1 Software Announcement November 30, 1999 IBM Communication Subsystem for Interconnection (CSFI) R3 Overview CSFI enables interoperability between heterogeneous resources, terminals, and applications. CSFI, a S/390 architecture software for MVS, VM, and VSE, is intended for multivendor environments. Features: Gives you native access from 3270 terminals to VT100, VT220, TTY, and Minitel applications, and Dynamic Keyboard Mapping and printing functions. Enables access from a number of supported ASCII terminals to SNA applications, and to AS/400 applications with SPLS printing functions. Provides full coverage of the heterogeneous world, through a high-level API. Develop mappers for specific connectivity requirements not natively covered by CSFI. This function supports non-ibm terminal access to SNA as a 3270 terminal, for access to a non-ibm system (BULL, for example). Extends the IBM TCP/IP offering to 3270 users for access to full-screen VT220 applications and Telnet client function (CSFI for MVS only). SNA, OSI, and X.25 connectivity is also available. Extends the IBM TCP/IP offering to VT100 users for access to full-screen 3270 applications (CSFI for MVS only). SNA, OSI, and X.25 connectivity is also available. Improves user productivity, with support for VT220 protocol for 3270 terminals accessing VT220 applications. Enables direct printing for 3270 terminals accessing TTY and VT220 applications. Significantly improves performance by supporting the GATE/FTPI function of NPSI. Reduces resource small, numerous transactions, such as in Videotex or banking applications. Extends Java applets Minitel and VT100 emulation applets, for Videotex servers access from a Web browser (CSFI for MVS only). Increases availability by centrally monitoring CSFI resource with NetView or Tivoli Enterprise, in addition to CSFI operator (CSFI for MVS only). 2 Description Main Functions of CSFI CSFI/WELCOME (Users Entry Point): Connect 3270-type or ASCII terminals or Java applets to CSFI. Password control is linked with RACF software. Access applications under CSFI. Multisession mode is available on a single terminal. CSFI/PES (PAD Emulation Services): Provides access to non-ibm applications or services in Minitel, Teletype, or VT100/VT200 mode from an IBM 3270-type terminal. CSFI/PES supports SNA printers known by CSFI. CSFI/ABTS (ASCII Block Terminal Services): Connects IBM ASCII and some non-ibm ASCII terminals or emulators via NPSI and X.29 PAD to IBM applications. CSFI/ABTS supports printers connected to the ASCII terminal and to CSFI. CSFI/ADMIN (Administrator Services): Administrates user profiles, available resources, and access rights to the different CSFI services. CSFI/OPER (Operator Services): Manage and control resources used by CSFI. Highlights of CSFI Release 3 Enables access to CSFI from a workstation with a Web browser, connected to an Internet/intranet, using a Minitel or VT100 emulator Applet. Enables centralized monitoring of CSFI resource management with NetView/Tivoli. Enables access to CSFI Welcome and: Applications from a VT100 terminal connected to a TCP/IP Intranet SNA Subsystems through a TCP/IP network Enables access to CSFI by WINDOWS and OS/2 Warp Workstations using enetwork Personal Communication and Host OnDemand. Compatible with OS/390 V2R5 and later TCP/IP stack, and TCP/IP up to 3.2 for MVS, keeping applications unchanged. Enables PASSTICKET support, allowing one-time Logon when connecting to an SNA subsystem from CSFI Welcome. Enables sharing of VSAM data sets by several CSFI. 16 MB relieves storage constraints. Resume of CSFI Functions Before R3 Specific Functions for MVS Only (R2.2): CSFI R2.2 includes the following additional functions: PES Dynamic Keyboard Mapping function associate dynamically 3270 PF keys to VT100/VT200 functions. Improvements of PES printing function provides hardcopy option for VT200 and Minitel servers. 8-bit support in ABTS function supports French TVR (Teletel Vitesse Rapide) and French Kiosque Micro. Minitel printer support in ABTS. Access to 5250 applications running on an AS/400 with SPLS function. Improvement of CSFI traces and SNAPs. CSFI R2 is used as a generic term for CSFI R2.0, R2.1, and R2.2. Common Functions to MVS, VM, and VSE (R2.1) CSFI/PES Service Enables 3270 end users to access non-sna servers, through X.25 networks, from their 3270 terminals. That facility is provided through the product built in Pad Emulation Services (PES). Servers supported through PES: ASCII TTY servers Minitel servers (Minitel is the French Videotex terminal) 3270 servers providing CSFI is installed in the server VT100 servers Enables a 3270 user connected