Data Discovery and Query Builder offers a framework, run-time, and application development environment for the creation of Web browser-based query construction and management applications. Using the resulting browser-based applications, you can easily create complex ad hoc queries using business and research terms instead of obscure table and column names. The ability to construct complex queries without complex languages or user interfaces means that you can spend time understanding the data and refining queries without the assistance of a database administrator. In addition, Data Discovery and Query Builder exposes APIs to enable programs to benefit from the easy query construction and management functions in Discovery and Query Builder. 3 Description Data Discovery and Query Builder V2.1 is a development framework that allows easy creation of Web-based end-user dynamic query applications. Core components of Data Discovery and Query Builder applications are: Data Query Builder: Web presence for the end user Instance of a DAM: Virtualized data warehouse that users access Data Discovery and Query Builder Studio: Graphical environment that the administrator uses to create the DAM and deploy the Data Query Builder Data Query Builder Data Query Builder is a run-time component of Data Discovery and Query Builder. It consists of a Web-based interface that allows creation of end-user dynamic queries using the terminology, categorization, hierarchies, and logical fields defined in a DAM. You can dynamically create complex searches without prior knowledge of physical data store tables, obscure column names, non-intuitive coded data values, filtering, or join logic. In addition to simplifying construction of complex queries, Data Query Builder manages query and result set data that can either be shared among users or kept private. Query results can be returned in HTML, XML, comma separated values (CSV), XLS (Microsoft Excel), or tab delimited formats. Query results can be sorted and ordered. You can extend Data Query Builder further extended with plug-ins for security, auditing, and end-user usability. Data Query Builder V2.1 supports native Oracle and streamlines the process of query building. DAM DAM is an XML-based document that maps physical to logical data representation. For example, a DAM may map an end user's concept of "age" to the calculation involving the current date and a column in a table containing a birth date. Users see and work with "age," while Data Discovery and Query Builder queries with the calculation for age. Key entries of the DAM are fields and categories. Fields are logical data entities that are available in searches on underlying physical data models. Categories are groups of related fields or other related categories. You can nest categories to any depth. Data Query Builder run-time component uses information from the DAM to determine what terminology and format to use when presenting a user with fields for query construction. The information from the DAM is also used to convert abstract representation of a user's query request into SQL during execution of queries. Data Discovery and Query Builder V2.1 continues to improve the DAM to support user-controlled multiple table occurrences and specification of multiple event occurrences for a single table. The new and enhanced Data Discovery and Query Builder Studio tools enable the administrator to build the DAM specifically for the client environment. Data Discovery and Query Builder Studio Data Discovery and Query Builder Studio is an integrated development environment for creating, customizing, running, and debugging Data Discovery and Query Builder applications. Studio is a set of plug-ins that can be installed into an existing installation, including: IBM Rational Web Developer for WebSphere Software V6.0 Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software V6.0 Rational Software Modeler V6.0 Rational Software Architect V6.0 Eclipse These platforms offer a wide array of development-related tools. The Rational products contain tools that are not available in the base Eclipse platform that Data Discovery and Query Builder application developers may find useful. 4 Query Builder applications is available only in those Rational products listed. With Data Discovery and Query Builder Studio V2.1, you can track and manage changes to the DAM. In addition, you can update saved objects such as queries and results. Data Discovery and Query Builder V2.1 Enhancements Data Discovery and Query Builder V2.1 offers enhancements to query generation capability and usability as well as support for Web Services and Oracle databases. Enhancements and new features include: Native Oracle support: Data Discovery and Query Builder can now run directly against an Oracle data warehouse. Sub Query Support: Allows query conditions to be created using existing saved queries or results enabling better reuse of previous work and more complex requests to be created. Enhanced data abstraction model search feature including searching hierarchical field values (e.g., ICD-9, DRG), searching against field selection values (male and female for a Gender field), and other metadata elements of the model. Faster query building support via quick output only selection, improved metadata display within DAM, and the ability to build event profile conditions directly from the DAM tree. Direct support for integration with query patroller, enabling administrators to retain control of the warehouse system resources including holding, cancelling, or delaying a user query until a less busy time based on query complexity or user class. Enhancements to the support for working with saved objects including access control lists (fine grain control over who can use each saved object), name tagging (arbitrary groupings of saved objects based on their use), tabbed display allowing different types of saved objects to be viewed in isolation of each other, and a key word lookup for quickly finding specific objects. Dynamic table function allowing custom components to build tables "just in time" for query execution. For example, allowing query conditions against WebSphere Information Integrator OmniFind Edition to be directly integrated into the query building process. Dynamic tables can come from anywhere ranging from simple properties files to Web Services. Incident support: Enables queries to search for two or more unique occurrences of a particular condition or value. Full featured integrated auditor: in addition to existing customizable audit support, a new a predefined auditor captures extensive information about the use of the Data Discovery and Query Builder system, right out of the box without additional customization. Support for recovery of deleted queries and results, so that users can recover from accidental deletions. Improved Administrator support for copying, renaming and deleting user queries. Maintenance support for saved Data Discovery and Query Builder objects: Studio component that can monitor the effect of changes to abstraction models on existing saved objects and simplify the process of modifying those objects to be compatible with the changes. Studio View Estimator: Administrators can validate the effect of their abstract data views, which encompasses their data security model. New Studio component for graphically building plug-in definitions, enabling Data Discovery and Query Builder application customization to a specific environment. Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act Data Discovery and Query Builder is capable, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. Security, auditability, and control Data Discovery and Query Builder uses the security and auditability features of both the DB2 database and the WebSphere Application Server. Data Discovery and Query Builder further provides extensive features for plugging in customized security, auditability, and control within the context of its abstraction layer. As an example, DB2 can be used to grant or revoke authority to a table containing test values, while Data Discovery and Query Builder can be used to grant or revoke authority to a logical specific test field containing hemoglobin test values. Security and auditability features of the Data Discovery and Query Builder are: Plug-in support allowing customized security based on the action taken (login, query execution), the user doing it, and the objects used (database values, analysis routines, and so on). Default implementations of the security component for common cases that can be augmented and extended to specific environments. Controllable data access to the row or column level. Customizable audit logs that can be queried, in turn, through Data Discovery and Query Builder. Data Discovery and Query Builder V2.1 includes a full featured integrated auditor provided in addition to the existing customizable audit support. This predefined auditor captures extensive information about the use of the Data Discovery and Query Builder system right out of the box without additional customization. The security functions of Data Discovery and Query Builder can either replace or augment the security, auditability, and control features of DB2 and WebSphere.
