1 Software Announcement October 8, 2002 IBM GPFS for Linux V1.3 Extends Your Configuration Options Overview The IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS) works on a shared disk model. It offers access to files from any server in the system and provides high-performance file I/O to parallel jobs running on multiple nodes, or to serial applications that are scheduled based upon processor availability. GPFS has been available on the AIX operating system for IBM UNIX systems, and IBM pseries and RS/6000 workstations and servers. Now, GPFS for Linux is available for clusters of IBM xseries machines running Red Hat or SuSE Linux and on the IBM eserver Cluster 1350 running Red Hat. GPFS offers many of the standard UNIX file system interfaces, enabling many applications to execute without modification or recompiling. Many of the UNIX file system utilities are also supported by GPFS. GPFS for Linux operates with the Linux kernel to provide the basic operating system services and the routing of file system calls requiring GPFS data. It uses Topology Services for network adapter status, node connectivity information, and reliable messaging services. It uses Group Services for distributed coordination and synchronization service. Another component of the GPFS for Linux product is Network Shared Disk (NSD), which provides remote disk access capability and global disk naming. Scaling has been increased in V1.3. You can have a cluster of 256 xseries machines (models 330, 335, 342, and 345), which may include the Cluster 1300 or Cluster 1350, with disks directly attached, or a cluster of up to 256 machines (some that are NSD servers). For the latest information on supported scaling, refer to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) at: eserver/clusters/software/ gpfs.html Key Prerequisites xseries (models 330, 335, 342 and 345) or IBM eserver Cluster 1300 and 1350 TotalStorage FAStT Storage (FAStT200, FAStT500, and FAStT700) Red Hat Linux or SuSE Linux Enterprise Server GPFS Portability Layer; included on the product CD Planned Availability Date October 25, 2002 Withdrawal from Marketing: GPFS for Linux V1.2 will be withdrawn from marketing October 25, Service Support: V1.2 will be withdrawn from service March 31, V1.3 will be withdrawn from service December 31, At a Glance IBM General Parallel File System for Linux (GPFS) is a shared disk file system that allows access to files within a cluster of IBM xseries servers from any IBM server in the cluster running Red Hat or SuSE Linux. 2 Description GPFS provides file system services to parallel and serial applications running on the Red Hat or SuSE Linux operating environment. GPFS allows parallel applications simultaneous access to the same file, or different files in the same file system, from any node in the GPFS nodeset, while managing a high level of control over all file system operations. A nodeset is a group of nodes that all run the same level of GPFS and operate on the same file system. Serial applications can be dynamically assigned to processors based on utilization and can achieve high-performance access to their data from wherever they run. Using GPFS to store and retrieve files allows multiple processes or applications on all nodes in the nodeset simultaneous access to the same file using standard file system calls. It increases aggregate bandwidth of the file system by spreading reads and writes across multiple disks. Allowing concurrent reads and writes from multiple nodes is key in parallel processing. The use of multi-attached IBM TotalStorage FAStT200, FAStT500, or FAStT700 Storage servers allows applications to continue to operate without interruption in the event of server or adapter failure. GPFS is a logging file system that creates separate logs for each node. These logs record the allocation and modification of metadata, aiding in fast recovery and restoration of data consistency in the event of node failure. With a minimum of two nodes, GPFS failover support allows you to organize your hardware to minimize single points of failure. GPFS supports a maximum file system size of 9 terabytes (TB). Multilevel indirect block support allows file sizes up to the largest supported GPFS file system size (minus space required for metadata). System control of these values allows effective caching of i-nodes and may improve the performance of some applications. In addition, GPFS is a striping file system, which distributes disk blocks across all disks, thereby maximizing their combined throughput. GPFS uses a sophisticated token management system to provide data consistency while allowing multiple, independent concurrent access to the same file from anywhere in the cluster. When hardware resource demands are high, GPFS can find an available path to the file system data. System flexibility is provided with GPFS; you can add or delete disks while the file system is mounted. GPFS for Linux provides clustered file system support for up