7 Chapter 1 Market Segmentation FC SAN Components FC SAN Extenders The segmentation of the storage network infrastructure market recognizes the expected emergence and growth of products based on the Small Computer Systems Interface Over IP (iscsi) protocol and InfiniBand architecture (IBA) and products that bridge iscsi and IBA to Fibre Channel (FC) storage area networks (SANs). The market segments are: FC SAN components FC SAN extenders iscsi initiators iscsi-fc bridge products IBA-FC bridge products Complete market segmentation and definitions are provided here as they will be used in a future forecast document. Market data for 2002 will be presented only for the FC SAN components segment. The overall market for FC SAN extenders for 2002 will be included as part of the upcoming forecast. Revenue for the remaining segments were not sufficient to allow accurate data collection. FC SAN components comprise hubs and switching products that interconnect multiple servers and storage devices through FC links in a SAN and components at the SAN periphery host bus adapters (HBAs) and storage routers that provide the transition from FC to connected devices. Hub products include entry hubs and managed hubs. The FC switching products market is divided into fabric switches, core fabric switches and directors. A product category integrated fabric switches previously reported separately, has been combined with fabric switches. Core fabric switches are grouped with directors as core switch products reflecting the similarity of deployment in large SANs. Previous forecasts have included core fabric switches in a group designated as high availabilty core switch products. The different designation for the purpose of reporting market statistics reflects the fact that core fabric switches delivered in2002didnotmeetthefullrequirementsofhighavailability.hbasarefurther classified by bus connection into Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI), PCI extended (PCI-X) and Sun bus (Sbus) categories. FC SAN extenders are devices that enable port-to-port transport of FC frames between physically separate FC SANs over other networks or special point-topoint links. They are classified as SAN-LAN, SAN-metropolitan-area network (MAN) and SAN-WAN extenders based on range of extension. iscsi Initiators iscsi initiators appear to the host as storage adapters (HBAs) with full processing of the storage stack or network interface cards (NICs). NIC-based initiators with varying degrees of TCP/IP hardware acceleration, denoted as other initiators, typically require host involvement for implementation of the storage stack Gartner, Inc. and/or its Affiliates. 8 2 Storage Network Infrastructure FC SAN Components Guide, 2002 iscsi-fc Bridge Products IBA-FC Bridge Products iscsi-fc bridge products are classified as FC-iSCSI gateways or iscsi-fc converters depending on the bridging process. Gateways provide connection of iscsi-enabled servers to the FC SAN and all connected devices; converters provide connection to individual ports on native FC storage devices. Current products are input/output (I/O) bridges providing IBA server nodes access to storage devices on an FC SAN Gartner, Inc. and/or its Affiliates. All Rights Reserved. 15 May 2003
9 Chapter 2 Definitions Disk Storage Systems External hardware redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID) controllerbased storage is a RAID-based storage solution in which the hardware RAID controller and the disk drives are housed separately from the server in a highavailability external RAID enclosure. The external hardware RAID controllerbased storage system may be attached directly to the server(s) or to a SAN. FC SAN Components and FC SAN Extenders Product definitions are as follows: Entry hub A device that incorporates the elements of an FC-Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) in a single multi-port unit capable of connecting two attached devices at any one time with FC links in a star configuration. Negotiation of access to the loop and limitation to connection of two devices at any one time with the resultant bandwidth constraint remain the same as for a physical loop. However, a hub can automatically bypass a problem or nonoperating node and allow connection directly between operating nodes. Interconnect products Hubs, switches or directors Managed hub A hub device that, together with software, implements network management technology to provide topology and hub status along with loop and hub diagnostics. Access negotiation and bandwidth conditionsarethesameasforentryhubs. Switch A device that provides multiple simultaneous interconnections between pairs of ports with the resultant increase in total bandwidth. Switches require and provide management capability. Switches are available for fabric interconnection or implementation of the FC-AL protocol. The latter provides the full bandwidth of a switch while allowing interoperation in a relatively less complex installation with devices qualified for FC-AL protocol. Access hub A device capable of supporting multiple concurrent switched FC-AL loops Director A high port count (64 or more in 2002) switch product that provides centralized management, redundancy of active support elements and automatic failover. A director is a highly available stand-alone unit, while switches may require unit redundancy for similar levels of availability. FC-SCSI storage router A device that provides for bidirectional connectivity of legacy SCSI storage devices not designed to accommodate FC connection to FC SANs HBA A circuit board attached to the computer, which, together with the bus, provides a communication path between the central processing unit and peripheral devices. FC HBAs support more than one protocol, such as IP or SCSI. HBAs support a particular bus architecture and, together with software tailored to the operating system, can support multiple operating systems and topologies Gartner, Inc. and/or its Affiliates. 