1 Introduction of SU06A The SU06A is a small, robust USB port connectable measurement unit for railway brake system installation, maintenance and analysis (SAP article number: STN 31977) The instrument is the replacement of the SU05A serial data acquisition unit (also known as ModuLab black box). It is designed for ESRA and works together with Knorr-Bremse Service Terminal application ST03A V and newer. The development of SU06A started in February 2005 and the first five pieces (the nullseries) have been delivered to Munich in September The major features of SU06A are: 12, ESRA compatible analog input channels with 16-bit A/D resolution which are organized into 3 isolated channel groups of 4 channels 8 pressure sensor inputs with power supply on LEMO connectors 1 acceleration sensor input 16 optically decoupled digital input channels with ESRA compatible selectable input ranges Configurable sample rate from 1 ms 1 digital output for relay 2 analog outputs for lever simulation (0-10V / 10mA) USB connection to the computer Robust housing To order the SU06A use the SAP article number STN Knorr-Bremse Group 3
2 Device Driver Installation To be able to use the SU06A device with ST03A please first install the proper FTDI device driver (according to your operation system) from the install CD as described in the documentation (see Documentation folder of the install CD, or ST03A Help). Knorr-Bremse Group 4
3 Usage in ST03A The presence of SU06A device is shown by the SU06A is connected icon ( right corner of the status bar: ) in the 3.1 Manual output control This function is available through the Service / SU06A outputs menu as well as through the Service Outputs button on the toolbar: Relay outputs The A (upper one) or the B (lower one) state of the relay switch (max 150V/ 1A): Analog outputs Output voltage can be adjusted between 0-10V (max 10mA load). Knorr-Bremse Group 5
The SU06A outputs functionality offers two different modes: Set mode (force of combination of output values) The configured output value combination is sent to the outputs when the Set button ( ) is pressed. This means that the changes we made within the SU06A outputs dialog will not appear on the outputs automatically. Cyclic setting mode (continuous forcing of output values) The output values are changed immediately after any of the output value fields have been changed in the SU06A outputs dialog. You can enter or terminate this mode by pressing the Cyclic setting button ( ). 3.2 Configuration of SU06A in ST03A V or earlier versions Common properties (Measurement / New configuration / SU06A / Properties button: ) Cycle time The time between two samples in milliseconds. Hardware version Identifies the hardware version of the connected SU06A device. Software version Version number of the embedded software running on SU06A. Interface version Identifies the communication protocol that the ST03A must use to communicate with the connected SU06A device. Knorr-Bremse Group 6
3.2.2 Properties of analog channels (Measurement / New configuration / SU06A / Group of / Properties button ): Input range Selects the allowed input voltage range for each group of analog channels. (Measurement / New configuration / SU06A / Group of / Analog channel / Properties button): Name The name of the analog input channel. Knorr-Bremse Group 7
Alias Transform Factor Offset An alias is a short and unique name for a channel. In mathematical expressions the short alias has to be used. The signal can be transformed into other units. If the value of Transform is 'Yes' then Factor and Offset can be modified. Scaling factor to use when transforming values of the variable. It can be used to increase, decrease or invert the original values of the channel. Offset to use when transforming values of the variable. It can be used to shift the original values of the channel. SI Transformation The signal can be transformed into SI. Following options can be selected: SI Transformation Transform Displayed value No No Yes No 0-15V/150V No Yes e.g. 0-10bar Yes Yes e.g. 0-10bar The figure below shows the process of transformations (each transformation can be omitted): Unit Unit of represented value (e.g. bar, V). Knorr-Bremse Group 8
3.2.3 Properties of digital channels (Measurement / New configuration / SU06A / Digital channels / Properties button ) Comparison level If the input voltage level is greater than the selected comparison level, the digital input value will be TRUE. Otherwise it is FALSE. Knorr-Bremse Group 9
3.2.4 Properties of outputs (Measurement / New configuration / SU06A / Outputs / Output / Properties button ) Channel Name The name of the output. Alias Unit A short and unique name given the output for using in mathematical expressions. Unit of represented value (e.g. bar, V). New Expression Mathematical expression to be evaluated. You can compare measured channels via mathematical expression, or define triggers with boolean expressions, or simply convert ESRA variables to values with physical units. Check button ( ) Tests whether the indicated expression is valid. The result of the test will be displayed in any case. The New Expression field can contain expressions for controlling output channels (analog and relay) depending on values of running measurement. The result of expressions for analog outputs should be between 0 and 10 V (if the result value is greater than 10, it will be rounded down to 10), whereas the result for relay should be logical (TRUE or FALSE, 0 or 1 etc.). For example: sin(t) * SU06A_A01 * 3 where t is the actual time in ms measured from the start of the current measurement, and SU06A_A01 represents the value measured on this channel. Knorr-Bremse Group 10

