3 Vision for N-Wave A consolidated agency-wide network resource that meets NOAA s research connectivity requirements and where/when appropriate, can supplement NOAA s operational connectivity requirements. High-speed intra-noaa connectivity at layer 3 Secure, private, flexible, high-bandwidth virtual circuit capabilities Positioning to be to able to provide high-bandwidth connectivity between NOAA research and the R&E community Possibility of providing future commodity access for NOAA

4 Strategy Leverage existing relationships NOAA s traditional research partners are the universities work with this community Partner with the RONs for end-site connectivity Partner with the GRNOC at Indiana University to tie the systems together Challenge: Differing business models RONs, Backbone providers, Government Challenge: Hiding complexity from end users Challenge: Balancing differing expectations and levels of reliability

5 N-Wave Design Basics Designed primarily for climate research/hpcs Initially 10 Gbps mesh, 100G upgradeable Internet2 DWDM waves for core Waves on various R&E RONs for access Built using Ethernet only and MPLS L2/3VPNs Redundancy/resiliency, but best-effort SLAs Instrumentation/test servers at every site Will be built in stages over a few years

6 Initial Services/Customers Connect NOAA R&D HPCS resources and allow NOAA researchers to access them. OAR and NCEP Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research and National Centers for Environmental Prediction New ARRA funded NOAA peta-scale compute resources at ORNL, in DC area, Boulder, and soon West Virginia Tbytes/day climate model output Satellite data file transfers between 3-4 sites. CLASS NESDIS 25 Tbytes/day satellite data storage Most initial services will have a dedicated VPN.

14 IPv6, Multicast, and QoS No initial multicast support since there was no requirement/interest identified. Future? IPv6 addresses will be assigned in most L3VPNs. External peerings, when supported, are planned to be able to support both v4 and v6. Operational needs take precedence and are primarily v4; but planning everything as v6-ready as possible. QoS two classes will be supported initially Best-effort and scavenger

15 GRNOC Operations Management Implementation The usual back-end toolset - DB, rancid, nagios, etc. Run on completely separate set of servers. Completely separate bastion hosts with its own separate two-factor authentication mechanism. Some of the same public-facing tools, but some may be by password only. Separate project in existing GRNOC ticketing system, but same servers and software. NOAA personnel have access to their DB and ticketing system project, and can be assigned tickets.

17 Progress so far is on track! Interim circuit Princeton-ORNL is complete and operational; will go full production in the coming week. All core-site s colo and power is complete. Chicago equipment installation is complete. Atlanta equipment installation next week. Plan to complete initial build before September.
