1 ICS Reget Commuicatios Modules RS-232, RS-422 ad RS-485 (T3150A) Issue 1, March, 06 Commuicatios modules provide a serial commuicatios iterface betwee the cotroller ad exteral equipmet. Commuicatios modules are commoly used to coect the cotroller to the computer ruig the WINTERPRET applicatio, serial priters, ma-machie iterfaces, distributed cotrol system gateways, ad other peer-to-peer cotrollers. Features Two isolated serial ports per module. Supports RS-232, RS-422 ad RS-485 stadards. Reget R2, Guarded Peer-Lik, ad Modbus protocols. Frot pael idicators o each module show commuicatios status ad trasmit/receive activity. TÜV certified for safety, Risk Class 5. Module Operatio A block diagram of a typical commuicatios module is show i Figure 1. Commuicatios modules are serial receiver-trasmitters that provide a electrical iterface for RS-232, RS-422, ad RS-485 commuicatios equipmet. Each commuicatios module receives power from all three of the processor modules. A power-sharig circuit i each of the commuicatios modules receives the power from the three Idustrial Cotrol Services 1

2 processor modules ad combies it through a diode OR powersharig circuit. This esures that if oe processor module's power supply fails, the commuicatios module will cotiue to operate by drawig power from the two remaiig power supplies, ad the system's commuicatios fuctios are maitaied. Additioal isolated power coverters provide isolated power to the two serial ports. This isolatio provides protectio from exteral commuicatios cable sigal oise ad groudig from affectig module operatios. Figure 1. Block Diagram of Commuicatios Module. 3 every millisecod to read characters from or write characters to the commuicatios module. Whe the processor modules read characters from the commuicatios module, the commuicatios module seds characters through triplicated bus drivers to the processor Safetybus. The processor modules vote this triplicated data ad perform commuicatios processig. Whe the processor modules write data to the commuicatios module, the triplicated data is voted by the commuicatios modules ad set to the dual UART where it is the trasmitted out the associated port. The commuicatios modules two serial ports operate idepedetly ad ca both be cofigured differetly. Electrical cofiguratio is doe by chagig jumper settigs to select poit-to-poit or multidrop cofiguratios. The ports ca be used to support a wide variety of fuctios icludig Reget R2 protocol, Modbus protocol, ASCII output, ad Guarded Peer-Lik commuicatios. The WINTERPRET applicatio is used to cofigure the appropriate port fuctios ad specify baud rate, data format, parity, ad ode umber. Testig ad Diagostics The modules triplicated Safetybus iterface esures that o failure i the module will effect the operatio of the Reget system or other module. Extesive fault detectio ad auciatio of critical redudat circuits helps esure that processors will ot accept erroeous data from a faulty module. Each type of commuicatios module has a uique idetificatio code that is read by the cotroller. This code lets the cotroller kow what type of module is istalled i each commuicatios slot. If a module is removed ad replaced with a module of a differet type the processors will idicate a COMM error. The processor modules perform backgroud diagostic checks o the module to test bus driver circuits ad check the commuicatios module ID codes. 4 are checked by the processor modules ormal commuicatios processig. Failures result i a COMM module error idicatio at the processor modules ad a COMM error at the commuicatios module. Frot Pael Figure 2 shows the physical features of the commuicatios modules. The frot pael of each module cotais idicators showig overall module health, ad the trasmit ad receive status of each chael. I additio to the frot pael idicators, each commuicatios module has two DB-25 coectors (female). COMM Idicator This red ad gree LED pair idicates the overall health of the module. Durig ormal operatio the gree LED is o. If a commuicatios module fault is detected, the red LED turs o ad the gree LED turs off. Trasmit/Receive Idicators These gree LEDs are coected directly to the serial sigal lies ad flash while data are beig trasmitted or received. The TX LED flashes as data are set from the module, ad the RX LED flashes as data are received by the module. 4 Idustrial Cotrol Services

6 Applicatio Commuicatios Port Coectios Each commuicatios port has a DB-25, female coector o the frot of the module. The RS232 ad RS422/485 sigals are iterally coected to the DB-25 coector pis as show i Table 1. Refer to Figures 3 through 5 for recommeded commuicatios cable requiremets ad coectios. Table 1. 7 cofiguratios, oe usig RS232 coectios for short distaces ad the other usig RS422 coectios for loger distaces. Figure 4 illustrates multidrop coectios betwee 2 or more Regets ad a PC or other commuicatios device supportig Reget R2 or Modbus protocols. For more iformatio o usig the Serial Ports commad see Sectio 4, Workig with Projects, i the Reget User s Guide. Comm Supports the Reget R2 protocol for poit-to-poit commuicatios betwee the Reget ad the computer ruig the WINTERPRET applicatio. Some third-party MaMachie-Iterface (MMI) products ad DCS gateways may also support poit-to-poit commuicatios usig the Reget R2 protocol. Multidrop Supports Reget R2 protocol for multidropped Regets coected to a PC ruig the WINTERPRET applicatio (or other third-party supportig products ad gateways). Ports cofigured for multidrop commuicatios require a ode umber. ASCII Used by the Reget to trasmit ASCII output messages to exteral serial equipmet such as priters ad VDUs. ASCII output messages are programmed usig the ASCII output elemet i ladder logic fuctio blocks. 10 Idustrial Cotrol Services

