1 Software Announcement July 13, 2004 IBM AIXlink/X.25 V2.1 offers enhancements for migration from X.25 specific adapters that allow APIs to remain the same Overview The AIXlink/X.25 V2.1 program is enhanced to allow the use of Ethernet based LAN adapters. XOT allows X.25 communications over TCP/IP networks. XOL allows X.25 communications over Ethernet LAN adapters using the IEEE interface. These enhancements allow the migration from X.25 specific adapters and the existing user interfaces are retained. The enhancements replace the X.25 frame layer, which is equivalent to the data link layer in the seven-layer OSI model. To enable connection to IP networks, AIXlink/X.25 V2.1 adds support for: XOT (RFC 1613: X.25 over TCP). XOT replaces the X.25 frame layer with TCP/IP based sockets. Logical Link Control, Type 2 (LLC2), known as XOL within this product, replaces the X.25 frame layer with LLC2 over Ethernet (ISO 8881). LLC2 already exists in AIX and is implemented in the AIX kernel with DLPI primitives. XOL is supported on AIX network adapters that can be configured with an Ethernet (en#) network interface. XOT is supported on any AIX TCP/IP supported network adapter. In some configurations, X.25 to IP bridging hardware is required. AIXlink/X.25 continues the existing support of connection to public or private X.25 packet-switched data networks. The addition of support for XOT and XOL allows X.25 communication over existing IP networks or Ethernet LANs, respectively. 2 Description AIXlink/X.25 V2.1 is the functional equivalent of AIXlink/X.25 V2.0 and provides direct support for: Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) X.3, X.28, and X.29 Packet Assembler Disassembler (PAD) attachment of asynchronous terminals Network Provider Interface API to the packet layer Data Link Program Interface API to the frame Common Input/Output Emulation for application compatibility AIXlink/X.25 V2.1 supports up to: 512 virtual circuits per port 1024 virtual circuits per adapter 4096 virtual circuits per system The adapter limit per system is 16, except the ARTIC960Hx adapter limit is 14 and the ARTIC960 MCA limit remains eight. AIXlink/X.25 V2.1 supports 32-bit applications only. User applications need to be compiled for a 32-bit application environment. 32-bit applications are supported on a 64-bit kernel. AIXlink/X.25 V2.1 delivers support for the CCITT 1980, 1984, and 1988 X.25 recommendations. All functions and features in AIXlink/X.25 V2.0 are still available and supported in V2.1. AIXlink/X.25 V2.1 continues support for six existing adapters: 2-port Multiprotocol PCI Adapter (#2962): Supported in a 32-bit and 64-bit kernel environment. IBM ARTIC960Hx 4-port Selectable PCI Adapter (#2947): Supported in a 32-bit and 64-bit kernel environment. IBM CoProcessor/1 Adapter for ISA (#2961): Supported on AIX 5L V5.1 only; supported in a 32-bit kernel environment only. IBM ARTIC960 Microchannel Adapter (#2929, #2935, #2938): Supported on AIX 5L V5.1 only; supported in a 32-bit kernel environment only. ARTIC Portmaster Adapter/A for Microchannel (#7006, #7008): Supported on AIX 5L V5.1 only; supported in a 32-bit kernel environment only. IBM CoProcessor/2 Adapter for Microchannel (#2960): Supported on AIX 5L V5.1 only; supported in a 32-bit kernel environment only. Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act AIXlink/X.25 V2.1 is capable as of July 23, 2004, when used in accordance with IBM s associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. All publications are supplied on the CD-ROM. Publications can be viewed using the Documentation Library Service, which offers easier access to online documentation with a single integrated GUI. This user interface allows users to read, navigate, and search online HTML documentation. The Documentation Library Service also contains a Print Tool button. When you click this button, you see a list of books that can be downloaded in a single printable file for printing on your local printer. You have the option of customizing this list to include your own book for printing. This serves customers who want to view books online and read documents in hardcopy format. Information about how you may obtain program services will be provided by the party (either IBM or its authorized reseller) from whom you acquired the program. Security, auditability, and control AIXlink/X.25 V2.1 uses the security and auditability features of the AIX 5L operating system software. Customer responsibilities: The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities. Ordering information AIXlink/X.25 is a stand-alone product with one charge unit: per machine, including Software Maintenance. Separate convenience features for customers who wish to purchase AIXlink/X.25 in blocks of 250 are available. There are separate billing features for an upgrade to 24 x 7 support. The 24 x 7 support features will be added in addition to the Registration/After License feature for customers who choose this option. Customers who have Software Maintenance and wish to get an upgrade should place a System Program Order (SPO) for delivery of media and hardcopy entitled publications for AIXlink/X.25 V2.1 (5765-E85). Customers who have existing Software Maintenance contracts will be able to continue until their contract expires. Upon renewal, customers will automatically be moved to the new billing. Customization options: Select the appropriate feature number to customize your order with delivery option desired. This feature can be specified on the initial or MES orders. Expedite shipments Feature Description 3445 Local IBM Office Expedite (for IBM use only) Expedite shipments will be processed to receive 72-hour delivery from the time IBM Software Delivery and Fulfillment (SDF) receives the order. SDF will then ship the order via overnight air transportation. SPO (5692-A5L): A 5692-A5L SPO is mandatory for shipments of program distribution and publications. The individual licensed program orders (for example, 5765-E85) are for registration and billing purposes only. No shipment occurs under these orders. To receive shipment of machine-readable materials on a CD-ROM requires an SPO (5692-A5L). To prevent additional billing expenses, place only one SPO order per machine. Select the following SPO (5692-A5L) feature number for the licensed program to be delivered on a CD-ROM. Feature Program Program name number number AIXlink/X.25 V E85 Preinstall: The preinstall option is only valid if accompanied by a hardware system order for the preinstalled AIX 5L V5.1, V5.2, or V5.3 operating system specifying the preinstall option. It is recommended that backup media be chosen with preinstalled orders. Not all of the software offered under the licensed program will be preinstalled on the system disk. To take delivery of backup media, media feature 3410 must be specified. Software preinstalled on the hard disk does not include all of the function included on the media. The 5765-E85 order and SPO 5692-A5L must be for the same system type/system number and must have the same scheduled shipment date. Feature number 5005 must be specified under the SPO 5692-A5L to facilitate preinstall of the licensed program on the system disk. For Authorized Assemblers, feature number 7305 must be specified under the SPO 5692-A5L to facilitate preinstall of the licensed program on the system disk. The preinstall option is available at no additional charge. Basic machine-readable material: Select one of the following priced feature numbers for media type under 5692-A5L. The media process charge is a one-time, non-discountable charge per SPO order when media is selected. The warranty provided to the customer, for at least one year from acquisition, is access to databases (read Web sites) for program information and FAQs, including any known fixes to defects, which the customer can download or obtain otherwise and install at leisure. Program technical support: Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your

5 Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. Customers will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee. Money-back guarantee: If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program, return it within 30 days from the invoice date, to the party (either IBM or its reseller) from whom you acquired it, for a refund. This applies only to your first acquisition of the program. Copy and use on home/portable computer: No Volume orders (IVO): Yes, contact your IBM representative. Passport Advantage applies: No Software Maintenance applies: Yes. All distributed software licenses include Software Maintenance (Software Subscription and Technical Support) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected. While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions; and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center.
