manufacturers. The support updates delivered through WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Device Enable are complementary to, not part of, the WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable product. Mobile portals are an important strategy for customers who want to gain market advantage, increase their customer's loyalty, and increase revenues by leveraging the data market. It is essential for a mobile portal solution to offer easy-to-use services and applications to attract and retain end users, as well as provide an environment that simplifies integration by application and content providers for delivery of their services. Planned availability dates August 10, 2007 (electronic software delivery) September 7, 2007 (media and documentation) Description WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable V6.0 is an integrated, server-side infrastructure offering that enables the design and deployment of mobile solutions, including the enablement of mobile technologies for: Multichannel access of portal content Write once, render on multiple devices Support for the mobile portal navigation model enables more usable and flexible navigation on wireless devices. A mobile portal represents a set of pages with menu links that appear as text, icons, or both. These links allow end users to navigate to sub-menus or content pages. WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable also offers: Navigation, personalized experience, and multi-device rendering User registration and profile management from land-line Web sites Security, access control, and single sign-on Aggregation of a broad mix of applications into a unified display The device-specific adaptation of WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable separates portlet development from page layout and branding. It also allows for the optimization of the content based on the device specific capabilities. Diversity of mobile devices continues to increase, as do their capabilities. Devices differ in their physical characteristics (screen size and keyboard), as well as in the markup languages supported by their browsers. WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable enhances and improves the user experience. Enablement Easy, cost-effective way for content and application providers to deliver revenue-producing content and services, and minimize the complexity of integration Device-independent markup language ("write once, render many") called XML-based Device Independent Markup Extensions (XDIME) Database containing mobile device characteristics Tooling support for application development Markup/layout editors, samples, APIs, and documentation Templates for rapid site development and enforcement of style guidelines Ability to translate existing markup to new and future XHTML devices Tooling For application developers, the Mobile Portal Toolkit provides developers access to pervasive services. The Mobile Portal Toolkit is based on proven technologies and uses open standards to help increase application usage. XDIME Aggregator The role of an aggregator in WebSphere Portal is to collect information about a user's request, select related pages or portlets, and aggregate the output for display. The XDIME aggregator extends the existing aggregation support in WebSphere Portal to XDIME. When WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable receives a request from a device, the XDIME aggregator uses the navigation tree created by the Manage Mobile Pages to select and aggregate the output (pages, portlets, and URLs) in XDIME. During the process of aggregation, the aggregator evaluates the metadata attributes for each navigation node. For instance, the aggregator queries the attributes to display appropriate icons or alternate text. Also, the device capability attributes are compared with those defined by the device policy database to determine whether to present the corresponding page, URL, or portlet for the node. The aggregator also supports display of preload notices. Manage Mobile Pages portlet Allows portal administrators and marketing personnel to define how users will navigate the portal. The mobile pages navigation tree is stored in the navigation model of WebSphere Portal and consists of nodes that represent pages, URLs, labels, or portlets. At runtime, the XDIME aggregator displays and allows users to navigate the tree created by Manage Mobile Pages. Supports the configuration of metadata for each navigation node and portlet on a page. Some metadata will be standard (device characteristics, icons) and understood by the XDIME aggregator. Configuration of custom metadata is also supported, but a custom aggregator or other functionality is required to use this data. Includes support for metadata configuration enables a higher quality user experience by fine-tuning content delivery based on device type and capabilities. For instance, filtering image and audio content when a device does not support those features, or filtering content based on device type or manufacturer. At runtime, the aggregator queries the metadata for a node to determine whether the corresponding page, URL, label, or portlet is to be included in the display output. Creates the navigation for wireless devices and PDAs, and support the configuration of metadata as delivered by the Extended Attributes Configuration Portlet. Preload notice Preload notices are typically informational pages that are optionally displayed after a link is selected and before it is displayed. They may be used to insert special promotional advertisements, notify users of billable charges associated with a selection, or deliver a warning regarding the content to be displayed. 4 The Manage Mobile Pages portlet will: Allow configuration of where preload notices appear in the navigation Allow selection of pre-defined rules for determining when a preload notice is displayed Provide a mechanism for navigation to flow from the preload notice to the target link XDIME Portlets A set of XDIME portlets demonstrates out-of-box capability, and as samples for development purposes (My Favorites, Weather, Mobile Welcome, Reminders (view only), and World Clock (local time only). Multi-Channel Server (MCS) MCS is the run-time component that transforms XDIME input by matching it with policies in the device repository to generate device-specific output. The runtime supports generation of multiple mark-up languages, including XHTML Basic, XHTML Mobile Profile, WML, and HTML. The MCS runtime is integrated into WebSphere Portal via a Portal Filter. A Portlet Filter allows the direct integration of portlets, generating XHTML-MP, XHTML Basic, or WML markup. The Portlet Filter applies an XSLT style sheet as part of the transformation. Two XSLT style sheets are included: XHTML Mobile Profile or Basic to XDIME WML to XDIME Custom XSLTs can be created as needed. Repository of mobile device policies Policies define visual presentation elements (for example, page layouts and style sheets) and device attribute information. The repository is queried by the runtime to generate device-specific markup, and is also consulted by the Manage Mobile Pages, XDIME aggregator, and tooling. WebSphere Portal (Server, Enable, or Extend) is a prerequisite for WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable. The pages rendered to end users can be in any language since WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable does not actually interpret the contents of text objects. Devices for the Korean market are not included in the device repository. Therefore sales to the Korean market are a specialized effort. Contact the Product Management team for Korean opportunities. Mobile Portal Toolkit The Mobile Portal Toolkit is available with WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable and supports IBM Rational Application Developer V7.0 and IBM Rational Software Architect V7.0. The Mobile Portal Toolkit comes with the necessary tools to develop portlet applications for mobile devices, including a simulator for testing. Note: Mobile Portal Toolkit V6.0 requires IBM Rational Application Developer V7.0 or IBM Rational Software Architect V7.0 as a prerequisite and must be purchased separately. WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Device Enable This optional service allows WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable customers who purchase this option to receive device support updates that may become available from IBM after the devices become available from the device manufacturers. If a customer chooses to purchase this option, the quantity of value units for this option should be equal to the quantity of the customer's WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable value units. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee. For the Image Conversion Server component: For performance considerations, you are authorized to install and use only the Image Conversion Server (ICS) component of the program on a separate machine with a single processor (or a machine with multiple processors, if you acquire a PoE for the program for each processor in such machine). The ICS runtime will require a separate IBM WebSphere Application Server license on the machine where ICS is installed. WebSphere Portal Server V (or WebSphere Portal Enable V or WebSphere Portal Extend V ) is a prerequisite for WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable V6.0 on a one-for-one basis. Customers must acquire a separate WebSphere Portal Server (or Enable or Extend) license for each processor on which WebSphere Everyplace Mobile Portal Enable will be installed. The actual price each customer pays for each license depends on that customer's Passport Advantage Agreement terms and discount level.
