2 Why hybrid communication? Main objective: scale up traffic safety (information) Accidents and Extreme weather Extensive road network Average car age is 12 years (FI) Existing and excellent communications

3 Hybrid Communication C-ITS (V2V or V2I) uses technologies that allow road vehicles to communicate with other vehicles, with C-ITS applications, with infrastructure and traffic lights and with other road users. (modified C-ITS Platform, 2016) Hybrid communication offers seamless C-ITS connections of ITS- G5, cellular and other communication technologies to ensure that Safety Related Traffic Information (SRTI) messages are delivered independently wherever possible. 4 NordicWay includes 1 4 C-ITS corridor countries: Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden 2,000 users on Nordic roads NordicWay Hybrid communication C-ITS NordicWay pilots 3 core Safety Related Traffic Information (SRTI) services: 1. cooperative hazardous location warning 2. cooperative weather and slippery road warning 3. probe data services + additional national services NordicWay demonstrates the concept of hybrid C-ITS service utilising 3G/4G/LTE and ITS-G5 communication. NordicWay offers road users safety and interoperable services and an ecosystem for the data value chain and stakeholders

NordicWay interoperability demonstration in 10 th of May 2017 at Sweden-Norway border Demonstration presentation and film material to be released in May and June 2017 at Interchange Node Partners (private and public) intend to use solution based on Interchange Node in future deployments Interchange Node deployment: business model, service provider onboarding, management, etc. 8

10 Hybrid communication expectations and lessons Hybrid communication expectations In the end C-ITS effect on traffic safety comes from the number of users (vehicles, C-ITS applications, road users and infrastructure), service coverage (cellular is everywhere) and quality of service (merge cellular and ITS-G5 benefits) Hybrid communication to scale up C-ITS services Cloud services already running in markets and ITS-G5 roll out coming, time to bring them together for deployment Data market ecosystem for Day 1 and beyond C-ITS services: safety and business First few lessons learned in NordicWay DATEX2, existing standard, but stil work needs to be done NordicWay Interchange Node works, but new features are needed in queues, accounts, subscription of specific SRTI messages, etc. Harmonization of services 10