It can be used to increase, decrease or invert the original values of the channel. Offset to use when transforming values of the variable. It can be used to shift the original values of the channel. Knorr-Bremse Group 13
SI Transformation The signal can be transformed into SI. Following options can be selected: SI Transformation Transform Displayed value No No Yes No 0-15V/150V No Yes e.g. 0-10bar Yes Yes e.g. 0-10bar The figure below shows the process of transformations (each transformation can be omitted): Unit Unit of represented value (e.g. bar, V). Analog filter Analog filter can be set to Off/2Hz/5Hz for only Accelerator sensor (SU06A_AC). X button Delete the actual row in the properties tab. Knorr-Bremse Group 14
3.3.4 Properties of digital channels (Properties tab of SU06A) Comparison level If the input voltage level is greater than the selected comparison level, the digital input value will be TRUE. Otherwise it is FALSE. All SU06A digital channels have only name, original name and description fields. Knorr-Bremse Group 15
3.3.5 Properties of outputs (Properties tab of an SU06A output channel or Outputs folder) The Attached measured channel field can contain expressions or measured channels for controlling output channels (analog and relay) depending on values of running measurement. The result of expressions for analog outputs should be between 0 and 10 V (if the result value is greater than 10, it will be rounded down to 10), whereas the result for relay should be logical (TRUE or FALSE, 0 or 1 etc.). To measure and force outputs create an expression channel in Properties tab of Expressions. Knorr-Bremse Group 16
The user interface is split to two parts, a top and a bottom panel. All visible expression channels of the current channel group are listed in a non-editable table on the bottom panel. This table is used to select an expression to be edited in the top panel. On the top panel all properties of the expression channel can be edited: Name Unit Type Expression The name has to be unique, starting with letter, followed by letters, digits or "_". The length of the name has to be between 1 and 256. The text shall represent the unit of the expression channel like bar, but it can be left with empty. Expression: - This kind of expression can be double, long or logical which will be determined automatically according to the expression text, and calculated and stored for each sample. Trigger (Any change): This kind of expression is boolean type of expression and is used to define an event as a trigger where not all calculated samples are important. It is calculated for each sample but displayed and stored only if the value changed from True to False or False to True Trigger (True to False): It is calculated for each sample but displayed and stored only if the value changed from True to False Trigger (False to True): It is calculated for each sample but displayed and stored only if the value changed from False to True This user interface component is used to define the expression text to be evaluated. The expression text may contain references for other channels, operators and constants. The channel reference is displayed with full qualified name as default which identifies the channel exactly. If you clear the Show full qualified names checkbox, the channel names are reduced to their shortest forms which still uniquely identify the channels. It is possible to type the channel name or drag and drop the channels from the Resource Panel tree. Exact typing is assisted by syntax highlighting. Expressions are automatically validated in the dark gray area under the expression text. Knorr-Bremse Group 17
Functions: New Edit Clone This function will start to create a new expression. Edit the selected expression channel. Clone an expression with minor modifications, but it is important to change the name of the new expression to be unique. Update Add Import It is used to apply the changes of the properties. This function will create a new expression using the properties. It provides possibilities to import expressions from another file. It will display an Open file dialog to select the file where the expressions will be imported from. Knorr-Bremse Group 18