to 256 nodes. Included with GPFS is a portability layer to the Linux kernel that is encapsulated in a kernel module. This kernel module is provided as source. A simple recompilation specific to the customer s kernel must be done. GPFS for Linux V1.3 has a revised price structure and algorithm, which fits more easily into your specific cluster configuration. Product Positioning GPFS for Linux runs on specific models of rack-optimized xseries hardware and the IBM eserver Cluster 1300 and 1350, and is positioned as a complementary offering to GPFS for AIX. It is targeted for customers who require a robust, scalable file system on a lower-cost, open, Intel -based server platform. For scientific and technical computing, GPFS is ideal for high-performance parallel file transfer and parallel I/O to single or multiple files. GPFS s key strengths are its superior scalability and performance, its ability to support extremely large files, and its failure recovery, making larger configurations practical. GPFS is particularly appropriate in an environment where the aggregate peak need for data exceeds the capability of a single file system server. 4 The portability layer kernel module can be compiled for varying Linux kernels: Red Hat 7.2 Red Hat 7.3 SuSE SLES 7 kernel kernel kernel GB SMP 1 kernel kernel kernel kernel kernel kernel kernel kernel Latest supported kernel level For kernel levels supported after general availability, consult the Frequently Asked Questions available at this Web site: eserver/clusters/software/ gpfs.html Compatibility: IBM GPFS for Linux is not compatible with IBM GPFS for AIX (cannot cross mount the same GPFS file systems). GPFS file systems and nodesets must follow these coexistence guidelines: A GPFS file system may only be accessed from a single nodeset All nodes in a GPFS nodeset must be defined to be in the GPFS cluster All nodes in a GPFS nodeset must be at the same GPFS release level Limitations: Support is provided only with the hardware and software specified in the requirements section of this announcement. For the latest GPFS scaling that is supported, consult the Frequently Asked Questions at this Web site: eserver/clusters/software/ gpfs.html SCSI twin-tailing is not supported in an NSD disk server environment. It is possible to attach a SCSI disk subsystem to a primary NSD server but not simultaneously to a backup NSD server. Performance Considerations: In an NSD server environment, either Myrinet or 1 Gigabit Ethernet in full-duplex mode is suggested. Additionally, 100 Megabit Ethernet is supported. Fibre Channel connectivity at two NSD disk servers for each disk is needed for failover. In a Direct Disk Attach environment, Myrinet, 100 Megabit or 1 Gigabit Ethernet, operating in full-duplex mode is supported and all nodes intended for GPFS use require local connection to all disks in a file system. Local disk connectivity can be accomplished via Fibre Channel connectivity at every node. Planning Information Packaging: IBM GPFS for Linux is distributed on one CD-ROM, which includes: IBM GPFS for Linux RPM images for SRC, RSCT, and GPFS Product images gpfs.base i386.rpm gpfs.msg.en_us noarch.rpm gpfs.docs noarch.rpm rsct.basic-*.i386.rpm rsct.core-*.i386.rpm rsct.core.utils-*.i386.rpm src-*.i386.rpm README file IBM International Program License Agreement in multi-language booklet (Z ) License Information in multiple languages (LI ) Proof of Entitlement GPFS Portability Layer gpfs.gpl noarch.rpm Security, Auditability, and Control The announced program uses the security and auditability features of the Linux 2.4 operating system. Passport Advantage Applies: No Software Maintenance Applies: Yes IBM Software Maintenance is a one-year or three-year contract offering that enables customers with selected software products (at a predetermined cost) to maintain software product version and release currency. Voice support (during normal business hours) is included at no additional charge for the first year. One year of Software Maintenance is included in the price of the original license. For products participating in IBM Software Maintenance, customers can receive all software product version and release upgrades and voice support, announced during the contract period. If customers allow either the one-year or three-year software maintenance offering to expire without renewal, there will be a Maintenance-after-license option in the Software Maintenance offering to enable reinstatement, on a product-by-product basis. The following is general information regarding the Software Maintenance offering being announced: Structure Each eligible licensed software program will include one year of Software Maintenance (Software Subscription and Technical Support) in the price of the license. A one- or three-year prepay option (each represented by a separate type/model) is available and is associated with each eligible licensed program. The Software Maintenance type/models will have the same pricing