3 1. Introduction Master Templates is a utility that allows the user to import and merge VE model data from a source master template into a target project. The master template can be exported from existing projects, allowing the user to re-use previously created data sets (profiles, templates, constructions etc.). Master templates are in essence the strategy of a design embodied in a model made simply transferrable to a new model i.e. all data & assignment, but no geometry. In some scenarios it is accepted that there will be limitations to master templates e.g. HVAC files room assignment, multiple complex MacroFlo or construction assignments may require some user intervention after import, however this does not detract from the main advantages of master templates notably: Early simple models; master templates will be directly applicable and re-applicable to rapidly create working models and what-if explorations; little user intervention is anticipated (or desired) at this simple scale. For master planning energy models the advantage increases dramatically as multiple buildings can be quickly & confidently populated with model data; Detailed models; master templates will be used to increase productivity / design cycle speed on detailed working models; user intervention is anticipated e.g. HVAC files - room assignment, multiple complex MacroFlo settings multiple window configurations in a room or multiple construction assignments in a room. 2. Accessing Master Template Options The master template options can be accessed via the ModelIT menu shown below. Master Templates 3

4 This menu item will open the model merge wizard This menu item will open the model merge restore dialog This menu item will open a dialog allowing the user to save the current model as a.tpl file 3. Master Template Wizard The Master Template Wizard option will open the dialog shown below: Browse for master template. The master template can be in the form of: *.tpl *.cab *.mit Show Master Template Room Names Clicking this button will display the room names of the source template file. For auto-assigning of room data we can choose to match by room name and therefore, this option allows us to determine whether the target model naming convention is appropriate for this. Import Data Choosing this option allows the user to quickly import data to the project. This import route does not allow the user to drill into specific data sets. For example, it will allow the user to import full sets of templates, profiles, constructions etc. but will not allow the user to specify individual items. In other words this route is intended for fast importing of entire datasets. Import and assign data Allows user to do everything that Import Data does with the additional option of auto-assigning data to matched rooms. Information Balloon All wizard pages contain an information balloon which is activated when the user hovers over. This provides information on that particular page. Import Data (Advanced) Allows user to do everything that Import Data does, however, in this route the user can drill into specific items. This provides a fine level of granularity, for example, we can choose to import a one or more daily profiles, one or more constructions etc in this route General The master template wizard contains information in table form. For such tables, the user can sort columns add filters etc. (In a similar manner to that of the current tabular edit items in the VE). Master Templates 4

Import data As noted above, this option enables the user to quickly import entire datasets to the target project Extra Import Options The dialog below allows the user to select the data sets to be imported. The options are split into two categories: Templates: this allows the user to import entire template datasets for each of the given template types. For example selecting Thermal Conditions templates shall import ALL thermal conditions templates from the source master template. Note: In addition to the templates, all referenced data shall be imported. For example, should a template refer to a profile, system etc. then these items shall be imported too. Master Templates 5

6 Data: this allows the user to import entire datasets. For example, selecting Apache Profiles shall import ALL apache profiles from the master template. As noted above, if the user has chosen to import a template that is dependent upon specific data items, then this data item will be imported regardless of the user selecting the data check box. For example, a template may refer to a profile but the user has not selected Apache Profiles. This profile will be imported regardless of the user selection here as it is fundamental to the operation of the template Job Summary Choosing Next from the import options page shall display a job summary, listing the items to be imported. Note: The first items on all jobs shall be Create restore point. Whenever we apply a master template job, we create a restore point prior to applying changes. At any point, the user may revert the application of a master template by choosing the Master Templates Restore menu item option. All restore points shall be displayed allowing the user to restore back to the previous model state Import and assign data This option performs identical tasks as that of Import data with the additional step of applying data directly to matched rooms in the model. 7 Assignment Options Matching precedence Allows the user to select the methods they wish to use to match rooms by. The Move Up and Move Down buttons also allow the user to determine the precedence to match by. In the example shown, we are attempting the firstly match by room name, followed by Volume and then Floor Area. These can swapped up or down as appropriate. By using the associated tick boxes, we can also omit one or more items from the attempted match. Show Master Template Room Names Allows the user to view the source model room names Apply to selected rooms only Allows room matching to be applied to the selected rooms. Rooms must be selected prior to opening master templates. If no rooms selected then this won t be available for selection. Master Templates 7

8 Matched Rooms Use the tick boxes to select the rooms to apply the changes to. Selecting the header row allows the user to toggle all selections on/off. Alternatively, we can select individual rooms. Room Grouping Schemes Use the target models room groups to partition the displayed rooms accordinlgy. Current Room Name This is a list of the rooms in current model i.e. target. Matched Room Name This shows the rooms in the source model (master template). For each room in the current model, we will attempt to match up the rooms based on previous matching selection. Matched rooms are shown side by side (as above). In case where no match can be found, we display No Match. Users can manually alter the auto-matched rooms by selcting from the matched room column and choosing the desired room. Room groups within the selected grouping scheme (see combo above) shall be displayed in tab form. The user can switch room groups using these tabs What data is assigned? When a room is matched, we apply data, derived from the source model, to that room. The following is auto-assigned: Thermal data The thermal template assigned to the source room is auto-imported (including associated data; profiles, gains etc.) and assigned to the current matched room. Construction/Fabric data For each construction type/category in the source room (external wall, floor etc.) we find the most dominant using the area coverage and import and assign this construction to all such categories within the target room. Note: this will assign a single construction to the room for all surface categories. MacroFlo Openings Master Templates 8

9 Similar to constructions, openings shall be auto assigned from the source room by identifying the most dominant opening using area coverage. Note: this will assign a single opening to the room. If the target model has multiple openings, then these will all be assigned this opening Extra Import Options This is identical to Extra Import Options above with the difference that items will be pre-selected should the user have chosen to match one or more rooms. As indicated, matching rooms shall assign data to the matched rooms and, thus, data must be imported to support this. The intermediate state check boxes indicate which items shall be imported automatically due to room matching. The user cannot deselect these items as they are pre-requisites of the auto-assign. The only way to remove these items would be to go back and deselect the matched rooms. The user can choose to import additional data using the check boxes provided Import Data (Advanced) The import options above are intended as a means to rapidly import full datasets to the target model. The advanced option allows importing data to a far higher level of granularity. For every import option noted above, we have an equivalent advanced item where we can select one or more items. 10 Templates All available templates within the selected type shall be displayed here. The use can choose one or more for import Import? Use this option to select the items to import Lists all the data types for each page of the advanced import. In the example above, templates, we list all template types. Toggle the header check box to select all templates. This does not select them for import, but allows quick selection to use the Import check box. The user can use the check box associated with each row to select on a room by room basis Constructions Lists all available construction categories User can select one or more constructions to import Master Templates 10

11 Other Data The user can import from the source models VE databases; profiles (abs and mod), constructions (opaque, glazed etc.), Apache systems etc. Lists all data items available for import User can select one or more items to import Selecting from the data type list shall update the displayed options on the right hand side. The image above shows that we have selected to import internal gains and thus, the data displayed is that of the master template internal gains list, where we can choose one or more items to import. 12 4. Master Template Restore The dialog will show a full list of restore points. Each restore point is named in accordance with the time that it was created. The user can select any one from the list. Restore Clicking Restore will restore to the selected restore point and the dialog will close Cancel Clicking Cancel will close the dialog and no changes will be made 5. Master Template Export Choosing the master template export option shall allow the user to export the current model as a master template (*.tpl). This can then be used for future reference to serve as a master template on future projects. 6. End of document Master Templates 12
