5 MODURBAN MODURBAN ( ) four-year project; started in January 2005 Deliverables: functional prescriptions; technical prescriptions; safety concepts; procedures. Operational objectives : Reduction of costs per passenger km Increased modularisation and harmonisation Further automation of metro systems Reduce duration of migration phases and facilitate upgrading of existing networks Increase capacity on existing infrastructure

6 URBAN TRACK Strategic aim ( to support projects for cost-effective introduction of new high performance track infrastructure products and techniques to develop and build an integrated family of maintenance-free modular track infrastructure solutions

7 European Rail Research Network of Excellence EURNEX ( ): network of universities and research centres, as well as key international transport associations covers all fields of rail transport UITP ensures that issues specific to metros and light rail, as well as to suburban and regional rail, are properly represented. Start date: 2004.

8 Policy research UITP is the leading partner for 2 Coordination Actions: SPUTNIC (Strategies for Public Transport in Cities): contribute to survival, renewal and revitalisation of PT systems which face particular challenge caused from accumulation of rapid and uneven change with unfavourable inheritance. COUNTERACT (Cluster Of User Networks in Transport and Energy Relating to Anti-terrorist ACTivities): improve security against terrorist attack aimed at public passenger transport, freight transport and energy production and transmission infrastructure.

9 Modal advisory bodies on research European Commission supports creation of technology platforms in charge of defining strategy for European research. UITP involvement: BUT: European Rail Research Advisory Council (ERRAC) European Road Transport Research Advisory Council (ERTRAC) Modal approach Specificity of urban transport not covered

10 European Research Forum for Urban Mobility 6th FP - DG Research Coordinator: UITP - Euroteam Objectives setting up research priorities for urban mobility sector creating a forum of stakeholders on urban mobility research. recommendations for coordination of European research on urban mobility.

11 EURFORUM specificities All modes (including intermodal transport) Both passengers and freight Involvement of urban mobility stakeholders Both technology-oriented and policy-oriented research Special attention to urban mobility challenges in New Member States.

13 Project outline Started on 1 April 2006; final report in November Approach: Look at achievements of European mobility research (SoA) Formulate urban mobility vision with time horizon 2020 Development of Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) submit a proposal for organisation and composition of urban mobility research EU advisory structure. Discussion and validation of results by key stakeholders interested in urban mobility research in Europe

14 Stakeholder involvement Wide network of urban mobility stakeholders, both in on-line forum and in 2 EURFORUM Plenary Sessions. This ensures that agenda proposed by consortium corresponds with needs of actors in field. 1st plenary session has taken place on 28 February 2007.
