3 Our Journey GD Energy Services Nuclear Limited was previously NDSL Business formed in 2001 as a nuclear consultancy business around ROV, decommissioning and ventilation On site implementation services work commenced in 2006 with the first success in Dounreay decommissioning operations framework 3

5 Our Journey In 2013 the founder and major shareholder decided to retire again and sell the business In December 2013 the business was sold to GD Energy Services SAU, a family owned business from Valencia in Spain. Although larger than NDSL a lot of the principles of a SME are shared with the family ownership and day-day involvement The UK business still thinks and behaves like an SME Forss is still our home 5

8 In 2013 GDES Nuclear Limited was awarded a framework by DSRL to provide decommissioning services following a similar framework which was held from August 2010 building upon an even earlier framework for operatives in The scope of the new framework potentially includes: DSRL Decommissioning Framework Full turnkey decommissioning projects FEED studies Provision of Decommissioning Teams The framework operates through mini competitions and for the current tranche (up to 2017) GDES is providing the largest team (~80 personnel) on the Dounreay site. The teams are allocated through the GDES Labour Allocation Manager (co-located with DSRL on site) across the site in Reactors (DFR & PFR) and the Fuel Cycle Area (FCA). As a result the teams are experienced in working in a variety of hazardous environments including Alpha (PCM), Alkali metals and Beta / Gamma. 8

9 Problem JRC-ISPRA Contaminated Na Disposal JRC had used a trials rig for experimenting in the reactions between hot uranium and sodium metal. Approach Working in collaboration with the main contractor (UKAEA Ltd, now Cavendish Nuclear) NDSL was responsible for overall project management, characterisation of the material, preparation of all the necessary documents to enable repackaging, transport to the UK and incineration, and the implementation of the work including repackaging at Ispra in Italy. As well as the close relationship with our client we also used specialist subcontractors as part of the team; Serco (Gamma Spectroscopy) and the University of Southampton (radio-chemical analysis) 9

14 Key lessons People As a service business having the right people makes all of the difference. As a SME having the right people as a team really makes the difference. It tends to be all hands on deck rather than specific defined roles. Focus Any business needs to be clear about what it is offering but as a SME our experience has been to carefully consider the where (markets) as much as the what (product & service) 14

15 Key lessons Collaboration To be perceived as bigger working with others has helped enormously. Our Professional Services team for DSRL reflects this; other SMEs as well as larger companies working together. This remains a key value for the business Business Growth Don t shy away from new services / products / markets but be wary. Check the demand ; does it make sense? Is the business case too reliant on 1 assumption? Are there others doing the same? Is your home base in the centre of demand or at the extreme? 15

16 Summary Civil nuclear is dominated by large (some FTSE100) companies but there is a need and room for SMEs and smaller (ME) businesses A need to have a clear value proposition whether a product or a service Prepare for pitfalls Be patient; the nuclear sector can be very slow 16
