1 Password Protection for PDF Output (XML Publisher Output) Generated from a Concurrent Program We have all worked on generating a PDF/Excel Output using XML Publisher Tool, now with this article along with generating a PDF Output I am going to explain how a Password protected PDF Output can be generated from a Concurrent program when clicking on the View Output. I would be explaining the steps starting from creating a XML File, then designing the RTF file registration steps of the Template, Data Definition and finally the Concurrent Program along with the generating the required outputs. So the first step is to create a XML File, this can be done using either a RDF Report Builder or Directly as shown below: XML Data Template Sample File: The XML Data Template file has the SQL query and parameter details. You can also download the Data Template File from the link in the Blog Post. 2 Here we attach the.xml File, ensure the CODE Name defined is the same that you use while defining the Concurrent Program. 4 Attach the Template File as below: The next step would be defining the Concurrent Program; here I would be using the standard XML Publisher Data Definition Executable XDODTEXE The Output Format should be XML, My program would have a Parameter that accepts the TRX_NUMBER Concurrent Program: Password Protected PDF Output Surya Gunti Page 4

5 Add the Concurrent Program to a desired Request Set, Parameter List for Concurrent Program: Setting the Password for the PDF can be a Static Password which will be common for the PDF Generated from the RTF file or a Dynamic one which is different for each PDF generated from the RTF file Static Password Dynamic Password Static Password: You can set a static password for the output. This means, the password will remain the same for the report output. You can set this property in the RTF Template itself. Let s see how we can achieve the same. Open RTF Template and Click on File. 6 Or Make sure you are on the File Info Tab and then click on Properties. This will give you a list of options. You will have to select Advanced Properties. Concurrent Program: Password Protected PDF Output Surya Gunti Page 6

7 On the next screen, we need to define the below custom properties that will help us to password protect PDF outputs. Let us enter the details for PDF Security property. You can find the details in the table listed above. Once you have entered all the details, click on Add. In the same way, enter the details for the PDF Password Property. 8 Refer to the below screen shot for more details. Once the data is entered as said and saved here is the screen how it looks like. Once you have completed entering the details for both the properties, save the RTF Template and you are all set to test the output. 9 Let s now see how a Dynamic Password can be set and defined. Dynamic Password: The best way to secure the output file is to generate a dynamic password for the output file. We can achieve this by using a value from the xml data element. For Eg, you want to the invoice details to the customers and also secure the file with a password. Since you will be sending the file to different customers, it does not make sense to keep the same password for all the files. Instead, you can use the trx number as a password. This way the password will be different for the files send to the different customers based on the TRX NUMBER To get the trx number, we can use the value from /XXARTRXPPO/LIST_G_CUSTOMER/G_CUSTOMER/TRX_NUMBER Check the output XML Data file to confirm the same. Set the xdo-pdf-security to true. This is the same as discussed in the earlier section on how to set a static password. For xdo-pdf-open-password property, the value field should have the following {XXARTRXPPO/LIST_G_CUSTOMER/G_CUSTOMER/ TRX_NUMBER}. Make sure that to include the {}. 10 Save your RTF file and you are all set to test the results. Run the Concurrent Programs The XML Data file that I have included has TRX Number as So you can use the same when prompted for a password. Concurrent Program: Password Protected PDF Output Surya Gunti Page 10

11 Provide the password as TRX Number: (dynamic password) Output: You can use the same in conjunction with XML Bursting. This will allow you to send files as attachment and also password protect PDF output. Concurrent Program: Password Protected PDF Output Surya Gunti Page 11
