1 PIEXX UT36 px Installation Instructions The PIEXX UT-36 px is a physical and electrical replacement for the original ICOM UT-36 speech synthesizer. UT-36 px Installation The UT-36 px speech synthesizer module can be used in a wide range of Icom radios including the IC-781, IC-765, IC-970A/H, IC-275, IC-R9000 and IC-R7100. You should follow the installation instructions provided in your radios users manual. However, care must be taken in order to insure the proper alignment of the two interconnecting cables, that come from your radio, with the headers installed on the UT-36 px board. If you examine the 5 pin data connector, and the 3 pin audio connector, you will notice that on one side of the connector the connector pins are visible as shown in the pictures below. UT-36 connecting cables orientated so pins are visible.
2 UT-36 connecting cables orientated so pins are not visible. When you plug these connectors into the UT-36 px board, make sure the connector pin side is facing the inside of the board as shown below. In this view you can see the proper orientation of the 5 pin data connector.

The following instructions detail the installation of the PIEXX UT-36 px speech synthesizer board in the Icom IC-R7100 receiver. 1. Remove the top cover of the IC-R7100 receiver. 2. Locate the 5-pin data cable and the 3-pin audio cable coming from the harness towards the left front of the receiver. Install these two cables on the J2 and J3 header pins as indicated previously in this document.

Peel back the protective paper from the double sided tape on the bottom of the UT-36px board and affix the board to the receivers chassis as shown in the above photograph. 4. Re-install the top cover. Installation is complete. Installation in IC-970A,H transceiver. The following instructions detail the installation of the PIEXX UT-36 px speech synthesizer board in the Icom IC-970A,H transceiver. 1. Remove the top cover of the IC-970A,H transceiver. 2. Locate the 5-pin data cable and the 3-pin audio cable coming from the harness towards the front of the transceiver. The 5 pin connector is labeled 89 and the 3 pin cable is labeled 90. Install these two cables on the J2 and J3 header pins as indicated previously in this document.

Peel back the protective paper from the double sided tape on the bottom of the UT-36px board and affix the board to the transceivers chassis in a convenient location. 4. Re-install the top cover. Installation is complete. Installation in IC-781 transceiver. The following instructions detail the installation of the PIEXX UT-36 px speech synthesizer board in the Icom IC-781 transceiver. 1. Remove the top cover of the IC-781 transceiver. 2. Locate the 5-pin data cable and the 3-pin audio cable coming from the harness on the left side of the Logic B Unit board. Install these two cables on the J2 and J3 header pins as indicated previously in this document. 3. Peel back the protective paper from the double-sided tape on the bottom of the UT-36px board and affix the board to the Logic B Unit board in the space marked OPTION UNIT UT The brown power lead coming from the IC-781, unfortunately, has a 1K resistor in series with it, which must be removed for proper
6 operation of the UT-36px in this radio. Follow this brown lead from the 5 pin connector you installed on the UT-36px board to the point it solders to on the Logic B Unit. This wire is located just to the upper right of C42, a blue 22uF radial electrolytic capacitor, and just below the problem 1K resistor R70. Clip this lead close to the point it solder to on the Logic B Unit board.
7 5. Re-connect this brown lead on the left hand lead of inductor L3. L3 is the green inductor just above the point you removed the brown wire from. The left lead of inductor L3 is the exposed lead. 6. Re-install the top cover. Installation is complete. Installation in IC-765 transceiver. The IC-765 transceiver suffers from the same problem that the IC-781 does, namely that Icom installed a 1K resistor, R24 on the Logic Unit Board, between the 13.8 VDC power supply and the power lead going to the 5 pin connector that supplies power to the UT-36px board. This resistor needs to be removed and jumped out for proper operation of the UT-36px board. We will provide installation photos of the UT-36px in this radio when we get our hands on IC-765!