4 Maintenance Guide PCB version: v The SU06A device should be attached to the personal computer (PC) via the USB cable delivered with the device. Don t use other USB extension cables/cords but solely the USB cable packaged with the SU06A device. The SU06A apart from power suppliers for sensors gets input voltage from USB port. The maximal current load is 300mA. Attach the USB cable directly to the PC USB port, do not use USB extension cables. If you need power supply for pressure sensors then attach one of the special power cables packaged with the SU06A device to the POWER connector. One of the power cables has a grounded power plug for connecting to the line voltage ( V AC ), the other cable has banana plugs for low-voltage ( V DC ) feeding. The polarity of the DC supply voltage is of no interest. The ground banana plug at the end of the greenyellow wire should be connected to the ground point. The presence of the supply voltage is indicated by the POWER INPUTS LEDs. In case of failure of the SU06A s internal power supply unit, an external stabilized 24V DC power supply can be plugged into the POWER INPUTS banana sockets. The switching transformer of the internal power supply unit can make low, hissing noise. This sound does not mean any failure of the device. The connectors on the front panel of the SU06A are divided into 5 groups. These groups are the following: - Relay The relay output channel can be controlled via the Service Terminal application. The maximal current drain of the relay contacts is 150V/1A. - Analog outputs There are two analog output channels with an output voltage range from 0V to 10V. The resolution of channels is 12 bit (~ 2,5mV/bit). The maximal current drain of analog output channels is 10mA. - Digital inputs There are 16 independent, optically detached digital input channels with reverse polarity protection. The D13..D16 channels are connected to D-Sub connector and parallel to banana sockets. Do not use the two connector types Knorr-Bremse Group 19
simultaneously. The maximal input voltage of digital input channels is 150V. Configurable switching level: 10V +/-20% or 37.5V +/-15%. - Analog inputs There are 12 analog input channels divided into galvanically detached groups of 4. The analog inputs are connected to 25-pin D-Sub connector (all channels), as well as to PrM1 PrM4 LEMO socket (channels 1...4), to PrM5...PrM8 LEMO socket and to Ach5 Ach8 banana socket (channels 5...8), and to Ach9...Ach12 banana socket (channels ). The channel 12 is also connected to the input of accelerometer. Always use only one of parallel bound connectors at a time. Pressure sensors can be also connected to the LEMO sockets. The 24VDC power supply of pressure sensors is provided by the SU06A. The maximal current drain of one sensor is 20mA. The maximal input voltage of analog input channels is 150V. The inputs are reverse polarity protected. Resolution of the inputs: 16 bit. - Accelerometer Input channel for acceleration sensor. This analog input is parallel bound with Ach12 analog channel, therefore do not use other connecting points of the 12th analog channel simultaneously with acceleration sensor. The acceleration sensor requires 5VDC power supply from the SU06A. The presence of supply voltage is indicated by the LED near the LEMO socket. The acceleration sensor should NEVER be connected to input channels for pressure sensors (PrM1...PrM8) because their 24V power supply will destroy the acceleration sensor! The SU06A is not protected against water and dust. Operating temperature range: -10 C C Knorr-Bremse Group 20
5 Technical Specification 5.1 Power Supply The connected external power supply unit is galvanically detached from the connected PC as well as measured signals. The presence of power load is indicated by 2 POWER INPUT LEDs on the front panel of the device. The connector is placed on the side of the SU06A. The type of the socket is Hirschmann STASEI200. Input voltage range is 24VDC..110VDC, or 115VAC..230VAC trough the same input. The polarity of input voltage is of no interest. (The typical usage settings for input voltage are: 24VDC, 72VDC, 110VDC, 115VAC, 230VAC.) Note: The SU06A apart from power suppliers for pressure sensors gets input voltage needed for measurements from USB port. Thus if the pressure sensors are not in use, there is no need for external supply voltage. 5.2 Analog inputs There are 12 analog inputs in the system. The inputs have 1MOhm input impedance. The inputs are divided into 3 groups of 4 channels (1..4, 5..8, 9..12). The groups are detached from each other, each group has its own ground, common for the channels in the group. The offset between groups as well as between a group and the ground can be max. 150V to keep the measurement be correct. The resolution of A/D transformation of the sampled analog signal is 16 bit. The input measuring limit can be 15V or 150V. The device will not fail even if 150V will be switched on the input whilst using the measuring limit of 15V. Knorr-Bremse Group 21
The sampling interval can be chosen from the Service Terminal application from the range of 1ms and 1000ms. 26 5.10 Special cables With a separate order of KB adapter cable STN41896 (0,5m length) and KB pressure sensor DG10-S (STN29890) an electronic pressure measurement system can be realized. The cable includes the 500 Ohm load resistor. One system is able to measure not more than 8 pressure sensors. STN29890 STN41896 The connection to the pneumatic system requires an additional adapter I87308 (KB T2 adapter) or C105707/1 (System Staubli) depending on the installed test point. To avoid any electrical influence to the sensor there has to be an insulator between car and sensor/measurement device SU06A! A 15m extension cable (STN41902) gives the possibility to place the SU06A distant from the test points. The overall accuracy includes deviation of load resistor, SU06A and sensor in a temperature range from -25 C to 70 C is better than +/- 2.2% F.S.
