Name: WFU Lab Section: Tuesday, 9:30 Tuesday, 12:00 Tuesday, 1:30 Tuesday, 3:00 Thursday, 3:00 CSC 101: Lab #1 Introduction and Setup Due Date: 5:00pm, day after your lab session Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to make sure that your computer is setup correctly for future labs and to familiarize you with the different locations where files you will use in this class will be stored (both on your laptop and on the network). There are 12 questions to answer for this lab interspersed throughout this document. They will be worth 7.5 points each. The instructors being able to view your website online is worth another 10 points, for a total of 100 points. Step 1: Update your password if it has expired, as your password controls access to not just your laptop, but also to all other Wake Forest computer resources we will be using. You should use a wired (cable-based) Ethernet connection to the campus network to do this. Be prepared for it to take 10 or more minutes for the new password to spread around the university network. Step 2: ** If you know you already have a WFU webpage because of a different class (such as a First Year Seminar or an Education course), you can skip this step and move on to Step 3. ** Create your homepage on the Wake Forest University webserver computer by visiting the following web address: After logging in, you will see a menu of options dealing with the Wake Forest network ( setup, homepage setup, etc). About halfway down that page, you should see a set of options similar to the ones below. After selecting the appropriate option, Create a Wake Forest Home Page, you can use the Continue button to actually create your home page. The computer that this process is making changes on (the Wake Forest webserver) is where you will store files at the end of lab to be graded, as the files on this webserver can be seen on the Internet (allowing the instructors to check them). Step 3: Create a new directory (folder) on your laptop for this class, called CSC101Lab. These names are sensitive with regards to capitalization, so make sure you match the capitalization used above. Also, don t use any spaces in the name, as that can confuse some programs we will be working with. This directory is where you will store files while working in the lab, and any files in this directory are only visible to you.
We suggest that you put such a folder under My Documents or Documents or on the Desktop somewhere that is easy to remember as we will use it every week. See the image below for an example. Now, within the folder called CSC101Lab, make another folder called lab1, so that you see the following: Problem 1: First, what is the name of the directory (folder) you placed your CSC101Lab directory inside of (i.e. this is often called the parent directory of your CSC101Lab directory)? What is the name of that directory s parent (the grandparent directory of your CSC101Lab directory)? Answer this question using your computer, but feel free to look at the example on the next page which highlights where parent and grandparent directory information is typically found. CSC101Lab s parent directory: CSC101Lab s grandparent directory:
Grandparent Image that goes along with Problem 1: Parent Step 4: Using the WS_FTP file transfer application on your computer (the instructors will help you find it - looking under WFU Internet Tools on the Start menu should get us close), choose to connect to the computer called wfu.edu and use your WFU password to connect. If your password has expired, you will notice it here. Once connected, on the left-hand side, navigate through your folders until you are in the parent folder of your CSC101Lab folder. Drag and drop your newly created CSC101Lab folder from your computer into the folder called www-home on the wfu.edu computer. A picture of this process is below. The left hand side of the picture shows the folders on your computer and the right hand side shows the folders on the Wake Forest web-server computer. You want to drag the CSC101Lab folder on the left into the www-home folder on the right by dragging the CSC101Lab folder on-top of the www-home folder. Problem 2: What is the full name of the FTP software you used to connect to wfu.edu? Step 3.5: Go back to the following address: and select the 2 nd option under Wake Forest Web Pages, Set permissions for personal home page. Selecting that option will take you to a page which resembles the image on the next page: What is the full name of the directory (folder) assigned to you on the computer named wfu.edu? The name you are looking for should be the name that first appears on the right-hand side of the FTP application (in the box next to the Up, Folders, Cancel, and Transfer Mode icons) when you connect to wfu.edu. Which computer shown in the image above (left hand side or right hand side) is the computer that the TAs and instructor will check your assignments on when they are grading them after submission? a. Left Hand Side b. Right Hand Side
Problem 2 (continued): Your computer and the Wake Forest web-server use different symbols/punctuation to separate the names in a long list of folders (this is called the separator symbol ). This symbol sits between the current directory s name and that directory s parent s name, as well as between the parent s name and the grandparent directory s name, etc. By viewing the directory names shown in the FTP application, a. which separator symbol is used by Windows? b. which separator symbol is used by the wfu.edu computer? Step 5: Go back to the following address: and select the 2 nd option under Wake Forest Web Pages, Set permissions for personal home page. Selecting that option will take you to a page which resembles the image below: Make sure the box says Yes and click the Submit button. This will allow everyone to see your files on the web-server so that they can be graded. Step 6: Now that you have a copy of the files on the Wake Forest web-server that you originally had on your computer, you can test that you can see them through the World Wide Web. The web address for your files is: (the ~ is a tilde, located above the tab key; change the word username above to your actual username). Problem 3: Question 1: From the instructions above, what is the URL (address) you used to access your homepage on the Wake Forest webserver? After going to that address and making sure it shows up, add CSC101Lab/ onto the end of your web address and navigate to that page. If everything worked out OK, you should see a screen that is very similar to the one to the right. If yours doesn t match, let the instructors know.
Problem 3: Question 2: What is the URL (address) you used to access your CSC101Lab folder on the Wake Forest webserver? Question 3: Verify that the lab1 folder exists inside of your CSC101Lab folder on the Wake Forest webserver. Does it exist, and how did you verify its existence? Question 4: Try accessing the folder specified in question 2 of this problem, but spell the folder you are accessing with all capital letters as CSC101LAB. Does this work? Step 7: Sakai will be the content management system used to upload some future labs and to receive grade feedback for the labs. Open the following website: You should already be enrolled in this lab within the Sakai system. Click on the tab at the top of the Sakai webpage that represents the CSC 101 Lab. Problem 4: To verify you have successfully been able to login to Sakai for this class, what is the Code Word listed in the Site Information section of the Sakai website for the CSC 101 lab? If you get here during lab, have the instructor or TA verify that you have completed this lab. You are done! Turn in this paper document by the appropriate due date.
