1 Software Announcement October 29, 2002 IBM Infoprint XML Extender for z/os Connects e-business Applications with Advanced Function Presentation Overview Extensible Markup Language (XML) has emerged as the standard data format for platform-independent data interchange. XML has become a key corporate infrastructure technology, just as Advanced Function Presentation (AFP ) has become the foundation for output management infrastructure in many large enterprises. Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) is a companion standard to XML specifying the description of how XML data is to be formatted. The XML data is transformed into Formatting Objects that provide the specification to a layout engine for the desired formatted result. IBM Infoprint XML Extender for z/os is software that operates on XML documents to produce AFP output. It can accept either XML documents with companion XSL style sheets, or documents with XSL Formatting Objects (XSL-FO) as input into the process. It supports a substantial portion of the XSL-FO standard, and provides significant formatting flexibility. 2 Description Why XML? Becoming an e-business means streamlining and integrating business processes within the enterprise, and between the enterprise and its suppliers, partners, and customers. This requires the use of data technologies that support seamless data interchange across different computing platforms. Extensible Markup Language (XML) has emerged as the dominant format for data interchange. It is, therefore, critical to all applications and systems that must store, process, and output data from a range of different sources. XML has become a strategic corporate infrastructure technology for enabling business transformation initiatives such as Web services, business process management, enterprise resource planning, content management, customer relationship management, and more. Just as the Java language enables platform-independent code, XML enables platform-independent data. Combined with the Internet for platform-independent networking, XML enables businesses to more easily implement new Web services applications without making costly changes to front-end and back-end systems. What Is Infoprint XML Extender for z/os? To understand why Infoprint XML Extender is needed, you first need to understand the content and structure of XML data. XML is a markup language for creating tagged, self-defining data elements. It is a standard of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), designed specifically with Web applications in mind. It differs from HTML, which is the standard for presentation of Web pages, in that it is designed for computer-to-computer, or application-to-application communication, rather than for computer-to-human communication. As such, it contains no information on how the data elements are to be formatted for presentation just the data elements and what they mean. A companion standard to the XML standard that describes how the data are to be formatted is Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL). XSL defines a set of elements called Formatting Objects that describe how the XML content should be formatted. It was designed specifically for generating high-quality printable documents. While the predominant form of presentation for Web services applications is Web pages in HTML, there will always be a need for some output in printed format. Companies worldwide have invested in the implementation of highly efficient, streamlined print and electronic output systems based on IBM s de facto standard AFP print and presentation technology. Infoprint XML Extender lets customers deploy new XML-based applications without worrying about compatibility with their existing output systems. AFP output technology adds the value of platform-independent printing and presentation to the benefits of platform-independent coding, data, and networking with Java, XML, and the Internet. How Does Infoprint XML Extender Work? Infoprint XML Extender is software that operates on XML-structured data to produce AFP output. The process consists of two stages. First, the XML data is transformed using an associated XSL style sheet into an intermediate XML document, referred to as an XSL Formatting Objects (XSL-FO) document. Second, the XSL-FO document is composed into AFP. This two-step process provides flexibility in the kinds of documents that can be processed, because it can accept as input either XML data with companion XSL style sheets, or documents that have already been transformed into XSL-FO. Infoprint XML Extender supports a substantial portion of the current XSL-FO standard. It provides significant formatting flexibility for XML-based applications, including specification of pagination, border styles, font selection and style, color, graphics inclusion, tables, lists, and more. All functions of this product support Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) data, but DBCS font mappings are not included. Accessibility by People with Disabilities Infoprint XML Extender has the following features for vision-impaired users: It can be operated using only the keyboard. It provides documentation in an accessible format. Infoprint XML Extender has the following feature for users with mobility impairments or limited hand use: It can be operated using only the keyboard. Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act Infoprint XML Extender is capable as of December 20, 2002, when used in accordance with IBM s associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. Product Positioning Infoprint XML Extender for z/os is the ideal complement to other XML tools and products used in the development and implementation of Web services and other XML-based applications. Where printed or electronic AFP output is required from these applications, Infoprint XML Extender accepts either XML data with XSL style sheets, or XSL-FO XML documents, and composes them into an AFP document with significant formatting capabilities. This solution complements and extends the XML support in Print Services Facility (PSF) V3.3, which formats XML data using an AFP page layout resource. The PSF solution provides less flexibility for dynamic XML content, but produces a highly efficient IPDS data stream that can better support high-speed production printing. 4 IBM US Announcement Supplemental Information October 29, 2002 Technical Information Specified Operating Environment Hardware Requirements: Infoprint XML Extender runs on the following IBM S/390 and IBM zseries processors: All models of the z900 processors All models of the z800 processors All models of the S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server If printing of the Advanced Function Presentation (AFP ) output is required, a printer that adheres to the Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS ) specifications is required. Not all AFP functions are supported on all IPDS printers. Refer to your printer documentation for device capabilities. Software Requirements: Infoprint XML Extender runs on any supported level of the following operating systems: IBM OS/390 V2R10 (5647-A01) IBM z/os V1R1 or a later release (5694-A01) IBM z/os.e (5655-G52) Infoprint XML Extender also requires the following programs: IBM XML Toolkit for z/os and OS/390 V1.4 (5655-J51) and its prerequisites Either of the following: IBM Developer Kit for OS/390, Java 2 Technology Edition (5655-D35) with PTF UQ62958 or later IBM Software Developer Kit for z/os, Java 2 Technology Edition 1.4 (5655-I56) These programs are optional: IBM AFP Font Collection V2.1 for S/390 (5648-B33). If you do not have the AFP Font Collection, you will need to create and install a font index file that describes how to map XSL-FO font requests to the fonts that you do have, and how to map unicode codepoints to AFP codepoints. Sample font index files are shipped with Infoprint XML Extender. If you want to run XML Extender as a managed transform, you need the Infoprint Server feature of OS/390 or z/os with the fix for APAR OW If you want to print AFP documents on IPDS printers, you need IBM PSF V3.1.0 for OS/390, or a later release (5655-B17). If you want to view AFP documents, you need the AFP Viewer plug-in (Web download). If you want to convert AFP into PCL, PostScript, or PDF data streams, you need IBM Infoprint Server Transforms (5697-F51). Note that not all AFP functions are supported by all transforms. Limitations Not all formatting objects, properties, and features of the Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) 1.0 standard are supported by Infoprint XML Extender. DBCS font mappings are not included with Infoprint XML Extender.
