What do these people have in common? 2 2
Reflections In the 80s, I remember people saying computers were a fad in education. It's 2013 and there are more computing devices than ever. They are tools which are used in every occupation Technological advances happen rapidly and school systems need to incorporate financial planning as they do for other institutional infrastructures 3 3
Why do students and teachers use computing devices and access to the Internet? It is today's tool for these critical skills: LEARNING AND INNOVATION SKILLS Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Creativity and Innovation Communication and Collaboration 4 4
Looking back L-S was ahead of the curve. Planning, allocating financing, procuring equipment, , Internet access and professional development was all in place. Educational technology was a focused initiative. L-S in the Information Age was a course and Professional development model. Many schools came to visit. Devices were on a 3-5 year replacement cycle L-S was on par with other schools. The focus was on the new building L-S had an infusion of 1.2 million dollars with the new building project. No planning or financial allocation for the future. 400% more equipment, no additional staffing, limited professional development It is time to refresh. If $200K was put aside annually it would create a 5-6 year cycle which could be used for network, devices, servers, internet access, or cloud solutions. Budget cuts to district technology. Decline of resources compared to other schools. Not keeping up with new networking protocols and equipment. Wifi network insufficient. Aging network, servers, devices, yet more need than ever for use of resources for both classes, administration, state mandates and maintenance of the building (HVAC, lighting, security, etc) Budget cuts continue (25% over 8 years) Behind the curve. Mobile devices enter the landscape. Network devices and protocol a decade old. Many schools have kept up with network innovations and are entering either 1:1 or BYOD initiatives. These initiatives prepare and educate students to use the technological tools in a meaningful way. 5 5
What does the Institution need to keep up with Educational Technology? The Physical Time & $$$$$ Infrastructure - Network Backbone & $ K Wi-Fi window.state.tx.us Time & $$$$$ The Invisible - Internet Provider - Bandwidth 30K annually 6 6
2003 Have you made any upgrades in the last years? Are you still using a cable modem with AOL as your provider? 2003 No networking 2013 infrastructure upgrades in last 10 years! No networking LSRHS in 10 years- it feels like the old 56k access 7 7
Technology in Typical household 2003 Have you made any upgrades in the last years? Internet connection-dial up modem(cable?) #devices 1 #rooms with computers 1 #users (2 adults) Type of device - desktop Data plan- monthly Uses-word processing, spreadsheets, , Internet File storage - floppies, hard drive 8 Wireless router 6-8 devices Unlimited rooms in house dependent upon placement of router Users-Adult/children 2-6 desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone, Data plan and costs have increasedupload/download speeds higher Uses-More - video, media, voice Cloud solutions 8
LSRHS No networking infrastructure upgrades in last 10 years! External/Internal networking(communication closets -switches) #new devices 1200 #rooms-126 classes, 29 office, large areas-aud, lecture, library, Caf, Gyms #users 1900 Type of device - desktop, laptops relying upon Ethernet Minimal Wi-fi(20 APs) Uses-word processing, spreadsheets, , programming, digital imaging, graphics, web publishing, database, scheduling, state reports, grades, film editing, architectural design No changes in switches-feels like 56 K modem 400 devices (1-3 years old), 400 devices(4-8years old), 200 devices (9 years old), 200 devices recycled Still trying to move data throughout building with original network configuration Users-Approximately the same #but using more frequently for more classes with material on web pages and wikis desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone,- frustrated by age of devices -users bring in own Uses- larger files Some servers replaced in last 5 years but doubling up classes File storage - file servers 9 9
LSRHS is a large institution 3 buildings 10 floors 126 Classroom 29 Offices Auditorium Lecture hall Cafeteria Library Gymnasium Users 383,000 Square Feet 10 10
Network Overview 21 Wiring Closets 11 11
What are the uses? Computer - Programming, Creative Computing, Web Publishing, JAVA programming Counseling - Naviance, ipass English/History- Research, Presentations, Journals, Wikis, Blogs, student ipad pilot program FATA - Media, Film, Digital Photography, Songwriting, Architectural Design Science/Math - Web based simulations, NASA, Interactive Physics, Virtual Labs, Interactive White Board, Topics Courses, Presentations, Java Applets Language - Web based translations, presentations, interactive white boards, video conferencing Library - How to research effectively using on-line databases-using Epson Brightlinkcreates interactive whiteboard environment Special Education - Assistive technologies -speech to text, audio books, ebooks, use of mobile devices Wellness - Project based work, health information - up to date information All disciplines - Wikis, Web sites - learning curve and time investment for teachers 12 12
Mandated State reports Scheduling Grades Electronic transcript transmission Cafeteria Administrative needs Business Office-Payroll, financial systems On line testing - federal, state mandated- THE FUTURE MCAS- PARCC-Partnership for Assessment and Readiness for College and Careers-computer based assessments Uses outside classes - Town Meetings, Adult Ed, outside groups renting building facilities 13 13
Eighty two (82%) of teachers use computer technology with students at least once a week There would be a higher % if the network was functioning and there was more reliable access to the Internet 14 14
15 15
Management and Storage There are servers which manage functions of the network and servers which store data. When the network is updated and Internet access is increased, cloud based solutions can be explored for servers which act as storage. The cloud based services also cost money. This would be a cost shifting not necessarily a cost savings 16 16
Accessibility & Devices in the hands of all users It's important to allow users to bring in their own devices AND for the school to supply devices for staff members to do their jobs and students to do their job which is learning! cs3-devices-1.jpg notion-ink-tablet-260.jpg Finances are needed to create a 5 year replacement cycle 17 17
Professional Development for Teachers, Admins, All Staff How to use the device and applications How to use it in terms of the function of the staff member s job Time & $$$$$ If teacher - how to incorporate in existing curriculum, creating new curriculum opportunities Who trains? Who trains the trainer? Time & $$$$ 18 18
getgoingnc.com Constantly Changing! Time & $$$$ Training & Curriculum Time & $$$$ Time Passes - New Technology! Time to start the cycle again! Student learning access to 19 info Network Infrastructure Time & $$$$ Management, Storage, Backup Time & $$$$ Devices-Accessibility 19
Essential elements to create the opportunities needed for our students to succeed in today's society Robust network infrastructure - including Wi-fi Adequate Internet Bandwidth Management of network and bandwidth Access to computing devices - users bring their own and school supplies resources for others Professional development/training - for all staff members(faculty, admins, all support staff) Appropriate educational technology staffing 20 20
Recap A robust technological infrastructure provides the tools for teaching and learning in today's society Network Renovation - $500-$600K(fiber and wifi, vlan network protocol) Includes training of L-S network admin Increased bandwidth - $30K annually - provided within existing operating budget Creating better financial access/flow for next steps - servers, cloud services, devices, future upgrades to network - $200K annually 21 21
Technology is not a one-time investment It needs to be budgeted annually It is not a fad It is not going away Every aspect of the educational institution depends upon it It is part of the infrastructure - heat, electricity, water - no one questions that these items need funding annually 22 22