11 Net Master/Net Slave Used by the Reget for Guarded Peer-Lik commuicatios to other multidrop Regets. These ports require a ode umber. Modbus Supports coectio to exteral Modbus commuicatios equipmet that acts as a Modbus Master (the Reget is a Modbus Slave). A Modbus port supports the Modbus RTU protocol. Modbus ports ca be used i poit-to-poit or multidrop cofiguratios. These ports require a ode umber. Jumper Settigs for Poit-to-Poit ad Multidrop Commuicatios Each port ca be idepedetly cofigured for poit-to-poit or multidrop coectios. Whe shipped from the factory, jumpers o-board the commuicatios module are set for poit-to-poit commuicatios. These settigs are appropriate whe a sigle Reget is coected to a PC or other commuicatios equipmet. The port defiitio ca be COMM, ASCII or Modbus (poit-to-poit) as described above. Whe the port defiitio is Multidrop, Net Master, Net Slave or Modbus (multidrop) the the jumper settigs o the module must be chaged. Chagig Jumper Settigs The jumper settigs o the module are used to determie how the trasmit lies of the serial ports are cotrolled ad also determie if iteral termiatio, pull-up ad pull-dow resistors are coected to the serial lies. Table 2 shows the proper jumper settigs for poit-to-poit, multidrop (Reget R2 or Modbus) ad Guarded Peer-Lik commuicatios. Mar-06 11

Each termiatio resistor coects a iteral 120 Ohm resistor across a specific differetial pair ad the pull-up ad pull-dow resistors coect a 1K Ohm resistor betwee each sigal lie ad +5V or Comm. These resistors should be coected oly at the ed odes of the multidrop commuicatio etwork. Nodes i the middle should ot have these jumpers coected. Figure 7 idetifies the sigal lies, resistors ad jumpers associated with each port. Oly the trasmit (TX+ ad TX-) ad receive (RX+ ad RX-) sigal pairs are show. Other jumpers ad resistors for sigal pairs CTS, RTS, DTR ad DSR are also located o the module but they are ot used by serial commuicatios for the Reget ad their jumper positios are ot importat. Note: If desired, you ca istall the termiatio, pull-up ad pulldow resisters exteral to the commuicatios module at the eds of the multidrop etwork. I this case positio the jumpers i each commuicatios module for a middle 12 Middle Idustrial Cotrol Services

13 Reget. With each commuicatios module s jumper settigs the same, module replacemet is simpler. A sigle spare module ca replace ay commuicatios module without the eed to positio the jumpers specifically for ed or middle Regets before replacemet. Refer to the commuicatios port pi umbers show i Figure 7 to determie the proper exteral coectio of the resistors. Mar-06 13

15 Module Removal ad Disassembly Usig a small slotted screwdriver, loose the retaiig screw ear the top of the commuicatios module. Pull ope both removal levers o the frot of the module. The module will disegage from the cotroller chassis. Whe it is disegaged, carefully slide the module out of the cotroller chassis. With the module removed, use a #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws from the left side of the module. Remove the four Phillips screws from the right side of the module (see Figure 8). 16 Refer to Table 2 to idetify the proper jumper settigs for your applicatio s commuicatios cofiguratio. Positio the jumpers as eeded o the module. Figure 9 shows the locatios of the jumpers o board the module. Note: Whe shipped from the factory, o jumpers are istalled o E131, E132, E133, E231, E232 ad E233. For multidrop cofiguratios you will eed two jumpers for each port (such as E131 ad E133 for port 1). The default factory settigs iclude jumpers positioed at E104, E106, E114, E116, E124, E126, E204, E206, E214, E216, E224, ad E226. These jumpers coect termiatio, pull-up ad pull-dow resistors for the CTS ad DSR sigal pairs for port 1 ad 2. Sice the CTS ad DSR sigals are ot actually used by the module, you ca remove jumpers istalled at ay of these positios i order to istall them as eeded for E131, E132, E133, E231, E232 or E Idustrial Cotrol Services

18 From the right side of the module, alig the four holes i the prited circuit board wit four metal stadoffs. Isert ad tighte the four screws removed from the right side of the module. Tur the module over ad istall the two screws removed from the left side of the module. Visually ispect the coector at the back of the commuicatios module for bet pis. If ay pis are bet do ot istall the module. Do ot try to straighte bet pis. Retur the module to ICS for replacemet. If the pis are i good coditio, hold the module with both hads ad ope the two module release levers by pullig them toward you. Carefully slide the module ito the chassis. Be careful to keep the module aliged while slidig it straight ito the chassis. The module should mout ito the chassis with a miimum of resistace. If the module does ot mout easily, do ot force it. Remove it ad check it for bet or damaged pis. If the pis look okay, try reistallig the module. Whe the module is almost fully ito the chassis, the release levers will cotact the chassis ad begi to rotate closed. Press the levers closed to seat the module i the chassis. The top release lever o each commuicatios module is switched. Whe the lever is i the ope positio, the module is disabled. If the module does ot seem to have seated correctly, ope the release levers ad getly pull it back off the seat ad out of the chassis. Check for bet or damaged pis. If the pis look okay, try reistallig the module. After the module is properly seated, tighte the retaiig screw at the top of the module. Fasteig the retaiig screw will also help esure that top (switched) release lever remais i positio. 18 Idustrial Cotrol Services

19 Maiteace No periodic maiteace or calibratio is required for the digital iput modules. There are o user replaceable parts iside these modules. Failed modules ca be hot replaced. If the module beig replaced has bee cofigured to support multidrop coectios be sure to check the jumper settigs ad properly cofigure the ew module s jumpers before istallig it. Safety Cosideratios Commuicatios modules are TÜV certified for Risk Class 5 safety applicatios as o-iterferig ad ca be used i a safety system for ormal data acquisitio fuctios. Commuicatios modules are approved for peer-to-peer commuicatios of safety critical data betwee two or more Reget systems i Risk Class 5 safety applicatios. This requires the use of redudat Guarded Peer-Lik commuicatios etworks where the etwork coectios are made o redudat commuicatios modules at each Reget.
