2 Albums are one way that students are able to organize the content they create and discover within Xplana. The subject index tagging allows the platform to recommend relevant content to the user down to the key learning concept. This student is utilizing the album to aggregate study materials for his first exam. Permissions are set on each piece of content according the creator s sharing preferences. Page 1

3 The content recommended according to the album s subject tags, as well as the user s content, can be dropped into the album with an option to preview the asset before adding it. Communities are another way instructors and students choose to organize and share their digital resources. This instructor has organized content into albums by chapter and given permission for other users to subscribe to these. Page 2

4 When a user subscribes to an asset or album, the content is stored in their personal content section and will be updated as the creator adds and edits the materials. Our student is adding an album from this community to the collection of study materials he is building. Xplana s digital content library has over 400,000 valuable resources contributed by subject matter experts, instructors, teachers, and other users. The full text search capabilities make Xplana s library uniquely supportive to users as they effortlessly search for key words and phrases. Page 3

5 Note the search results returned a classmate s notes, a video relevant to exam 1, and highlights that have been exported from the ereader into Xplana. Students may add content directly from the search results page to their albums or communities. Students may also open the asset from the browse page. Subscribing to an asset will place it in the student s content section where it is accessible from the student s Home page. Page 4

6 The asset will be updated with any additions or revisions made by the creator. Users can discuss and rate assets adding to the value of content as it receives more peer and faculty reviews. This student is taking notes in class and was recommended a video and set of flashcards based on the text within the notes as well as the Subject Index tag. Page 5

7 This demonstrates how Xplana can recognize key concepts and make content smarter. The student is able to add the notes to his album he made for aggregating study materials. Users are also able to utilize classmates and instructors as resources by accessing their personal content libraries. Page 6

8 In this image, the student is rearranging the content within their Exam 1 Study Materials album to reflect the sequence of subjects that will be covered in class. The ability to navigate content within an album highlights the positive effect digital materials have on studying. The efficiency and flexibility afforded to users by Xplana extends beyond the platform, allowing students to access their content on the go. Page 7

9 Digital Experience 1 Sample Overview Xplana setup an instance of the social learning platform for demonstration. There are two steps in the process of participation. 1. Download the Xplana App (details at 2. Get your login credentials. (printed invitation with user id. and password from Rick Wilson prior to session)* *Get invitation from Rick by request text or rick.wilson@learn2perform.com and arrange to meet, look for him, or get it at the session. 10 Content Creation The mobile environment design is for access to existing curriculum or courses, to which the student is a subscriber (member). The add content tab is active allowing the student to create new or use existing source content and upload it to albums (resource centers). The upload of content can go into an existing album or the student can add a new album. Xplana uses a metaphor of album as part of a concept like itunes for orchestrating aggregation and uses of content. Adding Content Here the demonstration is of adding an image. Click the Add Image icon. The option available is to upload an existing image (photo or graphic) or to take a picture. Page 2

11 Adding an Image The mobile device camera becomes active and the student takes a picture. Add the image by selecting Use or select Retake to discard it and take another photo. Curate the Content Before saving the uploaded content, it needs an identity to catalog and index it for searchability and accessibility. Title Description Permission Subject Index Page 3

12 Content Availability Once saved, the content shows up under the Your Content tab. The content is visible from the web interface as well under a similar button. What is visible here are all content assets which a student created or to which a student subscribed. Content Albums Students can navigate to their albums to find a particular collection of resources available from the mobile device. Page 4

13 Content Searchability Students can do full text searches on all content available in the environment. Here the search is content associated with exam 1, which can be selfprepared content, instructor assigned, or community and subject or curriculum available. Content Accessibility Students can access and view content or other assets from the home page of the course from anywhere at anytime. Page 5

14 Content Shareability The social learning environment opens up and engages students with organized communities in which to participate and in which the student can share resources. Study groups Focus groups Subject matter groups Interest groups Personal groups (just friends) Instructor / Curriculum based groups Xplana opens up sharing outside the structured communities for sharing via social networks as well.
