1 Summer Institute 2013 Madison Area Technical College Here is your chance to work with our faculty as you get ready to implement dual credit in your classroom. At the Institute you will understand your role as a dual credit instructor, activate your faculty account, explore the variety of resources available to you as a dual credit teacher, tour Blackboard - and that s just the opening session! From there you will move on to the discipline-specific training with your faculty mentor and you will receive specific help, resources, and guidance to deliver a college course at your high school. There is no cost for this training and where possible we will apply for Viterbo graduate credits but we won t have confirmation until closer to the training and it will not apply to all sessions. A completed registration packet must include the registration form (page 5), job application (pages 6-7), and a copy of your DPI license. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and registrations after May 31 will not be allowed. Attendance at the Summer Institute is required for all teachers implementing a dual credit course. Registration will close on May 31. Accounting 1 Principles ( ), June 19 Introduction to the field of accounting. The accounting cycle of journalizing transactions, posting, adjusting and closing entries, as well as the preparation of accounting statements is emphasized for service industries and merchandising concerns. Details of accounting for cash and receivables are studied. An introduction to a computerized accounting system is also included. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 20 participants. College & Career Transitions Madison Area Technical College 211 North Carroll St. Madison, WI Basic Shielded Metal Arc Welding ( ), June Students in this course will develop manipulative skills on all types of joints in the flat position using shielded metal arc welding electrodes on mild steel. Welding techniques used for structural, pipe, and maintenance welding will be developed. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 15 participants. Biotech Applications ( ), June 17 Provides a broad introduction to biotechnology including the scientific basis of the technologies and their historical development with an emphasis on current applications in the areas of agriculture, medicine, forensics and the environment. Dual credit is available for sophomores through seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 20 participants. 1
2 Biotech Career Seminar ( ), June 18 Includes a discussion of national, local, and state biotechnology industries, career options, the ethical, legal and societal issues raised by the use of biotechnology and the regulatory agencies that oversee the industry. Dual credit is available for sophomores through seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 20 participants. Business Technology Software (Microsoft 2010 applications), June 17 This training session will cover the curriculum covered in our beginning business technology courses. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors only. A minimum of 5 and a maximum of 25 participants. Access Beginning ( ), Introduction to Access database software. Plan, create, edit, save, print and manage data; modify a database structure; relate tables; find, filter, query and sort data in tables; create forms and reports. Excel Beginning ( ), Introduction to Excel spreadsheet software. Create, edit, save, format, print, perform calculations, copy/move text and formulas, create charts, create complex formulas and expand use of functions. PowerPoint Beginning ( ), Introduction to PowerPoint presentation software. Create, edit, save, and print a presentation. Insert clip art, apply animation and slide transition effects, import text, customize background and bullets, create a table and a chart, create a WordArt object, and create a Webpage from a PowerPoint slide. Publisher Beginning ( ), Course focuses on the 2010 version of the MS Publisher software. Word Beginning ( ), Introduction to Microsoft's word processing software. Create, edit, save, format and print basic documents; cut/copy/paste and find/replace text; apply font styles and effects; add bullets and numbering; work with tabs and indents; align text; apply borders and shading; use wizards and templates to produce documents; insert headers/footers; apply different formatting to document sections; create columns; insert Clip Art. Create and format tables, modify rows and columns, perform calculations, sort table data, customize tables. College Success (college transfer) ( ), August 7-9 and This course provides learners with strategies to develop and apply essential soft skills (such as selfmotivation, self-awareness, and self-management) along with study skills (note taking, test taking, reading, etc.) related to success in college and in life. This course is includes a significant writing component given its inward-focus. Teachers teaching this course must have a master s degree. If you will be implementing College Success at your high school during they school year, you are expected to attend the mentor training on August 7-9 and the Learning to Learn Camp on August Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Learning to Learn Camp participation is limited to the first eight (8) individuals with emphasis being placed on those starting in fall Elementary Algebra with Applications ( ), June This course offers traditional algebra topics with applications. Learners develop algebraic problem solving techniques needed for technical problem solving and for more advanced algebraic studies. Topics include linear equations, exponents, polynomials, rational expressions, and roots and radicals. Successful completion of this course prepares learners to succeed in technical mathematics courses. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 20 participants. Fashion Analysis ( ), June 17 Students work with the elements and principles of design as they relate to fashion promotion and products. Forecasting, creativity and a grasp of the influences and sources of design are major components of the course. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 15 participants. 2
