19 BS 6396: 2008 BS 6396: 2008 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN OFFICE FURNITURE AND EDUCATIONAL FURNITURE Below are some key poits to be cosidered from the sales poit of view. This is a simplified guide ad does ot represet the full stadard. It should be oted that BS 6396 is a stadard relatig to the istallatio of electrical systems as a whole ad is ot a specific electrical accessory stadard. Hece although products may comply with the relevat clauses of the full stadard, full compliace with the stadard itself requires correct istallatio of the system ad proper costructio of the furiture. It is also worthwhile to ote that the scope of BS6396 is electrical systems i furiture coected to the buildig electrical supply by a 13A fused plug. With specific regard to the electrical system the followig should be oted: No more the six sockets allowed per supply. The electrical system shall be rated for a total ormal load of 13A No sigle item of equipmet of a rated voltage higher tha 250v or rated curret higher voltage 5A shall be coected to the furiture. For multiple socket outlets fuse protectio must be used for the idividual sockets. Observe the stated fuse ratig o the appliace. Power supply cord must ot exceed 2M i visible legth o exit from the desk clamp Esure cable routig, system earthig ad geeral mechaical cofiguratio coforms to the stated requiremets. The fial istallatio must be subjected to a electrical test. (separate iformatio is available regardig this) Cable must be clamped at poit of etry to furiture ad/or at both eds where cables coect separate movig parts of furiture. All extraeous metalwork should be earthed. Items of Office Furiture iteded to be earthed shall be coected to the earth termial of the Power Module.