to a VT100 Server to customize a keyboard Enables 3270 users to print data coming from a non-sna host on an SNA printer CSFI/ABTS Service Enables ASCII terminal users to get access to SNA applications through the product built in ASCII Block Terminal Services (ABTS). The following ASCII terminals are supported: IBM 3101: block mode IBM 3151: native mode IBM 3161: native mode IBM 3163: native or VT100 emulation mode IBM 3164: 3101 emulation mode IBM PC: 3101 emulation mode DEC VT100: native mode French Minitel: 80-column mode (Teletel/mixte or Teleinformatique) Provides ASCII terminals attached-printer support. This supposes that the terminal-attached PAD supports PAD parameter 12 (refer to X.3 CCITT standard). CSFI/WELCOME Service Provides the supported ASCII device with the same Welcome facilities as those provided by CSFI to 3270 terminals, through the product built in Welcome service: Good morning screen, sign-on screen List of available applications, based on user authority, these may be SNA or non-sna application, on the local or a remote application host Multiple application sessions can be associated to a single user session Hot key definition for switching from one session to the other one without any need for further logoff or logon

3 Programming Facilities Provides protocol mappers in source code as samples for an easy customization, or modification by system programmers to support private protocols or data streams. Provides an easy to use HLAPI, enabling: Hidden complexity of the VTAM application interface behind user-friendly macro statements Implementation of additional protocol mappers to support unique environments Implementation of local applications without any other subsystem, such as IMS, TSO Access of SNA session control elements Provides an Independent Task Interface enabling an Independent Task to communicate with HLAPI applications. Independent tasks may be required to support unique network access methods. System Management Facility: CSFI enhances System Management by providing an interface to NetView. This interface, associated to user or third-party code, enables the support of non-sna resources from a system management point of view; NMVTs may be created and sent to the NetView console. The network operator may access the CSFI Operator task to monitor, through user or third-party code, heterogeneous network resources. CSFI R2 enhances systems management by offering the capability to automate some command operations from NetView, through Netview CLISTs. Case Studies CSFI applies in any situation where several types of terminals need to access a centralized SNA application, or where 3270 terminals need to access several types of applications. Service providers offering a centralized SNA application that must be widely accessed by customers equipped with various types of terminals (ABTS function) Merging companies with centralization of applications on an SNA host, each company keeping its own and different park of terminals (ABTS function) SNA customers investing in new mid-range equipment (for example, RS/6000 ) and new ASCII applications (VT220) who access these new applications from existing 3270 terminals SNA customers who want public Videotex- or ASCII-based servers and want to access these from their 3270 terminals Intranet or Internet customers who want to access all server types, including Videotex and BULL, independently from the network leading to them (SNA, X.25, OSI, and TCP/IP.) CSFI and IBM Networking Blueprint CSFI belongs to the Multiprotocol Networking layer of the IBM Networking Blueprint; it allows SNA and non-sna terminals to interoperate with SNA and non-sna applications, through different types of networking facilities like SNA, TCP/IP, and OSI. The HLAPI is part of the multivendor application support layer and plays the role of an application enabler. Year 2000 This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it. Euro Currency This program is not impacted by euro currency. Product Positioning CSFI complements IBM software, transactional and interactive, like CICS, TSO, IMS, or CMS for support of unknown terminal type. You can use SNA applications from a Videotex terminal, an exotic terminal, and Minitel, that consolidate IBM mainframe solutions including Communication Server/390. CSFI enlarge to non-ibm Servers the number of applications usable by an IBM 3270 terminal, Host OnDemand, or Personal Communication in addition to SNA applications. CSFI is a prerequisite for Videotex Control Program ( ). CSFI R3 facilitate migration from Minitel to Web, with its own Videotex/Minitel Java applet emulator, or in association to WebSphere.