structure as the license type/models they are associated with. The Software Maintenance order generated for this product will be a new order and will have a new starting/ending period, separate from the one for the license already in effect. Each one- and three-year Software Maintenance PID will have three sets of feature numbers for each priced entity: A no-charge registration feature for the one-year contracts and a two-year priced feature (since the first year is included in the price of that license) for the three-year contracts. A renewal feature of one or three years. A Software Maintenance after license charge for customers who want to renew but whose coverage has lapsed. Definition of Software Upgrade: An upgrade is either a new version (3.x.x to 4.x.x) or a new release (x.3.x to x.4.x) of an IBM program announced as eligible for which a customer enrolled under the IBM Software Maintenance. Software Maintenance entitles customers to future upgrades from only the latest announced version or release of an available eligible product. Upgrades do not include programs sold separately from the enrolled program, but enhance the performance of that program, or are considered add-ons or utilities. Programs that perform the same functions as the enrolled program but are installed on a non-aix platform are not considered upgrades. Note: Software preventive-maintenance releases x.x.1 to x.x.2 (modification level changes, updates, or refreshes) are released under the one- or three-year maintenance program numbers but only when a supply feature has been announced. Supply features are announced only under the one- or three-year options when there is an announced version/release change against the original program product. No-charge preventive maintenance releases should be obtained by software maintenance customers in the same manner as non-software maintenance customers

7 Example: Product A is offered under IBM Software Maintenance, and three months later PTFs are incorporated into the program package. This is considered an update that would not be obtained under the one- or three-year maintenance program numbers under the IBM Software Maintenance offering. Using the same example above, three months after the PTFs were incorporated into the program package, IBM announces a new version of product A. At that time, a supply feature is announced for product A under the one- or three-year maintenance program numbers. Customers who have purchased the product or whose license includes one year free maintenance can order the upgrade for either the one- or three-year maintenance offering for product A. IBM may announce a product that can be substituted for an enrolled product. This product is neither a new version, a new release, nor a preventive maintenance release of that enrolled product. In most cases, this product has a different architecture, more function, and a higher license charge than the enrolled product. IBM may provide those customers enrolled in the IBM Software Maintenance offering access to this product at a discounted rate. The terms of this transaction will be included in the new product announcement. Note: IBM will continue to make stand-alone software licenses and upgrades available for these products upon customer request. Contact your IBM sales representative or IBM Reseller for details. Contract Duration: The IBM Software Maintenance contracts are on a product-by-product basis and are offered for one or three years. One year of Software Maintenance is included with the purchase of a new license for the product. The three-year prepay option covers two additional years of coverage since the first year is included in the product license. The three-year prepay option can be purchased at the same time a license for an eligible product is purchased. Refunds do not apply if cancellation occurs during the one- or three-year contract period. Customers are not required to renew under either the one-year or three-year offering when the contract expires, but will need to use the Maintenance-after-license option if they let the contract expire and want to acquire a new version or release of an eligible product. If the one-year or three-year contracts aren t renewed, they will be removed from IBM administrative systems. Contract transfer within an enterprise is allowed. Payment Options: Customers enroll in the plan at a reduced Initial price at the same time a new license for an eligible program product is purchased. Customers can also enroll in the plan after a new license for an eligible program product is purchased, but must purchase the Maintenance-after-license option. Software Maintenance Prices: The IBM Software Maintenance program prices are based on the published price of the software program at the time of the contract preparation. Minimum Contract Value: None Notification of Upgrade Availability and Ordering: Customers can register for notifications when Software Maintenance products are upgraded.