3 Health Care Career Exploration ( ), June This course is designed to introduce students to a wide variety of health careers. The nature and scope of the profession including the educational and physical requirements, as well as personal characteristics of each career are discussed. The healthcare system with a historical perspective is presented. The students are introduced to ethical, legal, and safety considerations in healthcare. The student will investigate career security strategies and tools. Dual credit is available for any high school student. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 15 participants. Health, Safety & Nutrition (ECE) ( ), June This course examines the topics of health, safety and nutrition within the context of the early childhood educational setting. Course competencies include: follow governmental regulations and professional standards as they apply to health, safety and nutrition; provide a safe, healthy, and nutritionally sound early childhood program; adhere to child abuse and neglect mandates; apply Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) risk reduction strategies; incorporate health, safety and nutrition concepts into the children's curriculum. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 20 participants. Intro to CAD - Architecture ( ), June Major emphasis is placed on learning the basic commands necessary to complete two-dimensional construction drawings for the architectural community. Approximately 50% of the course is spent on lecture/ demonstrations concerning software commands and procedures, while 50% of the course is spent developing operating skills. A basic understanding of Windows and file management is covered within the course. The current version of AutoCAD is used as the teaching tool. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 20 participants. Intro to College Writing & Reading Strategies ( and ), June This course introduces basic principles of composition (including organization, development, and coherence) in paragraphs and essays, and teaches various strategies needed to read college-level material (including identifying main ideas and supporting details, highlighting and annotating a text, summarizing, and making inferences). The course emphasizes a process approach to writing and aims to develop the critical thinking and reading skills necessary to be successful college readers and writers. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors (although the course is most suitable for seniors). Minimum of 5 and maximum of 20 participants. IT Essentials ( ), June Required for all IT Essentials teachers. This course presents a comprehensive overview of computer fundamentals and an introduction to operating systems using the CISCO IT Essentials curriculum. Students completing through hands-on activities and labs, this course will be able to work with internal components of a computer, assemble a computer system, work with the basics of an operating system and get exposure to computer tasks such as installation, configuration, diagnosing, preventive maintenance and basic networking and operating systems. CompTIA's A+ Certification is a widely accepted IT industry standard certification for PC technology. This course prepares students for 2012 CompTIA's A+ Essentials exam (CompTIA A+ exam ). This course is a fundamental course for many of our IT programs and is critically important to student success. A major objective of the summer training class is to complete the requirements to become a CISCO certified instructor and have access to the online curriculum and support. CISCO has updated their online portal to NetSpace and updated the IT Essentials curriculum to version 5.0. The training will explore the new portal and the new elements of the IT Essentials curriculum. In that regard it is required for the teachers registering for this session to be concurrently enrolled in our IT Essentials course or a previous version 4.1 instructor. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 20 participants 3
4 Machine Tool 1A ( ), August 5-7 Introduces the basic concepts and skills using engine lathes, power saws, drill presses and bench applications. Emphasizes safety and proper operation of tools and machines, speeds, feeds, cutting tools, tool geometry, tool grinding and work-holding devices. Stresses dimensional accuracy, finish and quality as well as team-building and work ethics. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 15 participants. Marketing Principles ( ), June 19 This foundation course introduces students to the marketing process and how it operates in today's dynamic organizations. The entire marketing mix is examined on a broad scale. Topics include: market segmentation and targeting strategies, market research, consumer behavior, product development, pricing policies, distribution, and an overview of promotion. This basic course provides a comprehensive overview of the exciting world of marketing. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 25 participants. Medical Terminology ( ), used in a variety of degree programs, June Focuses on the component parts of medical terms: prefixes, suffixes and word roots. Students practice formation, analysis, and reconstruction of terms. Emphasis is on spelling, word analysis definition, and pronunciation. Introduction to operative, diagnostic, therapeutic and symptomatic terminology of all body systems, as well as systemic and surgical terminology, is included. This course is a fundamental course for many of our health-related programs and is critically important to student success. In that regard it is required for the teachers registering for this session to have completed our Medical Terminology class. Due to limited capacity, this session will be limited to 5 school districts; however, if you want to attend as a team you can. Priority will be given to those schools offering dual credit during the school year. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Woods 1A ( ), June Introduces the learner to the operation of traditional woodworking equipment. Students perform numerous exercises to gain familiarity with portable power tools and industrial woodworking machinery while building their skills and familiarity with wood. Units include layout, sawing, surfacing, boring, sanding and assembly. If the demand justifies it, a second session of training will be offered. Dual credit is available for juniors and seniors. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 12 participants. 4
