4 4 Hitachi File and Content Services Strategy for Microsoft SharePoint Unstructured file data represents up to 60% 1 of existing corporate data and 70-80% of new data created 2. A recent storage audit of more than 200 large companies showed that the typical organization has not accessed more than 60% of its file data in over one year 3. The growth of unstructured file data puts a strain on the server and storage where it resides, as well as the backup and replication systems that protect it. Having an intelligent solution to manage this data enables backup and recovery optimization, reclamation of primary storage resources, and regulatory compliance and retention management. Additionally, advanced reporting makes planning for future purchases easier and allows additional capacity to be acquired at the proper time. In the past, the solution to the problem of file growth was to simply add more storage. Over time, as the file data continues to grow, there is nothing simple about adding additional storage. Servers begin to run slowly, backups exceed available windows and data that must be retained for compliance is lost or deleted. Part of the problem is that all data has been treated as equal, regardless of who created it, when it was last accessed or even what type of data it is. When the volume of data in the enterprise is combined with not understanding what it is, where it is, or what the value is, the process begins to break down and become unmanageable. The solution to the problem of file growth is intelligent data management, classification and archiving with the Hitachi Content Archive Platform and ARKIVIO auto-stor. The Hitachi Content Platform is a distributed object store that provides an active archive with intelligent storage of files, scalability to 40 PB in a single system and guaranteed authenticity of data. 5 5 Hitachi Data Systems File Archiving Solution Solution Overview Hitachi Data Systems can address the challenges of file growth in enterprise environments with a complete solution based on the Hitachi Content Platform and ARKIVIO auto-stor software. ARKIVIO auto-stor has been certified to work with the Hitachi Content Platform and is fully supported by Hitachi Data Systems and Rocket Software, parent company of ARKIVIO. ARKIVIO auto-stor integrates with the Content Platform via the HTTP or HTTPS protocol. HTTP/HTTPS is the preferred protocol and provides the highest performance for archiving and retrieval of data. ARKIVIO auto-stor also supports authenticated namespaces, figure below, on the Content Platform and can set retention periods for files. Each tenant & set of namespaces is a virtual Hitachi Content Platform Tenants segregate management Namespaces segregate data Namespaces can be uniquely configured Separate service levels Separate data management policy Separate data access rules Data access accounts control which users and applications can access data in that virtual content platform Tenants and Authenticated Namespaces on the Hitachi Content Platform The next two sections describe the process of classifying and archiving data. Data Classification and Reporting The first step to optimizing a file environment is to understand the make up and distribution of the data. ARKIVIO auto-stor collects information on total and usable capacity by server and export/share as well as file type, last access date, last modified date, file size, path and user/group information. See Figure 3 for an example of a report based on file last access date; a full report will also include detailed file information. The process for collecting this information with ARKIVIO auto-stor is straightforward and uses a single web-based management console for the enterprise. Information is collected without the use of agents and with minimal impact on the network and the servers themselves. During collection, user access to data is not impacted as the process is non-disruptive. Once data is collected it can be grouped and classified based upon the requirements of the organization. Groups are logical collections and can be based on volumes or specific file characteristics, type, age, owner, etc. Figure 4 shows an example of file groups. 6 6 ARKIVIO auto-stor File Groups After data has been collected and groups have been created, detailed reporting and classification can be performed. 7 7 File Archiving and Tiering to the Hitachi Content Platform After data has been classified and reports have been generated, intelligent decisions can be made about how to manage files. ARKIVIO auto-stor includes policy-based data management that can be used to copy, move or migrate data to the Hitachi Content Platform or Hitachi NAS Platform, or to delete data. Data can also be archived to the Hitachi Content Platform with a retention policy. When data is archived with retention, the Hitachi Content Platform will enforce the retention period specified in the ARKIVIO auto-stor policy. Administrators have several options when performing archiving, or tiering, to the Hitachi Content Platform with ARKIVIO auto-stor. If a migration policy is used, the data will still be accessible to end users via a stub or link. If the data needs to be preserved without end user access, a move policy can be used and a stub or link will not be created. If a move policy is used, files can be restored to a separate location by an administrator. 8 8 Solution Details Hitachi Content Platform (Hitachi Content Platform) The Hitachi Content Platform is a multipurpose, distributed storage solution that addresses many challenges in the growth of unstructured data. An intelligent, content-based system, it supports multiple tiers of storage for a wide range of unstructured content, all in a single platform. The Content Platform can be used to securely segregate data and provide different features and levels of service for different datasets. Scales to 40 PB in a single cluster, online and without interruption Can be divided into multiple virtual content platforms (tenants and namespaces), each with its own unique configuration and access control Provides data integrity checking, RAID-6, replication, encryption, WORM, multiple versions of objects and audit logging Automates the movement of data from old storage to new storage for online upgrades and expansion Manages and enforces policies for retention, disposal, shredding and other compliance and lifecycle management operations ARKIVIO auto-stor ARKIVIO auto-stor enables organizations to discover and collect statistics on storage utilization and data usage patterns across heterogeneous file systems without deploying server agents. Storage and data can be organized into logical groups based on administrator defined criteria in order to simplify data management. 12 12 Demonstrations to Win Click to Demo (Remote Demonstrations) This option provides Channel Partners with remote, cost effective access to Hitachi Data Systems solutions without having their customers leaving the office. The prospective customer experiences the solutions functionality through on-line live customized, professionally-led briefings combined with on-demand pre-recorded demonstration Flash videos. Depending on Partner requirements, remote demos are modular and may include: a PowerPoint presentation (customized for the customer); a demonstration guide (with the information necessary to plan, set up and run the demonstration); and executable applications and/or scripts to complement the demonstrations. The repeatable demo resource is available for use today. To participate, Channel Partners should contact their Channel Manager or Authorized Distributor who will set up and host the demonstration. A targeted Hitachi Data Discovery for Microsoft SharePoint demonstration is available for Channel Partners. This demonstration articulates the ease of ingestion from SharePoint to Hitachi Content Platform. It walks through ingestion process from SharePoint server to Hitachi Content Platform demonstrating simplicity. After ingesting a file in to Hitachi Content Platform, the demonstration connects to Hitachi Content Platform through CIFS and display the actual file that has been ingested with its metadata. We also focus on its fast streaming searching capabilities and saved queries. Loan to Demo Own-to-demo This option provides Channel Partners with convenient access to shorter term demo systems to fuel start-up initiative growth. On-loan systems remain the property of Hitachi Data Systems and may be returned at end of loan period or converted to a purchase by the Channel Partner for resale. To start, to the Channel Partner defines a target product, create and execute a revenue growth business plan.
