5 What is a Relative Criticality Analysis? Analysis on a System Level Ranked Relative to Other Plant Systems Analysis of the Relative Criticality of the Assets Being Maintained Where Relative Criticality is a Function of: Consequence of Failure Likelihood of Failure 5

6 How to Complete a Criticality Analysis Define the List of Systems that Provide 100% Asset Coverage Group Workshop Setting (Ops., Maint., Management) For Each System Prepare a List of Worst Case Failure Scenario Descriptions Example: Influent Pump System Stops Pumping and Sewage Backs-up In Basements For Each Scenario Provide Rankings on a Standardized Scale to Quantify Consequence and Likelihood 6

7 Criticality Analysis Ranking Consequence Areas Ranked for Each System s Failure Scenarios Safety Capacity Environmental Operating Costs Stakeholder Collateral Damages Ranked As: Unacceptable Major Undesirable Minor 7

21 Abstract With limited funds, it is more important then ever to invest capital for the maximum benefit. Asset Management provides a framework to evaluate and prioritize capital investments by combining condition assessment, expected asset life, and criticality to identify the highest priority repair and replacements. Veolia Water North America (VWNA) has been developing and using a variety of methods to refine the approach to developing a capital plan in accordance with their asset management program. While the ultimate objective is to have a statistically significant projection of expected asset life based on data from the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), a much simpler program has been developed to establish a baseline for small water and wastewater plants or projects with little CMMS history. The presentation will cover the steps taken to develop a baseline Asset Management Capital Investment Plan including: Determining Criticality using the Relative Criticality Analysis Developing Condition Assessment standards with measurable criteria Using industry standards for expected useful life to project remaining life Sorting and prioritizing asset replacements using the Criticality, Condition, and Expected Remaining Life for Capital Investment Planning. Gresham Story Start somewhere and go broad Gresham Criticality ranking done, then needed condition ranking to each asset in 6 months. Now Asking more questions. How much is spent, etc Gresham - Decision between R&R and Capital Plan Vancouver Frito Lay Using Condition/Criticality to filter results to prioritize the capital plan list Vancouver Maintenance vs. Capital how to take the data and now use it to make decisions.