10 4 Storage Network Infrastructure FC SAN Components Guide, 2002 iscsi-related Components High-availability core switching products Switching products defined by the following characteristics: Port counts of 64 or greater High availability, typically percent or greater, requiring as a minimum internal redundancy and the capability of hot firmware upgrades and downgrades Modularity of architecture that allows functions supplemental to that of high-availability switching Availability of interoperable edge switches Core switch products Products with the attributes of high-availability core switching products but not having the capability of hot code activation for firmware upgrades FC SAN extender A device that enables port-to-port transport of FC frames between physically separate FC SANs over other networks or special point-to-point links FC SAN-LAN extender An extender designed for use over LANs whose rangeislessthan10kilometers,typicallynotrequiringspecialflowcontrol buffer credits FC SAN-MAN extender An extender designed for use over MANs or WANs whose range is limited to a few hundred kilometers requiring substantially greater buffer credits but not requiring other special flow control to achieve full link performance. Extension over dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) links that provide optical transport of various protocol frames without modification from point to point is treated as a special case not specific to FC SANs. FC SAN-WAN extender An extender designed for use over WANs whose range exceeds a few hundred kilometers requiring special treatment of flow control to enable full available link performance Product definitions are as follows: FC SAN iscsi gateway A bridge between FC- and TCP/IP-based networks providing translation between FC and iscsi protocols iscsi-fc converter A module for converting an FC target port to an IP port supporting the iscsi protocol iscsi initiator A device, typically an expansion board, capable of translating between CPU SCSI storage commands and the iscsi protocol and providing the physical interface to the TCP/IP-based network iscsi HBA An iscsi initiator that provides for processing of the storage stack and TCP/IP flow control, the latter typically with hardware acceleration Other iscsi initiators Initiators based on NICs with varying degrees of TCP/IP hardware acceleration that utilize the CPU for implementation of the storage stack 2003 Gartner, Inc. and/or its Affiliates. 13 Chapter 3 Market Statistics Methodology Market statistics derive from company-specific models that correlate in a consistent manner information, such as survey data, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings, company press releases and company briefing material. Review of preliminary data by industry experts and other generally reliable sources serves to highlight and resolve any apparent discrepancies. FC SAN components are sold primarily, through indirect channels, to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers or other indirect channels. To the extent possible, revenue is reported as revenue to the manufacturer of the product. Restatement of Brocade Revenue for 2000 and 2001 Total revenue for Brocade Communications fabric switches for 2000 and 2001 has been reduced by the amount of unbundled software revenue reported separately in the "2002 Storage Management Software Market Share," HWST-WW-MS Revenue for 2000 and 2001 was reduced by $13 million and $33.2 million, respectively. This adjustment forces changes in a number of entries associated with total FC SAN component hardware and with details of the switching product and fabric switch segments. In these categories, numbers will differ from those reported in the market statistics for Revenue for Brocade and McDATA is treated equivalently no unbundled software revenue is included in this report. Assignment of Unit Prices for Certain Special Cases For certain vendors, it is not possible to obtain revenue numbers associated with unit shipments. In these cases, the reported price is the same as the average price for the product class as determined from vendors that do report revenue along with units. Several specific instances include: Product manufactured by vendor selling directly to end user Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and Compaq (in previous years) provided, as market information, unit shipments of HBA manufactured internally. For these products, neither internal transfer price nor average price to enduserisavailable.assigningaveragepricetotheseunitscapturesthe contribution to the total HBA market that would exist if these same products were supplied by a noncaptive vendor. Hardware products supplied without accompanying software HP provided drivers for HBA cards supplied by Agilent Technologies. All of theimputedvalueofthesehbaswasassignedtoagilent, whichmanufactured the hardware rather than crediting HP for the value of drivers. While it is perhaps possible to ascertain the actual revenue paid to Agilent, assigning revenue partially to Agilent for hardware and partially to HP for software adds no clarity to the market statistics. Comparison of market shares among companies with substantially different direct sales ratio Whenever a company has significant direct sales, the unit price used in determining reported revenue is the average market price for products sold through indirect channels determined by peer companies. Effectively, market share is determined mostly by unit share, with some price differential estimated, taking all known other factors into consideration. This specifically applies to Inrange Technologies and McDATA in the director segment Gartner, Inc. and/or its Affiliates. All Rights Reserved. 7
